### Discover the Majestic Şile Lighthouse in Şile Nestled on the western Black Sea coast in the charming town of Şile, the Şile Lighthouse stands as a testament to history and architectural brilliance. This historical lighthouse, commissioned by the Ottoman sultan Abdülmecid I in 1859, continues to guide ships safely along the coastline. Let's delve into the captivating world of the Şile Lighthouse and explore its fascinating features and significance. ### A Historical Marvel The Şile Lighthouse is perched on a cliffy point at Cape Şile, just 1 km northeast of the town. Its striking 19-meter tower, shaped like an octagonal prism, boasts a gallery around the lantern room. The lighthouse's masonry one-story keeper's house is attached to the tower, adding to its unique charm. ### Architectural Splendor As you approach the Şile Lighthouse, you'll be captivated by its pristine white facade adorned with narrow black horizontal bands. The tower's design showcases the craftsmanship of French engineers who constructed it. The lighthouse's lantern features eight 925mm catadioptric cylindrical lenses, which, when illuminated by a 1,000 W light source, create a mesmerizing beacon of light. ### Guiding Ships to Safety Initially lit by kerosene, the Şile Lighthouse later transitioned to a Dalén light using carbide (acetylene gas). Since 1968, it has been powered by electricity. Standing at a focal height of 60 meters, the lighthouse flashes a brilliant white light for 1.5 seconds every 15 seconds. This distinctive flashing pattern, visible up to a range of 20 nautical miles, ensures the safe navigation of ships along the Black Sea coast. ### Historical Significance The Şile Lighthouse has played a vital role in maritime history for over a century. Its construction marked a significant milestone in the region's development, providing a guiding light for sailors and protecting them from treacherous coastal waters. Today, it stands as a symbol of Turkey's rich maritime heritage and serves as a reminder of the country's commitment to maritime safety. ### Exploring Şile and Beyond While visiting the Şile Lighthouse, take the opportunity to explore the picturesque town of Şile itself.
