Let me start by saying that being a relief teacher is tough. Everyday presents new opportunities, but more often than not, it also presents new challenges. At a moments notice, you could be thrust in front of a class you've never met, or you could get lost looking for a building you've never seen. Whether you're a new graduate, or a seasoned veteran, relief teaching can be darn hard! HOWEVER, the purpose of this post is not to vent about the difficulties of relief teaching, but rather acknowledge these hardships and even better, celebrate some of the amazing resources available to us, the modern-day super teachers! So today, i'd like to share my top 3 fuss and preparation free teaching resources! As a relief teacher, one thing you need to have is reliable and engaging activities. To me, 'Just Dance' is just that! Just Dance is a video game series where players dance along copying the moves of onscreen dancers. How can you bring this into ANY classroom without a gaming console? Easy! Simply type 'just dance' into youtube and you'll be met with a whole range of songs for the kids to dance to. Just a tip, make sure you check the songs before hand. Some lyrics and dance moves are more kid-friendly than others! Looking to grab a quiet moment after lunch or provide students with an opportunity to engage with gorgeous literature? Look no further than Storyline Online. Run by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation, Storyline Online provides a beautiful collection of stories read by famous actors. The videos are simplistically animated, and come to life with well known and loved voices. One of my favourites is 'Harry the Dirty Dog' read by Betty White. Literacy resources don't get much better than this. Pobble365 is an incredible website that publishes a new photo each day. Each photo comes with a range of comprehension questions and writing activities so all of the work is done for you - perfection! So there you have it, my top 3 preparation-free resources! Don't forget, my TpT store also has a HUGE range of relief teaching resources and freebies! And, if you're looking for an all inclusive pack, with over 100 pages of my best selling resources as well as a teachers diary and subpack templates, look no further than my HUGE sub pack bundle! All the best and happy teaching!

This blog shares a whole host of resources to help TAs, HLTAs and LSAs get organised and feel prepared for their ever-changing roles in school.
It inevitably happens to every music teacher at some point in their teaching career: you have to call out absent. Whether it’s to attend a conference,
I'm still oohing and ahhing over my new blog *sigh* So with a new blog design, her is my big new idea. Well new idea for my blog lol. I'm so excited about my new idea! It's going to be a once a month series, on the first Sunday of each month! The main idea? Substitute preparedness! I will have a new topic each month on how you can be prepared for a sub! And my goal is to have a freebie with each post *fingers crossed* I even made a snazzy blog button for it! Frame: Tracee Orman Top font : A Cupcake For The Teacher Today's topic is about being prepared for any emergency absence. A few of the best things that I've seen as a sub, were super prepared teachers that had emergency lessons and stuff for up to five days, just in case. And in one situation, the teacher who thought she was going to be gone just for one or two days, was gone the whole week, but I had her emergency week stuff. I know it's hard to plan using general lessons, but it can be done! Or choose to have your emergency lessons have a them like an author, artist, or topic. If you can, leaving the outline of your next week's lessons would be a bonus, that way your sub could get the idea of what you are teaching for math, spelling, etc. In the the few instances where I didn't have any lesson plans, there generally was the week's plan and I could at least keep the schedule going and the math unit on target. One teacher had 2-3 worksheets already copied for each subject. She is prepared! Some tips for subject material to leave : Reading: If you Daily 5, then this shouldn't really be a problem for you sub. Or have activities that can be done for any book for guided reading or table work. I just created a pack exactly for that! Math: If you have math centers, then this isn't a problem. Have students work out of their textbook. Some fun ideas (especially if it is a Friday) have them play math games or games on the computer. My friend Denise at Sunny Days has free Bump math games and other games. Spelling: Have a spelling bee. Or rainbow words. Science: Now this can be a bit of a toughie. I know that the classes I sub for know me enough that they let me teach science lessons and do experiments. Maybe you don't want your sub to do that or put them through that stress lol. In these cases, I've seen teachers have their subs do art/science. Draw a tree/flower and label it. Then students write about it. I did find this cute freebie on TpT about classifying! Social Studies: In this case, this might be one of those things you want prepped ahead. I found a free Scoot game for 2-4th grade. You can always add a read aloud, crafts, choice time, etc. And at the end of the school year and you didn't use your emergency stuff, you will have them for the next school year! And now for the freebie! I've combined a few pages into this pack, it's a little bit of this and that to get your sub tub going! For reading I've included a page from my Reading Activities For Any Book pack! For math, it's an answer sheet for any math problem. For social studies, it's an all about me page. Just click the cover pic below for your freebie!

I have seen so many great ideas for review games out there. I thought I would compile a list of my favorites to have as a resource. I figure if I could come up with 6 great games that work, I only have to use the same game 4 times in a year! 1. Zap! - This is my favorite game so far simply because the smartest group doesn't always win. It's kind of like Jeopardy, but with a curve ball - if you get the "Zapped" card, you lose all your points! Thanks for sharing, Mathtastrophe! Game instructions and printable here. Another take on this game is Bazinga by Simplifying Radicals. 2. Nerf Gun - Love this idea! Draw a bullseye on the board. Divide the kids into teams. Ask a team a review question. If they get the answer correct, they get to shoot at the board to see how many points they earn. So fun! 3. Jenga - I really like how Living Out His Love blog does this one. She writes with a sharpie marker directly onto the Jenga piece. And, she write a subject and week on both sides of each piece. Though, if done this way, it seems like you could only do this at the end of the semester (because if you have Sciene, week 7 written in sharpie and you're only at week 3, that wouldn't work!). Another idea is to tape the subject and week with clear packing tape and then re-do it as your progress along in the year. 4. Power Tower - Similar to Jenga, but with paper cups. Write the question on the cup. If the class answers correctly, they get to stack the cups. If the tower falls, they have to start over. via Mrs. Lewis' Learning Library 5. Mr Potato Head - For every question the class gets correct, they get to add a body part to Mr. Potato. I also like the idea on 2nd Grade Rocks! blog. She uses it as a behavior incentive. Every time the class has good behavior, they get to add a body part. When Mr. Potato is completely put together, they get to have an ice cream party! 6. Snowball Fight - Love this idea for Texas as this may be the only snow the children ever see. Write the review questions on a piece of paper. Divide the kids into 2 teams. If the kids get it correct, they get to crumble it up into a ball. After all the questions have been answered, they get to have a snowball fight using the paper balls! 7. Chair Tic-Tac-Toe - Put nine chairs in 3 rows of 3 to make a square. Divide the class into 2 teams. Ask a team a question. If they get it correctly, one of their players gets to sit in one of the chairs. The first team to have 3 players sitting in a row wins. 8. Memory Mogul - Awesome (and free!) printable game from Sola Gratia Mom blog. This one seems like it could take some time printing out the cards and possibly creating a game board. But, the game board and cards could last all year. Click here for instructions and printables. 9. Stinky Feet - My 7 year old son would love this one. Very simple with little prep time. Idea and instructions can be found here at Teaching in the Fast Lane blog. 10. Classroom Board Game - This game may require a little adapting, but it looks like fun. Turn the classroom into a life size game board. Great ideas for how to do this game here at Blessings for Bible School Teachers.
