My goal is 27 blocks a month- here is 54! Was able to work on this at my Sisters retreat. I made one extra for 55 total so I could piece this section together. I need to make 10 each month for the basketweave top. That was assembled at the quilt weekend too! Looking forward to seeing yours! Wednesday we will be sharing our Spencer Quilt blocks. Here we go! I can't wait to see all the creative unique quilt blocks!! Here are most of this months blocks. In order for my quilt top to be completed in October I need to make 27 blocks a month. My plan is to tear off the paper and sew them together in groups of 25. DONE! My friend Linda gave me many of these 6" string blocks. I need 10 a month and will set them each month. Here's my layout. Lori at Humble Quilts has just posted her final linky party for her Stringalong Challenge here. Over the past few months I began a spiderweb quilt in blues and white, which is still not finished. The top is progressing slowly and there are still over half the blocks to be completed. Here's an older progress photo to give you an idea what the eventual quilt will look like. "Sing the Blues MamaLou" in progress a bit closer Over the summer this project got derailed when I decided to work with a little box of colorful batiks and Fossil Fern squares that were cut into strips for these two tops, now awaiting quilting. "Joseph's Coat" "Joseph's Coat II" I'm hoping to get back to "Sing the Blues" after the planned holiday quilting is finished. Another fresh dump of snow provided the backdrop for a photo shoot with this quilt. I backed it with a soft vintage sheet that I had in my stash. Here's a picture of the back. You can see the quilting on it better in this photo. I used my Circle Lord giant template board called 7 Treasures of Buddha. This is the first time I have used this template. I already really like it. It was fast and easy to put into the muscle memory of my brain. The circles are 6" across. Here's a pic with footprints in the snow... I love STRIPED binding! I just happened to have a little piece enough to do this quilt. It measures 52" x 53". After the end of the quarter I'll be linking up to the Q1 FAL. Update 4/3/19: I'm linking up to the FAL here. I saw a string quilt some time ago and started on a few blocks and then set them aside. I needed an easy project on Sunday, so I could keep one ear on the playoff games. I save string pieces and Linda O gave me a bag of them. I thought I better get busy using them up! And if you don't know what strings are they are long pieces of fabric in various widths and lengths. I use telephone book paper as a foundation so the blocks don't get too stretched out. You can use muslin or ugly fabric too. My blocks will finish at 4" so I cut the papers 4.5" My blocks will be sewn on the diagonal and I want a red fabric in the center of each one. I start by placing it right side up in the center. On one side of the red strip I want to sew all light strings. I start by putting my first one on the red, right sides together. Then sew. Press. Then keep adding strings, placing them right sides together on the last sewn strip. Do that until the paper is covered, working out from the center. Trim to 4 1/2" Admire your blocks. This, like a log cabin, has many settings. I'm doing mine in a zig zag, like the one below. The one on quiltindex uses 8" blocks. String or Streak of Lightening. (Maker not recorded). 1901-1929. Here we are on month 6 of our stringalong! Just got these sewn this past weekend! Just under the wire! Because June was a busy month I fell behind on these little ones. I have these 5 and 1 under the needle. That means I'll need to make about 50 this month! Yikes!! If I shoot for 2 a day I can get caught up!! Looking forward to seeing how you are coming along! My friend gave me a pile of her blocks while cleaning out her sewing room last year. Thank you Linda!! I will not be adding any borders to this one. It is 61x70" and was difficult to get a photo of the completed top. The best photo includes Elsa's head and her ball! LOL Does anybody else notice the darker blocks in the upper left of this photograph? I must work with darker strings than my friend Linda. Not quilty related: Last weekend there was an airshow in our town. I think this area makes for great photographs! The weather was wonderful!! If you love airshows here's the link- AIR SHOW OF THE CASCADES Our mid week getaway was to Broken Top in the Three Sisters Wilderness. It was a bit of a redemption hike. Last year we started a loop and couldn't finish- you can do a quick read HERE. We felt like we needed to close that loop. Next year this entire area is going to a permit system so it won't be as easy to jump in a car and head to a trailhead. It was definitely a desert hike. The Three Sisters Mountains- Faith, Hope and Charity. Broken Top, where we were heading. Elsa had her pack and booties so we let her cool her belly off in the snow. No Name Lake- elevation 8000' Good night sun... We had amazing views!! We had the entire valley to ourselves. Yeah, love this view with my morning coffee. Now let's link up! Why have I not been blogging? I have had my nose to the grindstone finishing a quilt and a mini hamper for my delightful friend.....in the Bee a Brit Stingy Secret Santa swap! First off the quilt! I started and finished the string pieced centre section of this quilt in July/August 2011. I had joined in with the marvellously productive Julie at juliekquilts on her string along! Since then it has hung around waiting for a border and backing. Then I decided to ditch the idea of a complicated border after all there is quite a lot going on already! Once the border was done I decided this quilt would leapfrog to the top of my list with a simply pieced backing! I fell in love with this star - inspired by Katy-I'm a ginger monkey - Jones! and this gorgeous quilt that gave me the impetus I needed to get this quilt finished! Yeah you have to love that! So how to quilt it!? As there are lots of little bits on the string side and for quickness I favoured machine quilting. I briefly toyed with the idea of concentric circles but tossed that aside in favour of straight lines! I know who would have thought it! I love to do FMQ but wanted something simpler for this quilt. Straight lines then but I didn't want to shove the whole quilt through that 9" gap of my sewing machine throat - so each quarter is quilted in an L shape. With all the L's joining back to back in the middle - hope that is clear?? Next question - what colour of thread ? I got a few likely colours out and thought they looked so good together I'd use them all - in fact I used some others too thanks to my marvellous win from the lovely Lynne and Aurifil! So I did some plaid quilting on my plaid quilt. Lots of colour, close lines of quilting, then gaps - seriously fun to do except for the winding of bobbins! And my trademark quilted label - Plaid Away! Was I thinking football or something else when I named it? And now here's what I sent to my partner in the Bee a Brit Stingy secret Santa swap - it has been safely delivered by sled and she seems to like it! Woohoo! Or rather Hohoho! Any ideas who it is for?? I'll let Mr Giraffe reveal all.... Get better Jan ! Big hugs and hearty best wishes from the South!

Wow! The scraps and strings are flying because you be stringing it! This is from the #modastringalong on Instagram.
