In 1982, sisters Ruth Finley and Margaret Finley Shackelford made wills bequeathing 2,500 acres and two antebellum houses in Marshall County, Mississippi, to the National Audubon Society. Early in 1998, the surviving sister Margaret Shackelford invited the society to open its state headquarters at the family home in Holly Springs and to begin working at Strawberry Plains, the plantation where she lived four miles north of town. At her death late that year, the society took full possession of the sisters' bequest, and Strawberry Plains Audubon Center was established. Strawberry Plains Audubon Center: Four Centuries of a Mississippi Landscape documents the unique and complex history of the land encompassed by the center. With a large cast of characters from many generations, this book richly delineates life on a tract of land in north Mississippi. It tells a fascinating story involving famous historical figures like Hernando de Soto and William Tecumseh Sherman, but concentrates on those who owned and worked this land and their changing fortunes. Through their individual stories, the author conveys the larger sweep of history in the South and tells an uplifting saga of stewards of the land, conservators whose vision led to the creation of a lasting legacy for people and wildlife.Hubert H. McAlexander is Josiah Meigs Professor of English at the University of Georgia. Our deerskin dresses are influenced by styles worn by women of Native American tribes of the Old West. When making dresses, they would add beautiful touches of beadwork, painting and fringe. This particular design features large decorative glass beads and pipe bones across the bust. (NOTE: Tack belts sold separately.) While most often ordered for weddings, these buckskin dresses are also beautifully suited for Pow-Wow events, historic reenactors, museums, SASS, theater performances, or simply for display as art in your home. These dresses are made in the typical “three-skin” style, with one deerskin making the front, another for the back, and the third forming the yoke and “sleeves” of the garment. Every deerskin is unique and different, and will display natural imperfections such as scrapes, bug bites, small holes, etc. These are not considered to be flaws, but instead add to the authentic and historic look of the garment. We make our dresses from the finest deerskin for strength, beauty and softness. All fringe is hand cut, and we only use glass beads, no plastic! Dresses can be worn belted or loose, and are typical of the design worn by Plains Indian tribes. Tack belts sold separately. No zippers, buttons, or snaps were used on this style of dress in the Old West, and so in like fashion, ours are designed to slide over the head and be pulled down into position. COLOR: Our deerskin dresses are all handmade with the suede (rough) side out, and are available in White, Cream (Natural), Palomino, and Dusk. This dress is also now available in German braintan. The photos show the dresses made in Cream (Natural), and German braintan. NOTE: Colors and shading of individual deerskins, beads, pipe bones, and paint will vary depending on availability and dye lots. Size of beads may vary. Be AWARE the leather for this dress will contain natural markings. NATURAL MARKINGS: Each deerskin has its own unique shading and imperfections in the hide, including natural “range” marks such as scarring and insect bites, which only add to the natural beauty and authentic look of the finished Native American-style garment. This unique aspect, combined with the fact each garment is made individually, ensures no two pieces are ever alike. CARE: Mike suggests you allow your deerskin dress to develop its own natural “patina” with time. Obvious marks, dirt, or fingerprints can often be removed with the gentle scraping of a butter knife. STORAGE: Do not store the dress in plastic. Hang from a padded hanger, or fold gently and store on a shelf, in a clean pillowcase if desired. Another option is to display the dress as art when not being worn, on a mannequin or hanging flat against a wall from a horizontal rod through the sleeves. MEASUREMENTS: Please provide the following measurements when ordering: Bust Hips Height Finished desired approximate length of back of dress, from prominent bone at back of neck to bottom of fringe (so we know how long to make the dress from top to bottom) Please allow extra time for white deerskin dresses. Rush orders and special requests can be considered; please contact us with any questions.
