'Simone Weil' is a 16" x 20" (40.64 x 50.8 cm) high-resolution portrait of (guess who?) Simone Weil, printed on Somerset Velvet paper, a fine-toothed, 100% cotton matte art paper. This is a human/machine collaboration. Simone Weil (1909 – 1943) was a French philosopher, mystic, and political activist. Her life exemplifies the difficulty of trying to find ones way in life. I love her strange and wonderful brand of Jewish/Catholic mystic Existential spirituality. She was at times Marxist, at times an anarchist, sometimes Jewish (as she had been born) and finally a Christian mystic. She was always brilliant and sometimes lost. She died at the age of 34 by self-starvation. Her (1947/1952) book 'Gravity And Grace' is at once touching, inspiring, and despairing: "I am also other than what I imagine myself to be. To know this is forgiveness." "We must give up everything that is not grace and not even desire grace." [This is printed beneath the portrait, although I admit that I added a comma because I thought it read better with one.] "May God grant that I become nothing. In so far as I become nothing, God loves Himself through me." Some consider her a saint. Some consider her insane. I tend towards saint.
