Family rules... We try our best to stick by SOME rules in this house. I have to admit that I have never been that type of parent who knew, before having kids, what I expected or wanted out of my children. I would guess I threw myself into motherhood with only a few guidelines in my head - Love, Care, Nurture, Protect and Teach. And - yes - keep my child somewhat clean but still letting him/her get dirty at play. I am the sort of parent who is "wingin' it" most of the time with temporary efforts on making Chores Charts, Star Charts, Responsibility Lists, Rules Lists... All handwritten lists that I have put up on the fridge through the years. Lists that no one would read or notice more than me. Lists that would be forgotten in less then a day or two as we have a tendency to quickly fall back into bad habits and the chaos that a family of 5 brings on a daily basis. I know. It is my own fault. I just don't have the energy it takes to follow through. There you have it. I'm far from perfect. So when I saw this sign before Christmas it spoke to me in a second. It was that type of "Saw it - Loved it - Bought it" moments. It was my gift to our family, and maybe I love it more than anyone else but at least this Family Rules list is cool, fun and pretty. I thought that maybe this sign will help me to relax a little bit more in my mothering and stop being so incredibly serious at all times (You know the: "Have you done your homework for today?", Did you shower yet?, Have you cleaned your room this week? Pick up your socks please? Please move your school bag, shoes and jacket from the floor?, No more snacks, we are having dinner in an hour. etc...). I so wish I could lighten up a bit. Laugh Out Loud more, Know I Am Loved, Be More Happy and Try New Things instead of being so strict to routines. Our family has always had unspoken rules and more or less we have followed them. But there are times when it feels kind of nice to be able to point at this sign and say: "Listen. Instead of making fun of your brother/sister maybe you should help him/her. You see here? It is a part of the family rules - Help Each Other. I help you. Maybe you can help someone too." Sounds good, right? In real life this doesn't happen very often, but I certainly don't regret this purchase. I love the Family Rules sign, I am aiming to use it like I have quoted it above and I am hoping it will subconsciously be printed into my kids brains. Call it brain washing with a good purpose. And maybe they will remember this sign and all the rules one day when they are preparing themselves to have their own children... That would be a great accomplishment. That would make me feel good. A mother can always try... Kärlek Annette
Like most of you, I enjoy perusing all the home decor blogs. I see so many fabulous ideas and actually get excited over some of the ideas I see. Check out some of these inspiring ones: I LOVE the look of carrera marble in kitchens like these: But in a kitchen that actually gets used and has children, is it really practical? Probably not. So what to do? Well, welcome the wonderful world of imposters! Both Caesarstone and Corian have awesome look-alikes. They'll still cost as much as marble, but the practical benefits would be worth it! Even if you just did your island in it, it'd be stunning. Here's Caesarstone's "Misty Carrera": And here's Corian's "Rain Cloud": Not bad, huh? I'd still like to feel them in person. I worry I may not like the feel of the corian...hmmm. How awesome is this memo board above the desk area? I love the nailhead trim. Perfect. Courteny Hill Interiors I just love seeing creative ideas like this. A mirror is hung to separate the room. It allows the bed to float in the center of the room and create a backdrop for a little sitting area. Love it! I've seen alot of islands dressed up with beadboard, but I like how different these few were done. They feel more custom and unexpected, yet you'd be able to do these yourself: I love the horizontal planks, along with the "x" details Thrifty Decor Chick If you do beadboard, I like it framed out in nice wide planks. It just looks more finished to me. I also love the wide, horizontal planked look of this island. Painted ceilings- LOVE them. It's truly the fifth wall. Look at how these painted ceilings really make these rooms: Just kidding. I just thought this was funny! I've seen a lot of cute DIY play kitchen from repurposed furniture. This one is just darling and unique. I love the European Street Market flair of it: via apartment therapy The next picture is of how to do a "Neutral" room right. Look at the pops of color and the rug detail. via House of Turquoise Tell me what is NOT to love about this kitchen? ...the antique base cabinets, the black china shelving, that range hood...ahhh! I want these corbels... I love this shower curtain and am thinking of making it for my boys' bathroom: Inspired yet?
True story: we photographed David's collection in a barn. On set, David's eye caught some recently cut stumps on the property. He grabbed them on the fly, spray-painted them gold, and added them to the set. We liked them so much, we sent the stumps off to our factory, had them turned into molds and reproduced them in crushed stone/polyresin. With exacting details right down to the bark and the rings in the wood, our Gold Tree Stumps make a singular sidetable or stool with a great backstory. Good eye David! Select from three of David's stumps. Clever tree stump side tables in gold Use as a stool or side table Exacting details of bark taken from actual stumps Made from a crushed stone and polyester resin mix Spot clean Imported A Grandin Road exclusive.
Come check out my latest round-up of Monday Must Haves! Pillows, dresses, tablecloths and an awesome small shop!
it's hard to believe that just two weeks has passed since i caved and went running to my yarn stash. i think that's what happens when you spend most days in your pyjamas, time passes in a different way. today however i am dressed and trying to find my way out from under the 'cloud of sadness' that has engulfed me since my folks left. last night i stayed up late finishing my latest collaboration with Mr Hook, i'm so proud of my achievements with him. i know perhaps one shouldn't blow one's own trumpet but i can't help it. to have made such items... items that i never would have dreamed possible a few years back due to a crocheting inability, makes me stand here before you and 'boast a little'. so please forgive my boasting ways, just for today... the granny circle squares i showed you on monday have now become a little cushion. a friend for my other cushion over christmas i took Yvonne's pattern for the granny circle squares and tweaked it, making a garland for the lounge... a new year needs a new garland i feel and then there is the matter of a stool, a very faithful stool that has been good to me over the years despite being flat packed on arrival. well this little stool began to make noises to me as i passed by, little sobs of despair. on closer inspection it became apparent that my little stool was feeling most left out in the cold. for my little stool had noted Ingrid's wood & wool stools beside her, clothed in their glorious crocheted coats. i said to my little stool, "little stool do not worry, for i have mastered skills of crocheting way beyond my wildest dreams and i know i can help you" with that thought and a bottle of cider, i proceeded to crochet a circle. in my reckless abandonment, being two sheets to the wind and remembering my 'risk taking ways' for 2010, i continued going round and around. when at last i felt my circle was as good as it was going to get i stopped. did despair descend upon me when i noted it's flaring wavy corners, dearest readers? why no it did not, did i hang my head and weep into my dressing gown, dearest readers? why no i did not, i just reached for a length of yarn, weaved it through the edge of my dubious circle and gathered it up. in short i produced a crocheted shower cap for my little stool. my little stool tells me it is far happier and glorious whilst my little brain is telling me i need to crochet with cider in hand more often and there she feels, ends her days of moping, tomorrow the sun will come out ~ Tif
