French knots, chain stitches, and straight lines become peaceful countrysides and abandoned shacks overrun by moss and vines in Katrin Vates’s embroideries. Using bleached canvas as a base, Vates works with thread in natural color palettes of greens or autumnal hues that she lays in variable lengths and thicknesses: she conveys a glistening ocean through flat, even stitches in blues and white, while tufts of neutral tones become cropped fields and dried bushes. This issue’s Evolve theme is timely as we continue to navigate our way through an uncertain global landscape, particularly here at est HQ where we’re still in strict lockdown. Yet there’s nothing like the unexpected to inspire, to satiate the craving for something new. We’ve found ourselves inspired and buoyed by colour in our featured homes by Flack Studio ‘Return to the Emerald City’ and Kennedy Nolan Architects ‘A Singular Attraction’. We’ve also evolved in the way we respond to our landscape through design, looking at Madeleine Blanchfield in her Tree House ‘Where Architects Live’ and ‘Rethink: A New Perspective’ looking at the renewed potential of an existing home. We discover ‘Resilient Architecture’ with Stephen Crafti, as he opens our eyes to the evolution of adaptive architecture in response to climate change and environment. As always, there’s est Style, Library and the Playlist which, in this issue, respond to the same theme of how music has influenced what we wear, read and listen to.

Time can be a difficult variable to visually convey in still photography, both the length of time an exposure takes or a series of photos meant to depict the passage of time can be somewhat ambiguous without a written explanation. In his latest series, Time is a dimension, Singapore-based photographer Fong Qi Wei (previously) explores just that idea by shooting landscapes from a stationary position over a 2-4 hour period and then digitally slicing the images to create a layered collage.
