Kleine boom De Stewartia rostrata, oftewel de schijncamelia is een zeldzame kleine boom, met een aantal bijzondere en opvallende eigenschappen. Bladkleur Het blad van de Stewartia rostrata loopt rood uit en verkleurt gedurende de zomer naar groen. Om vervolgens in het najaar naar dieprode tinten te verkleuren, alvorens het blad van de boom afvalt. Bloeiwijze De grote, witte bloemen met een opvallende hoeveelheid meeldraden, verschijnen in de maanden juni-juli aan de boom. Vruchten Vervolgens laten zich na de bloei de typische vrucht van de Stewartia rostrata zien. De vrucht van de Stewartia rostrata zijn in het begin rood van kleur en worden vervolgens bruin van kleur als ze verhouten. Doosvrucht De typische doosvrucht van de Schijncamelia is rond en langwerpig van vorm, met lange punten op het uiteinde van de vruchtdoos. Naarmate de vruchten rijpen, springen de zaaddozen open en ziet men 5 compartimenten die elk zaden bevatten, welke graag worden gegeten door vogels. Hoe plant je de boom? Bepaal de definitieve standplaats van de boom en zorg dat deze vrij is van kabels, afval, oude beplanting en andere dingen die de groei van de boom kunnen belemmeren. Graaf een plantgat dat 2 maal de breedte van de wortelkuit heeft. Spit de bodem van het plantgat goed door en vermeng de vrijgekomen grond met (biologische) tuinaarde of aanplantgrond. Maak het plantgat op hoogte waarin de wortelkuit past en druk de grond stevig aan. Vul het plantgat met water en wacht tot dit gezakt is. Controleer of de wortelkuit voldoende vochtig is. Plaats de boom of plant in het plantgat. Het is enorm belangrijk dat de boom niet te diep staat, dan kan deze namelijk gaan rotten op de wortels. Plaats een boompaal of bamboestok stevig in de grond aan de kant van de boom waarvan de meeste wind komt. Plaats nu de gietrand of maak een walletje van grond rondom de boom zodat het water bij de boom de grond in kan zakken.
