I have a soft spot in my heart for the wild ferns in Oregon. Did you know that The Pacific Northwest is home to about 40 different species of ferns and it seems everywhere you turn you are able to find these gorgeous green beauties. Every spring and summer our yard pops with ferns and I can't resist using them in my creative projects. Today I thought it would be fun to show you how I stencil and stamp with ferns in a variety of different ways. Swipe left to see a bunch of examples! I have to first say that creating with nature is about discovery and engaging with your materials! Forget about perfection and things looking refined- instead challenge yourself to let go expectations and HAVE FUN! I love to stamp with ferns. I will load them up with paint just like you would with a stamp. Then I press it onto my surface to get an imprint. I like to layer these imprints all over my surface to create a messy and organic surface design. I also love to use ferns as a stencil. I use Dylusions Ink Spray or Marabu Acrylic Spray for projects like this but I don't always have spray on hand so I like to fill a mister with very saturated watercolor water or even ink. Pretty much any kind of fluid paint can be used to fill a mister. There is not right or wrong way for this process! I like to arrange my ferns all over the surface and I enjoy getting creative with where I place everything and then I spray lightly over the top. Using ferns as stamps and stencils on paper and canvas are one of my favorite ways to create colorful backgrounds. I also like to use the same concept on fabric and I will use fabric paint and dye (I love Jacquard dyes) with the same stencil and stamping process on fabric. This is a fun way to create one of kind fabric or scraps of fabric for sewing projects. For me, I enjoy using expressive free motion stitching to create patchwork art quilts or placemats.

Stencils are an easy way to make prints without having a printing press. The prints above were created with stencils in combination with the gelatin printing plate. The words and figure are created with what I call traditional “hole” type stencils. This was a print made from a magazine image. The purple image on the […]

Stenciling Techniques by Traci Bautista
Glue gun stencils have become my favorite thing to make, taking only minutes and giving a whizzy (new word?), quirky look. This idea is thanks to Traci Bautista and her newest book, "Printmaking Unleashed" published in 2014 by North Light Books. I must admit that I love her work and her books (previous fav is "Collage Unleashed"). Just as long as you make sure that all the lines are connected to another, they stay together and easily come off of parchment paper (Teflon sheet can be used also). The biggest one, the stripes, is 18" long and 12" tall so even big ones work. I didn't bother to flatten out most of them because the glue had already become firm (the glue is flat on the bottom but rounded on top), but if this is a problem, I'm sure I can wave a heat gun over the top to soften the glue and put a plexiglass sheet on top and press it down. Now to the actually using them as stencils!

These are some of my recent, hand-carved stamps. Most were created during the printmaking challenge that I had in July. The other ones were carved during my own, personal time. Carving really isn't that hard at all. Besides a basic carving kit + paper, all you need is patience mixed with enthusiasm + you're well on your way! Now, I want to take you through my process of carving out the large flower stamp. (I guess this is kinda like a tutorial, BUT I'll be sharing workflow tips + a general step-by-step.) As you can see here, I've started the flower stamp without taking the initial photo! Ooops! The second piece of rubber on the right side of this photo is my alternating chevron stamp. The first step is to transfer your design to the rubber/linoleum. (The black pen marks are the parts that'll be carved away.) DO NOT try to carve small details first! You'll only be working against yourself. Instead, carve away larger areas FIRST. Once your design is carved out, cut the larger portion of the rubber block. Keep this piece to make smaller stamps! Now, we're ready to load the stamp with ink...but wait - let's admire our handiwork, first....*sigh* Isn't she lovely?! Ok, back to business! I'm using an old phone book as my "inking plate". Roll out some water-soluble, block printing ink. The consistency should be very smooth. This basic stamp carving kit has everything you need. The ink is distributed evenly across the entire surface of the stamp. Does yours look like this? If not, take your brayer and roll off the excess paint, then apply excess paint to a piece of scrap paper. Time for a test print! Burnish (or gently apply pressure) to the back of the stamp. My rubber stamp is pretty thick in size (half an inch), so, I'm able to lift it and stamp it onto a piece of scrap paper with a fair amount of ease. Another option is to mount the stamp onto a block of wood, for easier handling. What a beautiful impression! This test print is helpful when determining what areas I need to carve away. I think the center area needs a little more attention...carve more hairy lines and it's a wrap! So, there you have it! Not too bad, right? Now, I'll need to figure out what projects to create with my *brand new* large flower stamp. Comment below to leave me your suggestions! 2019 Topic 16: Stamp Carving Well hello everyone, Keren here with a really creative theme for our new topic; stamp carving! I have to admit trying this once myself; years ago with a small rubber stamp. It wasn't the success I imagined it might be, and wish I'd seen some of these inspirational artists and techniques back then. Normally we'd start with a project from a PaperArtsy blogger, but I thought the perfect way to kick off the topic would be to mention Ellen Vargo who has created a wonderful range of stamps based on her stamp carvings (see more here about Ellen's carving). I've chosen this EEV03 set as a great example of the chunky style of a typical carved stamp. Ellen also created some super fine detail carved stamps for PaperArtsy too, and these finer detailed options allow a whole lot more fun in your stamped layers and colour choices. Here are a couple of examples Ellen made with her stamps showing how the bold and fine can contrast so perfectly. You might make a master-board to cut up into smaller sections as above, or even use a master-board as you background; this piece below is A4 in size for example. Starting with a simple but really striking example of a basic DIY stamp, is Anneke de Clerck with some lovely JoFY stamps, allowing that kraft to peep through provides a delicious contrast to the white paint. PaperArtsy Blog I'm a firm believer in the Sound of Music's principle of 'let's start at the very beginning'.. and this is a great blog post outlining some of the basic tools and techniques for getting started in stamp carving. Maple Post There are some really easy ways to begin your carving journey. Without forking out lots on equipment, why not start small and simple with rubbers/ erasers? The Country Chic Cottage What's really impressed me whilst researching for the topic, is the wide range of designs and the intricacy of the artwork. This example was interesting because traditionally I think of them as solid blocks. Alisa By K This example gives a really clear view of the hewn out block. Seeing the scratches and gouges shows some of the technique. Isla Joy Middleton There are some interesting blog posts about alternative substances to try your hand at carving with. How about fun foam mounted on a wood block? Approachable Art If you want to use something that nearly all of us would have hanging around our homes, why not try carving stamps with potatoes?! This simple project shows how powerful a simple repeated image can be. Mon Petit Monde Polymer Clay might seem an unlikely candidate, but Sunni Bergeron did a really interesting experiment using it. Sunny Bergeron Other experimentation can be seen with this experiment of different substances to carve with. One of the winners was Pan Shower Liner mounted on mdf. Sandrine Pelissier If you're a bit further along with carving, this is a real mine of information for the different types of carving blocks that are the best for textiles. Fly Gurl has done a great review. Fly Gurl Some of the projects you can find are simply amazing, and the sizes of the carved stamps are larger than expected too. Lili Arnold Studios What an awesome representation of a heart. Aren't the carved curved sinewy lines so very beautiful?! Salvaje I thought I'd finish by showing some gorgeous examples of some carved stamps. Suevangageldonk Intricacy makes for a spellbinding image, but it's easy to forget what you can do with one image. This image is transformed into a mandala-esque beauty. Andie Mayr Lastly, carving can produce really stylised images too..
