The sweet smell of steam. This train wasn't built for comfort, it had been built to haul sugar cane from the fields back to the mill
PG Rendeng sugar mill in Java had a system comprising two gauges, 700mm and 900mm and the depot area was mixed-gauge. Here No. 7, an 0-8-0T built by Maffei, Works No. 3968 of 1920, and a 700mm gauge loco, works into the shed area over some very complicated looking mixed-gauge pointwork! Nos. 8 and 6 can be seen on the left, O&K 0-8-0Ts of 700mm gauge. Monday 23rd July 1973. Slide No. 11700.

Apart from the 3' 6" gauge lines in Java there were a few lines of 600mm gauge, though these had closed by the time of our visit. Some of the engines for these lines were still around however, and one of them is in use here as a "kettle" to produce steam to power the pumps that kept the water tower topped up. This is at Djati depot in Probolinggo, not far from one of the lines they operated, between Balung and Ambulu near the south coast of East Java. This is one of the 0-6-0Ts of class TC10, No. TC10 06. It is still proudly carrying its maker's plate, declaring it to be Hartmann No. 3823 of 1914. Friday 27th July 1973. Slide No. 11940.
