Welcome to this months Stampers By the Dozen blog hop featuring special folds or fun folds even fancy folds, what ever you like to call them. So many choices and Pinterest was alive with suggestions, tutorials and even templates for all those folds. I have chosen the Joy Fold card for todays hop - even its name sounds nice. I have used the let it Ride stamp set that my daughter chose from the current Occasions catalogue - I let my kids pick a set each, each catalogue this one is my 19 year olds choice. I have stamped in Early Espresso then coloured the horse with Stampin' Blends. The trees in the background were coloured with our markers in Mosey Meadow, Sahara Sand and Crumb Cake. The DSP is Wood Textures. I just love how this card has the element of surprise of that piece folding in the opposite direction to what you are expecting. The 'For You' circle as 3 dimensionals over to the one side so that it acts as a clip for the front of the card. I loved how well this turned out in landscape but have a real preference for Portrait cards so check this one out I couldn't find any measurements or tutorials to help me with the cutting for this card so made it up as I went along. To say I'm happy with the finished product is an understatement. The Darling Label tag punch you will note has a nice frame around it - that's from the Everyday Label Punch chopped in half. When I first saw this FREE Lighthouse Scene Card file from Bird's SVGs I was already in love with it. Such a nice clean design and I really like lighthouses. In fact, here are a few I cross-stitched back in the day before e-cutters and paper crafting took over my creative life! And now that I'm looking at those old projects, I think I want to create a new mat for the picture on the left - it needs some stamping or patterned paper I think. Adding that to my to do list! Anyway, I couldn't resist the urge to make Bird's lighthouse really shine. Last year I had some birthday money burning a hole in my pocket, so I treated myself to a Chibitronics starter kit and started teaching myself how to build light circuits into my paper projects. The book that comes with the starter kit is great at teaching you the basics, and I've learned a lot more by reading posts and watching the accompanying videos on the Chibitronics blog. I'm still very much learning as I go along, but am happy to share what I did to make this particular card. I made some minor errors along the way, but I'll tell you when NOT to do what I did! I cut out all of the pieces in Bird's file, but also added two extra solid squares of the lightest cardstock using the same height and width dimensions as the top two darker layers. I used these to build my light circuit. First, I traced around the main window area of the lighthouse so that I knew where to add a cutout for the light to shine through. Had I thought this through in advance, I probably could have done this on my Cricut, but in this case I just traced it and cut it out with a knife. It doesn't have to be perfect, nobody will see it. I'm going to call this WINDOW LAYER. Next, I used the other extra square that I cut out to once again trace just the center of the window area to find the center point where I will stick my light down. You can see other tracing of the lighthouse and landscape shapes, but you can just ignore those. I changed my mind about the switch type I was going to use mid-project, and those markings became unnecessary. I'm calling this one the CIRCUIT LAYER. Next, I added a double layer of vellum to the BACK of the darkest blue, top lighthouse layer window area. Again, I probably could have made Cricut cut this out for me, but it was easy enough to do by hand with some vellum scraps. And here's another thing to ignore - the strips of light blue paper backing the lighthouse's smaller windows are NOT necessary! I was making it up as I went along and just made extra work for myself. Go me! Now comes the fun part - building the circuit! I'm not going to go into too much detail as you will learn how to do this in the chibitronics starter book, but I appreciate being able to see how others create their circuits and learn from it. So here it is. It's not pretty, but nobody is going to see it, so don't worry about that. I wish I had taken more pictures as I went, but I always get so caught up in lighting the light that I forgot. First I draw out the circuit on the CIRCUIT LAYER square that we marked earlier with the window center point. That little triangle sticker is the chibitronic light sticker and the yellow spot in the center of the sticker is the LED bulb. That's the part that you will want centered in the lighthouse window. I draw a small triangle there to mark where the sticker will go. The next thing I did was decide where I was going to put my battery. I'm using a push button switch for this card, so you need to place the battery where you will want to have a push spot on the front of the card. You can trace around the battery or just draw a circle where it will go. The battery will be housed in a little folder of sorts that helps complete the circuit. I used a scrap of cardstock large enough to fold around the battery and glued one side of it down where I wanted to battery to be. Next I added the copper tape. I'm going to save myself a lot of writing here and just share a link to a video by Jennifer McGuire where she demonstrates building a chibitronics circuit. It's so much easier than trying to write it out in a way that makes sense. I used some score tape inside the folder to stick the battery down. Glue works just fine too, but takes longer to dry. Remember to make sure that you have the positive and negative sides facing the way you want before you stick it! In the picture above you can ignore the extra little cross piece of copper tape on the left side of the folder. I had a small piece leftover and stuck it there for extra contact and to remind me that it was the positive side. It's not necessary at all. Finally, you are going to take your chibi light sticker and stick it down OVER the copper tape. I've seen some of the chibitronics design team folks use extra little pieces of copper tape over the top of the light sticker for extra strong contact in the circuit and have done the same here. Now you can press down on the battery folder to see if your LED lights up - it should! Next I added a bunch of foam tape around the sides and battery area. The battery area should have an extra layer of foam tape so that you have to push down on the folder flap to make the circuit light up. Otherwise, if the copper tape was making constant contact, the light would just stay lit until the battery died. Again, Jennifer does a great job of showing you exactly what to do in her video. Here's my CIRCUIT LAYER before I added the top layers to it: I neglected to take photos of the next steps (because I was busy amusing myself with the light), but just follow Bird's directions for adding the darkest top layer of the card to the middle layer and then you can glue those two on top of the WINDOW LAYER created earlier. Once that's done, you can just peel off the backing of the foam tape on your circuit layer and attach the front layers to your circuit layer. I generally only take the backing off of the tape around the perimeter of the card. On the inside, it doesn't matter if it's sticky or not, it's really just there for support. Once all of the layers are stuck together, you can glue that onto the front of the card. Jennifer mentions that she makes a note inside the card to let the recipient know about the light feature, but there are other ways. I found this fun stamp/die set from Lawn Fawn which is perfect for making interactive cards. I used it to make a 'push here' button which I adhered over the battery location on the front of the card. Now just try to keep yourself from playing with the button! I'm sure I've managed to make this seem much more complicated than it actually is. Watch Jennifer's video. Check out the Chibitronics blog. Hello there, I am sorry for the delay in blogging this last week I had technical issues, then I managed to lose my phone *twice*, well left it behind in London the first time... anyway rest assured I am not going back to my bad blogging habits :), it was just a blip. My gorgeous sister and her family have recently moved into a new home. Such an exciting time for them all, especially as they have waited an age for the right house to come up in their desired location close enough to London and their work. But by the grace of God everything worked out for them and the absolute best house is now their happy place :) And of course, I couldn't wait to make them a New Home card. Plus I had the PERFECT set, well bundle to get that job done :) I am of course talking about the At Home With You bundle. If you follow me on Instagram you will have seen this card last week. I recently started, ( well I posted twice so far LOL) posting to Instagram even though I had the account for yonks. I never started it properly, so I am dipping my toes in the water. Of course *One* has to get down with the "insta worthy pics" so if you think what's up with her trying so hard all of a sudden??? you now know why LOL Instagram is about all things beautiful and careful considered photos, so I am trying to find a style I can keep consistent going forward, oh Lordy hope it lasts. I used the framelits and some of the fabulous Wood Textures to cut the door, have you seen how cool that door it? it has a score line so you can actually open the door and pop things behind. Very cool. Of course the Brick Wall embossing folder was perfect as a textured background layer, you can get yours HERE . For the wreath and flower pots I stamped them black first then coloured the flowers using the New In Colour markers for 2017-2019 from Stampin'Up! What do you think, loving this particular bundle? I have agreed to do a craft fair soon which is a charity fundraiser to raise funds for a little boy who is very ill - see sidebar for more information. So I have been very busy making up lots of cards and other goodies to sell. One of the items I have been making is a mini emergency sewing kit so I thought I would do a quick tutorial on how to make them. This is what we are making: And these are the finished kits all prettied up in their own little packages: Start with your mini sewing kit. Then you need the following: Base (wisteria wonder in this case) 10cm x 9.5cm - score halfway along the 10cm side ie at 5cm, and score along the shorter side at 3cm. Tab (also wisteria wonder) 3cm x 5cm Designer series paper (Berry Blossoms - retired) - two pieces - one 9.5cm x 6cm and one 2.5cm x 4.5cm Two flowers punched out using Boho Blossoms punch A brad. You may need to rejig the measurements if your sewing kit is bigger or smaller. I use my grid paper from Stampin' Up! (106587 Grid Paper (100 sheets) £7.95) to help with measurements when I'm making up these type of projects - I find it really helps to be able to sketch it out before cutting out card stock that might be the wrong size! Using sticky strip fold up the card along the score line to make a pocket for your sewing kit. Round the corners of your card tab and the designer series paper (dsp) tab using a corner rounder and glue the dsp on to your tab base. Score down the middle of your tab (at 2.5cm). Attach tab to your base. Scrumple up your flowers to break down the fibres in the card and then carefully peel the two layers apart. Layer all four flowers, use your paper piercer to make a hole, and secure with a brad (I used one of the the FREE brads from the Everyday Enchantment offer - last chance to order today!) Attach flower to your designer series paper (approx 2cm-2.5cm from the edge). Glue paper to base and then fold up like a book. Use the flower to catch the tab so that your little case stays closed up. If you liked this tutorial and found it useful I'd be really happy if you left me a comment to let me know :-)

Hi Everyone, As you'll probably get I've been having some awesome fun with these Stampin Up Designer Fabrics in particular this time- Spice Cake! A lot of what I've created has been centred around a 'chook' theme, why- because I love chooks LOL! And yes even though Stampin Up does focus a lot of its products on Papercraft and Stamping etc, they are also starting to incorporate more fabric and coordinating product into their catalogues. I love this because besides my love for Photography and Scrapbooking- I have always adored sewing and patchwork. I hope in time more of the Bigz dies that are available in the USA will also come to Australia, making patchwork that much easier. So without further ado here goes- Spicy Chook Bun Warmer - Featuring Spice Cake Designer Fabric (I used a Kwik Sew pattern - 1135 for the chook pattern) Continuing in the chookie theme here is this scruffy little fellow (reminds me for some reason of the movie -'Chicken Run') and what about a little wall-hanging - Farm Fresh Close up of the stitching design. and with our little muffins or buns we are sure to want some tea, and we don't want it getting cold now do we- Spice Cake- Tea Cosy ( Jug stitchery design is Leanne May -Candlelight Creations- cosy pattern and quote by Ruth Clarke) last but not least (so far- not much fabric left LOL!) Decorative Chook (photography is giving off yellowish tint - fabrics below give true toning) The complete Spice Cake Designer Fabric Collection This collection also includes coordinating large buttons and Very Vanilla velvet ribbon and the stamp set- Spiced Paisley! and showing all my projects using these fabrics. So it just goes to show that there is as much in Stampin Up for the sewing Enthusiast as there is for the papercrafter/stamper, sometimes we combine all three :-) So hope you enjoyed the 'fabric' take on this wonderful collection- the product has plenty to offer the papercrafter and fabric lover all round.
