Growing up with a twin sister, I always had a fondness for St. Scholastica, twin sister of St. Benedict. I remember my delight when I discovered that there was a female saint who was a fraternal twin, just like me. I’ve often thought about the pious tradition around her life, in particular the story of […]

Today is the feast of St Scholastica, who was the sister of St Benedict, the father of Western monasticism. She was the abbess of a community of nuns just 5 miles from Benedict’s community at Monte Cassino in Italy. They used to meet together once a year at the convent, and on one occasion, she wanted her brother to stay on into the evening so that they could continue their conversation about the spiritual life. She said, “Let us keep talking about the joys of heaven until morning”. But Benedict refused, saying he had to return to his monastery. So, she prayed, and a storm suddenly rose up so that St Benedict couldn’t leave. She said: “You would not listen to me. So I turned to my God and He heard my prayer”. So Benedict had to stay the night, and they carried on talking about heaven until dawn. Three days later, on this day in 547, St Scholastica died, and possessed the heavenly joys she and her brothers had spoken about. St Scholastica's feast day is on 10 February, and this stained glass detail is in Downside Abbey church.
St. Scholastica, Virgin (c. 480 – 10 February 547) This saint was sister to the great St. Benedict. She consecrated herself to God from her earliest youth, as St. Gregory testifies. Where her first monastery was situated is not mentioned; but after her brother removed to Mount Cassino, she choose her retreat at Plombariola, in […]

A saint is a person who has been canonized (declared a saint) by the Church. This is normally considered to be an infallible decree of the Pope. Whilst most saints are canonized, a number are recognized as saints despite having not been canonized. All of the Old Testament prophets fall in to this category. Throughout
St. Scholastica Convent (Monastery since 1986) was officially founded January 23, 1879, at Shoal Creek, Arkansas, by the Benedictine Sisters. The Sisters moved the motherhouse to Fort Smith in 1925. Their cemetery at Fort Smith is beautiful, well-kept, peaceful, and serene. Several hundred sisters are buried on the grounds. The surnames I found were predominately German, but there were also French, Irish, English, Italian, Czech, and Polish names. Mother M. Perpetua Gerard (1879 - 1964) was the only Prioress that I found in the cemetery. I don't know if she was the first Prioress at the Fort Smith motherhouse, but I do know that she was the Prioress there in the 1930s. One thing I noticed in particular was the fact that many of the sisters lived to be quite elderly - way up into their 80s and 90s. I found two sisters that lived to be over 100. At the age of 104, Sister Louis Zink (Dec. 5, 1889 - Dec. 28, 1993) was the oldest sister. Sister Cunnigunda Rzodeczko (Nov. 8, 1886 - Mar. 26, 1989) was the second oldest at 102 years of age. Sister M. Clara Schaefer (1860-1945) had the earliest year of birth. She lived to be 85. There was only one male buried in the entire cemetery - Reverend Joseph Edward Milan (Oct. 22, 1910 - Oct. 21. 1993), who was the chaplain for the convent from 1945-1993. He lacked one day being 83 years old at the time of his death.

St Benedict was the son of a Noble in Umbria,Italy. Much like Buddha, he was surrounded by luxury, dissolution and all the material comforts. He left home at 20, called to the service of God and became an Hermit. His monks became known as the Black Monks, due to the garments they wore, the Benedictines. He helped the poor and the downtrodden, but he was more known for exorcising demons. During his saintly life, he was attacked by all manners of evil spirits, as well as monks who envied him. He performed many miracles including shattering a poisoned goblet that was intended to kill him with prayer. St. Benedict is the Patron Saint of EXORCISTS!! This blessed Medal is a symbol of him and is the only Medal that has it's own special blessing in the Roman ritual. He is called upon to rid the wearer of Evil, Envy, Jealousy, Witchcraft, Black Magick, and Spiritual Attack. It's cleansed in Holy Water and charged by me with prayers to St Benedict. Talk about the Power of Christ compels you!!! LOL!!! "Behold, I have given you the power 'to tread upon serpents' and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you." The Medal is about 1.5 inches large, it comes with a faux leather chain to be worn around your neck. This is a very powerful talisman and it comes with a St Benedict Prayer card that you can put in your wallet. There is a 12-page download that comes with it that you can print out to see information about the inscriptions on the Medal.

The Monday Hours of the Dead end on this happy note. Indeed, this miniature for the final Hour of Compline depicts the whole point of praying the Hours of the Dead: shortening the time spent by one's friends and relatives in the fires of purgatory. An angel leads an overjoyed group of naked souls from their fiery torment. In the bottom border, the vignette of a man caging birds is a secular counterpoint to the miniature's religious theme.
Today is the Feast of St. Hildegard von Bingen. St. Hildegard (1098-1179) was a visionary (she saw visions), an abbess (founding her own abbeys), a scholar (she wrote books on natural science, medicine, theology, metaphysics and music), a correspondent (with popes, scholars, kings and queens), a counselor, a linguist, a philosopher, a physician, an herbalist, a poet, an artist, a composer and lyricist (she gave us the earliest recorded music by a woman, including the first Morality play set to music - Ordo Virtutum ). Today would be a great day to look up a few of her writings or to listen to some of her music on the internet. My living group within the monastery is called St. Hildegard. In honor of our feast day, we have planned surprises throughout the day for the entire community. The first surprise was feathers on all the tables in the dining room (see quote above). It caused quite a bit of stir as people sat down for breakfast and tried to figure out why there were feathers on the tables. Another surprise is the holy card above. The front of the card is an icon written by our own Sister Paula. It is just beautiful. On the back of the card is the above quote from Hildegard herself. We printed up enough cards for each of the community members. A third surprise are St. Hildgard's cookies of joy. In a treatise on medicine, she provides a recipe for spice cookies: "Eat them often," she says, "and they will calm every bitterness of heart and mind - and your hearing and senses will open. Your mind will be joyous, and your senses purified, and harmful humours will diminish..." And to top it off - they are really good cookies! Here are a few photos our our living group preparing the cookies for the community. Mary Elizabth and Cecilia flouring the pans Joan creaming the butter Susan mixing the dough Christine sifting the flour Here I am (with Susan in the back) rolling the dough into cookies Cecilia and I continue rolling and pressing the cookies Mary Elizabeth and Cecilia placing the cookies while Christine continues to sift "These cookies are really great!" St. Hildegard's Cookies of Joy circa 1157 (Recipe reconstructed and adapted from Hildegard's treatise Physica: Liber Simplicis Medicinæ ) 3/4 cup butter or margarine (1 1/2 sticks) 1 cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1 1/2 cups flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp ground cloves Let butter soften and then cream it with the brown sugar. Beat in the egg. Sift the dry ingredients. Add half the dry ingredients and mix. Add the other half and mix thoroughly. Dough may be chilled to make it workable. Heat oven to 350°. Form walnut sized balls of dough, place on greased and floured cookie sheet and press flat. Bake 12-15 minutes (till edges of are golden brown.) Cool for 5 minutes, remove from cookie sheet and finish cooling on racks. Stay tuned for more surprises to come!!!!
Edward Mitchell Bannister was a Black Canadian-American Tonalist painter. Like other Tonalists, his style and predominantly pastoral subject matter were drawn from his admiration for Millet and the French Barbizon School. Bannister was born in St. Andrews, New Brunswick and moved to New England in the late 1840s. He was a well-known artist and ...
