--A Remote Learning Art Lesson-This art lesson was one of many that was taught online, via Zoom, during the pandemic. We were not able to meet in person but art classes continued virtually. The original art lesson was posted on the SeaSaw platform where students could access the materials including handouts and links during the week. During the pandemic I found that open ended art assignments worked very well especially because students were using whatever art supplies they had access to. I woul

Before purchasing this pattern, please read. It is important to understand charts and written instructions and have BACIS knowledge on how to create a granny/african flower motifs. if you are having difficulty with it, please reach out and I would happy to help as much as I can. I’m taking the great plunge and started designing some of my own creatures. Please bare with me as I adventure into this great big new world of Crochet designing. This pattern for my African Flower Whale is my very first EVER pattern. I have tried really hard to make it visually easy to follow, as well as written instructions. (Although I am a big visual fan, so my photos may say more.) I would greatly appreciate it if you respected my pattern(s). It’s insane how much time, effort and hair pulling goes into each new creation and pattern. Please do not sell, copy, post, share my patterns with friends, family or the monkey down the street. Please credit me as the designer and feel free to share your creations with me! I would love to see what you make! Please note: downloadable PDF ONLY of the pattern instructions making your African flower Whale …no hardcopy/finished finished item. The pattern is available only in English :) The Whale is my very first (ever!) written pattern. I have tried really hard to correct all the error (grammar and instructional) as possible. I originally created the whale as a request for a friend, and it seems to be quite a HIT! I cannot tell you the exact amount of yarn to use. It is a great way to use up all your leftover yarn. I prefer to use 2.5mm hook and fingering/sock/sport/sometimes DK weight yarn. Some important things to know when making your whale... 1. First read the whole pattern through and have a good understanding of how your whale is assembled. 2. It’s best if you know how to make the African flower motifs. I have tried really hard to describe the process in making them... but this is my first pattern so I’m sure I missed something... hopefully I didn’t. 3. I use the “join as you go” method as described in Heidi Bears Designs. If you don’t know it or are not comfortable with that method, then I suggest sewing it together. Material needed: The whale that has been crocheted for this pattern was made using sock weight/DK. Using this weight yarn will give you a whale approximately 33cm long, 11cm tall, 11cm wide. Written in AMERICAN CROCHET TERMS Crochet Hook 2.5mm I like my stitches TIGHT. So adjust your hook to the weight of your yarn and to your skill level. Polyester toy stuffing Scissors, blunt end Needle used for sewing in ends and sewing fins on Eyes (15mm plastic safety eyes or wire-looped eye buttons are my preferred). If you use “look alike” safety toy eyes, I have provided instructions for eye lids. NOTE BUTTON OR EYES CAN BE A SAFETY HAZARD FOR SMALL CHILDREN! If this toy is for a child, perhaps crochet eyes and sew them on. Still create eye sockets before embroidering the eyes on…this adds character to your creation. Basic Crocheting Skills: Chain stitch (ch) , Single Crochet (sc), Double Crochet (dc), Slip Stitch (sl st), joining a chain to make a ring, joining in a new color yarn If you find an error or a step that doesn’t make sense, message me, and I will try to help you as best as I can. Dive in and create your whale!! Tasha

Earlier last week, fellow Rockin' Arts Mom Kristen from Art History Mom shared a really neat way to introduce young children to the artwork of Henri Matisse. I was so intrigued by her post that I did a shortened version of her lesson with my 2 1/2 year old son. Wow. I was so pleasantly surprised at how Chuck responded. He loved looking at the artwork, counting the figures, and finding different colors and shapes. Since Matisse's collages are so colorful and graphic looking, we then tried making our own Matisse inspired artwork at home. Kids Make Matisse Inspired Collages (This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support.) Aren't they beautiful? Now little did I know, Kristen (from Art History Mom) also had a similar idea in mind. She ended up making these lovely Playdough and Construction Paper Collages with her son. I think that using play dough to make collages is such a cool idea, so definitely check out her activity too! Materials Needed to Make Matisse Inspired Collages Construction Paper Scissors (Adult and Kid-friendly scissors) Glue (Glue Sticks and Elmer's Glue) Let's Make Matisse Inspired Collages! 1. I first did Art History Mom's Henri Matisse Lesson with Chuck. Then, we looked at some of Matisse's other collages online. (Note: If you're a book lover, you could also read one of these Matisse books for Kids.) 2. Then, I explained that we were going to make our own collages just like Matisse. So, we pulled out some construction paper and cut out shapes. I cut out the more complicated ones to resemble some of the shapes found in Matisse's artwork. 3. Then we glued our shapes on. (Chuck said this collage was supposed to be a bumble bee. Can you see the resemblance?) Once our artwork dried, we had some lovely Matisse-inspired artwork of our own. I enjoyed this activity because we got to talk about art, math (counting, shapes, and spatial relations), and colors. Chuck seemed to enjoy the activity because he got to use scissors (which always ups the coolness factor of any project) and glue (which he enjoyed wiping everywhere.) Let me know if you try this activity out with your kids! I think they'll have fun (and learn some things too.) (Side note: I learned about Matisse's personal history too... it was super inspiring.) And if you're looking for other fun ways to make art with your kids, try these three fun activities out! Melted Crayon Art Super Easy Abstract Art Edible Tortilla Art Happy making!

It is interesting to observe the way that female Saints like Joan of Arc enthrall people who in other areas of their life are quite uninterested or even antipathetic toward the Catholic Church. I think this is because the female Saints represent an emancipation of the feminine genius, a true "feminism," that emerged far before the modern movement.

I've been wanting to create a lesson that incorporated chalk pastel for a while now. In the past I've always stuck with landscapes or a larger still life, but today I did slumbering bears with my class and they turned out as cute as can be. I kept the chalk pastel part of the project fairly simple since it was their first time experimenting with a new material. First we practice drew our bears sleeping. Start with a medium to large size circle in the middle of the paper. I emphasized that nothing should be drawn too small, blending chalk pastel works better in larger shapes. After drawing our circle for the head we filled in the rest of the face, added ears, a nightcap, collar, quilt cover, paws, and pillow. Next we outlined our drawing in sharpie and colored in the quilt, nightcap, and collar with oil pastels. Paint would work fine too! Using yellow and brown chalk pastel, we added color to the hands, face, and ears. We used a little blue chalk pastel for the pillow and some students added a purple shadow under the pillow. Too Cute! Enjoy!! (If you'd like detailed instructions for this lesson please feel free to email [email protected], thank you!)
