On Sunday in my Pre-K/K Sunday School class, we were learning about the parable that Jesus told about the rich fool in Luke 12:16-21. This is a great Bible Worksheets "Needs Versus Wants" Worksheets & Object Lesson for Children

This week's lesson are three parables from Jesus. These are the visuals I set up. The barn is a bird house I found at a craft store and painted. I found the grain stalks during the fall and added some Fisher Price fencing and more bales of grain. The Pearl of Great Price is a basket with larger (8 mm) pearl beads. The treasure is a wood box that I found at Hobby Lobby. I just used brown fabric (or felt or actual dirt). I let the students have a treasure chest, added a pearl bead and a grain stalk. Then, add stickers of Jesus, the Bible, Heaven and discuss what real treasure is. In Jesus’ day, usually when a father died, the oldest son inherited two times what the other children received. There was crowd of people where Jesus was teaching and someone said to Jesus “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus asked him who made Jesus the judge? Jesus isn’t here to settle these problems; He wants to preach the gospel. Jesus said to be careful of being greedy because your life isn’t about having an great quantity of things. Jesus told this parable in Luke 12:13-21 to help the people understand the point He wanted to make. There was a rich man and his fields had produced so much that he thought to himself: “Now what should I do? I do not have enough room to store all my crops?” The rich man told himself, I’m going to do this… I will tear down the barns that I have and build BIGGER barns. That’s where I’ll store my crops and property. And I will say to myself, You have so much stored up, enough for many years. I’ll take it easy and celebrate! But God said to the rich man, “You’re a fool! Tonight you will die, then who will prosper from all your possessions?" There are a lot I’s in today’s parable.. vs. 21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” Jesus told them not to worry about THINGS, but our Bible verse for today says: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Jesus is telling the people, what good does it do for you to make a lot of money, and save it and not help others and give back to God? This rich man should have thought about who needed his help, since he had more than he needed. Let's look at two other short parables that Jesus told in Mathew 13:44-46. They tell us about how great the kingdom of Heaven is and how our whole goal should be to go there. This first parable is about a man that found a hidden treasure in a field. The man hid the treasure, then he went and sold everything he had so he could buy that field. Since he now owned the field, he also owned the treasure! It was worth the cost to sell everything he had! This next parable Jesus told is about a merchant. He was looking for beautiful pearls. The merchant found a pearl that was worth a lot of money! The merchant sold everything he had, just so he could buy that one pearl! Jesus, said it is worth giving all you can to enter the kingdom of Heaven! All of these parables are telling us to make sure we have our priorities in the right place, and Jesus said that it worth giving up all the worldly stuff to go to heaven. This project requires some work on the teacher's part before class, but it is a great discussion starter. I left some of the jewels blank for the students to add thoughts that are brought up during the discussion. You can print it here. VERSES: Luke 12:16-21 MEMORY VERSE: Luke 12:21 "So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." BOOK TO REMEMBER: James. Write "James" on small slips of paper for the students to take home and memorize another book of the New Testament. Practice saying all the books of the New Testament together as a class or sing the song, The Books Of The New Testament, found under March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #3 as review. PRAYER: Pray that we will always put God first in our lives and place everything else below Him. SPECIAL SONG: Jesus Taught By Parable And Miracle (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #4 on this blog. Click on orange circle to hear tune.) VISUAL AID: Make a large Activity like the one below under Activity. LESSON POINTS: As Jesus daily walked around Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem, there were always a crowd of people who gathered around Him. Perhaps they were waiting for Him to perform a miracle and they wanted to see Him make a lame person walk, maybe they had heard about Jesus and were curious to see what He looked like, or maybe they wanted to hear what He had to say. Whatever their reasons, the people followed Jesus as He visited their towns. Sometimes there were just a few people following, but many times, there were great crowds of people. Because microphones and speakers had not been invented yet, the people had to be quiet and listen closely and remember what Jesus had said because there were no tape recorders or smart phones to record what He was saying. No, the people--all the people--listened quietly to Jesus as He spoke. When Jesus preached to the people, sometimes He said exactly what the people should do. He commanded them like He did when He taught on the Sermon on the Mount. Sometimes He would heal someone who everyone in the town knew to get their attention, then He would teach the people. Sometimes He told the people stories or parables to paint a picture in the people's minds, so they could remember the lesson and also understand the lesson. One thing remained true: Jesus always taught by His example. He lived what He taught. In the lesson today, Jesus taught a parable about a very rich man who forgot something. Jesus taught the people lessons by talking about something they knew, like farming for example, then he would apply the lesson to something spiritual. He told the story about a man who farmed land and his land grew a great amount of fruit. We don't know what kind of fruit it was, but there was a lot of it and the rich man put it in barns. God had blessed the man's land so much that the man began thinking about what he would do with all the fruit. He thought to himself, "What will I do? I have so much fruit that I don't have enough room for it all. I know! I will tear down all of my barns and I will build much larger barns and then I will put all of my fruit inside. I will say to myself--I have much fruit stored up for many years, so I will eat, drink, and be merry." BUT...the rich man forgot something! He forgot God and he forgot that he was going to die. God said to the rich man, "You fool! Tonight your soul is required of you! Then who will own all those things that you have stored up?" At the end of the parable, Jesus said, "Someone who stores up treasures on this earth and is not rich towards God is just like that rich fool." Jesus did not want us to be like that rich man who forgot God. He wanted us to always put God first in our lives, then God would always give us everything we need. (Matthew 6:12). What does that mean, "Put God first?" That's right! It means to always do spiritual things before we do the earthly things. First, we go to Bible class, then we can play soccer or go to the mountains. It means that whatever we do in life--get a job, play sports, etc.--we need to put God above those things. "Older Student" Tips: Discuss what a 'fool' is. Someone who is not smart. Talk about how smart Jesus was to tell parables about the things that the people knew: farming, cleaning house, finding a treasure, losing a sheep, etc. The people He taught could understand what the meaning was to His lessons. Have everyone open their Bibles to Luke 12:16-19 and count how many times the rich man said the words, "I" or "my". Then, count how many times he said anything about helping others or giving back to God. ACTIVITY: Parable of the Rich Fool Materials needed: 6" x 9" red construction paper, 5" x 12" light brown construction paper, 4.5" x 8" dark brown construction paper, 3" x 3" dark brown construction paper, glue, scissors, marker, crayons. Hand out light brown paper. This is the roof. Cut edges off two short sides of light brown paper to resemble a roof. Hand out red paper. This is the barn. Glue top edge of red barn. Place the bottom of the roof on top of the barn. Hand out dark brown paper. This is the barn door. Cut in half. Fold one edge of each dark brown square. Glue only the small folded edge. Place glued edges of two barn doors away from each other on top of the red barn. The doors should open. Hand out small dark brown paper. This is the hayloft. Cut in half. Fold one edge of each small dark brown square. Glue only the small folded edge. Place glued edges of two hayloft doors away from each other on top of the roof. The doors should open. Write "The Rich Fool" and "Luke 12:16-21" on top of the roof. Open large barn doors. Inside the large barn doors on the red barn, write "The rich fool said, 'I will build greater barns...I will eat, drink, and be merry.' But..." Open small brown doors of the hayloft. Write "...but he forgot God." On both sides of each of the barn doors, make a large "X". On the small hayloft doors, make black or brown lines to resemble wood. On the roof, make lines to resemble a roof. Before leaving class, have the students read what it says inside all doors.

We used Mick Inkpen's Parable of the Rich Farmer/ fool for the story, obviously we usually use props but this is such a lovely version and actually worked well on a large projector screen Via powerpoint. Although I did feel much like a teacher and even commented on this and said come on gather in so I don't feel so teachery to which a group of the older children and adults parroted "Good morning Miss.. good morning everyone" Oh how I laughed. Building Barns There were several response activities to explore the idea of building barns for the crops. The AMAZING box barn! The brilliant marshmallow and spaghetti barn for the greedy kids to store marshmallow's. No joke we did have to discuss sharing, when one group stored up too many marshmallows. A favourite game in junior church "make and break challenge" where you race to copy the card building with blocks using tongs. Jenga building Duplo building, particularly suitable for little ones. Building farm building with the Haba farm, and ikea farm across the field. Planting Digging around in paper shredding to find pesky bugs (came in one of the boxes for the box barn building seemed a shame to waste) Digging in the desert Pretend planting (vegetable label cards, pots, shovels etc.) Painted tree from fits of the spirit with some invaders. Story tent Creative Opportunities Clay bugs and plants. Boxes for decorating and storing more important things than riches (we had hearts to represent love and stimulate discussion) Hama hearts (unused, I loved these as a child maybe not displayed nice enough or too much else) Icing bugs Fruit/ veg printing There were some profound elements to todays session responses including the mention that maybe this barn was built so pointy to point to God. Concluded by this picture below, some decided that the "death" picture actually had a cross to remind us of Jesus and point to God. WOW! Can't argue with that, adults have a lot to learn from kids and Jesus told us that why don't we listen.

Use the Zacchaeus Meets Jesus Decoder as a fun activity for your next children's sermon.

This is a couple of lessons combined and includes Jesus having breakfast with His disciples, the great catch of fish and Jesus returning to heaven. Review: After Jesus died on the cross, He rose out of the tomb, just like He said He would. Jesus met with His disciples and told them what He wanted them to do. Read John 20:30-31. We’re not told everything, just what God thought we need to know. Lesson: Scripture is John 21:1-Acts1:11. The disciples were waiting to see Jesus again, and Peter decided to go going fishing. Six other disciples tell him they would go also. (Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the brothers: James & John and two more disciples not named) The disciples were at the Sea of Galilee. They fished all night, but they did not catch any fish. In the morning, there was a man on the shore, and they didn’t know who He was. He asked them if they had any food and they said no. He told them to “Cast the net on the right side of the boat and they would find some.” (John 21:6) When they tried to pull up the net, it was so full of fish, they couldn’t pull up the net! (Another miracle) John told Peter that it’s Jesus! Peter was so excited that he pulled on his coat and jumped into the sea and swam to the shore! The other disciples went in the fishing boat and dragged it to the shore, pulling the full net behind them. (About 100 yards) The net was too full to pull into the boat! Once they landed on shore, they saw a fire with fish laid on it and there was bread also. Jesus told them to “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” Simon Peter went over and dragged the net onto land. It was full of large fish! There were 153 fish, and the net wasn’t torn! Jesus told them to “Come and eat breakfast!” When they went over to Jesus, He gave them bread and fish to eat. This is the third time that Jesus showed Himself to the disciples after He rose from the dead. (John 21:14) Some days later, the eleven disciples went to Galilee to the mountain where Jesus told them to go. Judas didn't go, since he betrayed Jesus for the 30 pieces of silver. (Matthew 28:16-20) When they saw Jesus, they worshipped Him. AND Jesus told them what they were to do. This also tells us what we are to do: Jesus told the disciples to Go out into the whole world and make disciples of all people. Jesus said to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told the disciples to teach the people all the things that He has taught them and remember that He will always be with them. Forty days after the resurrection of Jesus, Jesus returned to heaven after He had talked to His disciples. He is sitting on the right side of God in heaven. (Acts 1:3; Mark 16:19-20) The disciples kept staring up into heaven where Jesus had gone! There were two men in white clothes standing beside the Disciples. The two men asked them "Why are you staring at heaven where Jesus went? Someday, Jesus will return the same way that He left." And they went to Jerusalem worshipping and praising Jesus. I collected sticks for the students to “cook” foam (or cardstock) fish (Accucut jumbo fish) over the fire like Jesus did. I also had a basket of bread to eat. ( I handed out round crackers and goldfish... Happy time! They love snacks and they are rare in my class!) Picture on left: I have been using the blow up fire found here for my class. I needed something quick and easy for my Wednesday night class and I found this one. They love it just as much and it is so much easier to use! And, I don't have kids knocking the parts over. We gathered around the campfire for the Bible lesson, then did our worksheet and craft at the table. (Yes, I borrowed my granddaughters campfire! I have the boat and Jesus on the beach on the same table. It looks like the beach is next to the water.) (I have done this project with my classes for years. They really do love it!) You need blue cups, with a small hole in the bottom, the yarn [or string] is about 12" long and inserted through the hole. I made a loop and knotted it at the top, then Jesus is glued to the other end of the yarn. He can go up inside the cup to return to heaven. The kids glue Jesus to the yarn, and the cotton to the cup. I My husband ☺ made a campfire with wood screwed to a square piece of wood. I crumbled up red, yellow and orange tissue paper and put on the bottom to cover the wood and placed sticks across the logs. I made “flames” out of red, orange and yellow cardstock and stuck them in. LESSON POINTS: Note: This may be a lesson designed for older students due to its content. Please read through the lesson to see if your students would understand this lesson before you teach it. People wonder about what happens after we die and Jesus gave us a glimpse into the unseen world through this lesson. The story that Jesus told was about a rich man who had no name and a poor man whose name was Lazarus. (This was not the same man who lived in Bethany, who had two sisters named Mary and Martha, and was raised from the grave. This was another man named Lazarus. Both men had the same name, but that was the only connection.) Jesus said that the rich man lived a wonderful, easy life on this earth. He wore clothes that were purple and wore fine linen which was something only the very rich people did in Bible times. This man was very rich! He ate what he wanted and as much as he wanted. He lived in a fine house and had a wonderful life. There was also a beggar or a very, very poor man named Lazarus. Lazarus had a very hard life. He had big sores all over his body and could not help himself. He relied on kind, compassionate people to lay him by the gate where rich people would see him and perhaps give him a little something. He had a desire to be fed with the few crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, but his desire was ignored. Dogs would come and lick his sores. It was extremely hard being poor in Bible times. One day the beggar died and the angels carried him to a place of comfort called Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried, and lifted his eyes in Hades to see Abraham far away and Lazarus was close beside him. The rich man was tormented and distressed. The rich man was also very, very thirsty. When he saw Lazarus, he cried and spoke to Abraham. He said, "Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip his finger in water that he may cool my tongue, for I am tormented by this flame." But Abraham replied, "Son, remember that in your lifetime, you received many good things and Lazarus received bad things. Now, Lazarus is comforted and you are tormented. Besides that, there is a great gulf that is fixed between us. Those who would want to go to where you are, cannot. And those who would want to come to us, cannot." The rich man then turned his thoughts to his family and requested that Abraham would send Lazarus to his home where he had five brothers. He wanted Lazarus to tell them what had happened because he did not want his brothers coming to where he was tormented. But, Abraham said no. He said that his brothers had Moses and the prophets to listen to; his brothers could hear them. The rich man persisted. He said to Abraham, "No, Father Abraham, if one would go to them from the dead, they would repent." Abraham had the last word. He said, "If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither would they be convinced if someone rose from the dead." From this lesson that Jesus taught, we can learn many things. After death, there is a place of comfort and a place of torment. How we live on this earth will determine where we go when we die. Having riches on earth does not mean much after a person dies. The rich man could not take any of his wealth with him when he died. It is very hot in the place of torment. There is no water in the place of torment. There is no comfort in the place of torment. Do people know each other after they die? The rich man knew Abraham and Lazarus. Abraham knew the rich man. There is a great gulf or chasm between the place of comfort and the place of torment and it cannot be changed. It is fixed or fastened securely in position. No one can travel from one place to the other. Surely, many would want to go to the place of comfort, but they cannot. Many people wonder about what will happen after they die and make up comforting thoughts and their own ideas such as purgatory and limbo, but we find no mention of any of those ideas in God's Word. It is important to know that we, as Bible students, can only teach and say what is written in God's Word (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). God's Word is sufficient or it is enough for people to learn to turn from their wicked ways and turn towards God and His Word (Psalm 119:105, 130). While we live on this earth, it is a time to prepare for where we will spend eternity. We need to read God's Word and learn how to live and behave, so we will live in the place of comfort. ACTIVITY: The Rich Man And Lazarus Materials needed: 12" x 18" any light and bright color of construction paper, crayons, marker. Hand out paper. Write "THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS" AND "Luke 16:19-31" at the top of the paper, portrait-style. Write "WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THIS LESSON:" List the the things that were learned from this lesson (see last paragraph under Lesson Points above.)

The printables can be printed for a workbook with the worksheets and a picture to color and a maze or however you can use them. I have another workbook I still call a lapbook, but it has lapbook style questions on the left side, and on the right is a create a picture (I guess you can call it) where the students glue clipart and/or die cuts to design a picture for that days Bible lesson. See photos: I print this booklet and glue to the inside front cover as a review and "Get them thinking" type thing. It can be used if there is a short lesson, and you want to write in it one page at a time. It certainly can be used on its own as a project. For the lapbook, I attached the pages with a brad (or it can be stapled) and glued it to the page.
