I LOVE encouraging my KIDDOS to Memorize Memory Verses. I have used PUZZLES, BEADS, STICKERS, etc. to TRACK the KIDDOS SUCCESS in getting those Memory Verses Memorized. Well, I had a BUNCH of these little Tomato containers. They were all given to me by one of our members. I LOVE it when Members of the congregation walk up to me and hand me a BAG of GOODIES and say...."I was thinking you might want to use these for SOMETHING." I truly get GIDDY. At first I was not SURE what I was going to do with these...so, I PUT them away in my Craft Cabinet. So, with the CHANGE of SEASONS, the CHANGE of our ATTENDANCE Bulletin Board, I decided we need to CHANGE up our MEMORY VERSE TRACKING SYSTEM. The KIDDOS BEAD TRACKERS are FULL of BEADS.....So, that got me to thinking.....WHAT am I gonna do to excite the KIDDOS and encourage the KIDDOS to KEEP MEMORIZING their MEMORY VERSES? Well, I went to the CRAFT Cabinet and saw ALL those little tomato containers and began to think... At first I THOUGHT about doing FISH BOWLS....but, I did not have enough little FISH type toys. HUM. So, I kept "playing" with these containers. I happened to flip one upside down on top of the little "bowl" and that is when it all began to come together.....I decided I was going to make them into GUM BALL MACHINES!!!! (I do think they look like humming bird feeders or lanterns....I will have to REMEMBER that in the future.) I used a glue called "3 in 1 Glue" that I purchase at Hobby Lobby. I LOVE this glue. I simply turned the BOWL upside down and glued the container to it. Then I used a second container and added glue around the rim and attached it to the first container. To make the little TOP HAT cover, I cut out the center from the second yellow bowl. Sounds confusing....sorry. It really is not hard to do at all....I hope the pictures explain it better. :-) That is the CENTER that I cut out to make the "TOP." of the Gum Ball Machine. The KIDDOS will be able to LIFT the LID to add a "GUM BALL" for every Memory Verse they Memorize. I then added a "Coin Slot and Knob." I just used my clip art program, PRINTED this out. Laminated it for stability and attached it to the front. Now, for DISPLAYING these GUM BALL MACHINES. I decided to set them up on the front edge of our display table. This will give the KIDDOS easy access to add their "Gum Ball." I added 2 strips of Bulletin Board Boarder Paper to the edge of the table. Then I added a GUM BALL Machine that says, "WE'RE ON THE 'BALL' MEMORIZING OUR MEMORY VERSES." Now, the KIDDOS will NOT be adding REAL GUM BALLS to there Gum Ball Machines. They will be adding colorful Pom Pom Balls. I HAVE a BUNCH of Pom Pom Balls....I buy them at Hobby Lobby when they go on clearance. I buy them at Garage Sales. I buy them at Thrift Stores. I have had them given to me....I think I may have a Pom Pom Ball fetish. LOL. The KIDDOS will get to PICK out their "GUM BALL" each week. I LOVE ALL the colors and styles of the Pom Pom balls. BTW, this is just two of my containers of Pom Pom balls....I think i have two or three more containers full. Like I said, I think I may have a fetish. I think they turned out really cute!!! And since they were FREE and I already had the POM POM Balls, this will be a very inexpensive Memory Verse Tracking System. I hope you enjoyed seeing our NEW MEMORY VERSE TRACKING SYSTEM. I LOVE getting the KIDDOS excited about MEMORIZING their Memory Verses. My encouragement to you....Gracefully accept ALL donations. Organize your donations. Think about that "TRASH" in a NEW WAY. If you have not put it to use in a year....It is OK to THROW IT AWAY!! I promise more donations will always come your way. Blessings, Ronda
These seriously fun Bible memory verse games will help your kids memorize Bible verses in a way that is active and engaging!
It's not a chore! Learning scripture can be fun if you know the right games. Test these creative ideas and help kids make amazing progress! Download & Print PDF
Here is the take home sheet for our 7-11s group this week. We're looking this term at the sermon on the mount and this week the topic is love! This is a game to help children to learn the memory verse. Written down, the rules seem complicated, but when you play the game it's easy to understand! Cut out the net and make the cube up. Print out a copy here. Play with a partner To start you must throw face 1 (the first part of the verse). Partner A throws the cube. If they do not land on face 1, they will have to throw again on their next turn! Partner B then has a turn. The object of the game is to 'earn' each part of the verse in the correct order and to write it down. After face 1, the task is to throw face 2 and then face 3 and so on. Landing on face 5 after face 2, for example, does not count as this is not the correct order! The winner is the first person to write down the verse in the correct order.
VERSES: Job 1:1-42:17 MEMORY VERSE: Job 1:1 "There was man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Romans. Write "Romans" on small slips of paper and hand out to the students at the end of class. PRAYER: Pray that we not only have the patience of Job, but the integrity of Job. SPECIAL SONG: Be Patient And Kind (see April - Lesson - Joseph Meets His Brothers Who Hated Him on this blog). Click on orange circle for tune. VISUAL AID: Write "JOB" on whiteboard or chalkboard. List the troubles Job had as you tell the story. LESSON POINTS: In very ancient times, a long, long time ago, there was a man named Job. Although it is spelled like the word "job" which is a chore you would do, this man's name was pronounced "Job" which rhymes with the word "robe." He was a godly man who served God with his whole heart. The Bible calls him "perfect and upright" and a "man of integrity." He lived in a country that we have never heard of before; it was called Uz. He had seven sons and three daughters. He was, also, very rich! He had 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 donkeys, and a great number of servants. He was the most important man in all of the east. But the most important thing about Job was that he loved and served the LORD God. One day, Satan came among the sons of God to present themselves before the LORD. The LORD asked Satan, "From where did you come?" Satan said he had been going back and forth on the earth. The LORD asked Satan if he had considered His servant, Job. The Lord said that there was no man like His servant Job in all of the earth. Satan said that Job only served the LORD because Job was given much, but if all of Job's 'things' were taken away, then he would curse God. God said that everything Job had was now in Satan's power, meaning he could take anything of Job's away from him, but he could not put his hand on Job or hurt him in any way. On another day, all seven of Job's sons and all three of his daughters were eating together in the oldest son's house. While Job was at his house and not with his children, a messenger came up to Job and said that the oxen were plowing in the field and the donkeys were feeding close by. The Sabeans or a nation around Uz stole the animals and killed all of the servants, except the messenger who was telling Job the news. While that messenger was still talking, another messenger came up to Job and told him that fire from the sky had come down and burned up all of Job's sheep and the servants who were watching them. They all died, except the messenger who was telling Job the news. While the second messenger was still talking, there came another messenger up to Job and told him that another nation, the Chaldeans, came up in three groups and stole the camels and killed all of the servants, except the messenger who was telling Job the news. While the third messenger was still talking, there came another messenger up to Job and told him that while his children were eating together in one house that a great wind blew in from the wilderness and struck all four corners of the house and when the roof caved in on them, they all died, except the messenger who was telling Job the news. When all the messengers stopped talking, Job got up, tore his coat, shaved his head, fell down on the ground and worshiped the LORD. Job said that he came into this world with nothing, and he would go out of this world with nothing. The Bible says that in all of the things that happened to Job, he did not sin or say that it was God's fault all the bad things had happened. Another day, Satan came again with the sons of God and the LORD asked Satan, "From where did you come?" Satan again said that he had been going back and forth on the earth. The LORD asked Satan again if he had considered His servant, Job. The Lord said that there was still no man like His servant Job in all of the earth. Satan said that Job only served the LORD because he was healthy, but if his bone and flesh were touched, then he would curse God. God said that Job had was now in Satan's power, meaning he could do anything to Job, but he could not take Job's life. So Satan struck Job with boils from his head to his toes. Job was in such pain and misery. He took a piece of pottery and scraped his boils and then went and sat in a pile of ashes. They did not have medicines like we have today, but ashes were clean and helped ease the pain a bit. While, in his pain, Job's wife was very discouraging. She said that Job should curse God and die! Is that what Job should have done? NO! Job said she spoke as one of the foolish women. Job asked her if they should only receive good things all the time and not bad? In all that was said during this time, Job did not sin or blame God for his troubles. Job was very patient. Job had three friends who had heard of all the bad times Job was going through and they all came by to visit him at the same time. Job was in such bad condition and looked so badly that his friends did not even know Job until they were very close to him! When they saw Job, they cried, tore their clothes and put dirt on their own heads because they were grieved that Job was going through so much pain and suffering. So the three friends did what many friends would not do. They sat with Job for seven days without saying a word. They gave him comfort by just being there with him because they could tell that he was hurting a great deal. Then Job and his three friends had very long discussions. They talked for a while and listened for a while, they scolded Job because they thought that he must have done something very wrong, but the story of Job teaches that bad things happen to good people. We just must learn to be patient and never blame God. Finally, the LORD talked to Job, Job answered some of God's questions and Job listened to God. Job humbled himself before God and recognized the fact that the LORD could do anything! God was powerful and had--and has--control over all things on the earth and in heaven. In the end, the LORD restored Job's health, his riches, his servants, and Job even had seven more sons and three daughters. The only thing different than in the beginning of the story of Job is that the LORD blessed him with twice as much as he had before! All of Job's friends came to see him and brought him gifts. Everyone brought him a piece of money and an earring of gold. So everything was better for Job in the end compared to the beginning. The Bible mentions that Job's daughters were more beautiful than any in the land. Job lived 140 more years and saw his children, his grandchildren, his great-grandchildren and his great-great-grandchildren grow up. Then Job died being old and full of days. What can we learn from Job? We learn to be very patient and longsuffering. We learn that bad things happen to good people. We learn that through the silence of the scriptures, God never told Job why all of this happened, or at least it was not written in the book of Job. "Older Student" Tips: Discuss what it means, "Bad things happen to good people." Talk about the meaning of "God allows trials to take place." Read 1 Corinthians 10:13. ACTIVITY: Job's Patience Materials needed: 6" x 12" piece of construction paper (any light color), marker, crayons. Hand out paper. Fold paper in thirds, so that the two edges meet in the middle. See picture. On the outside, folded paper, write "Bad Things Happen To Good People Like Job", writing the word "JOB" is beautiful letters. Write "Job 1-42" on the outside of the folded paper. Open up paper completely. Draw two lines down the folds of the paper. In the middle section, write "We need to be patient like Job and never blame God." On right section, write "BEFORE" at the top and then list what Job possessed, for example, write "Rich," "7,000 (draw a sheep)", "3,000 (draw a camel)", "500 yoke of (draw an ox)", "500 (draw a donkey)", and many servants. On left side, write "AFTER" at the top and then list what Job possessed, for example, "very rich", "14,00 sheep", "6,000 camels", "1,000 yoke of oxen", "1,000 donkeys", "many servants", "10 children", "lived 140 more years". Color pictures of animal and decorate the middle section without covering up the words.

1. REVIEW: Memory Verse (Psalm 23) The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies, You anoint my head with oil my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. As we choose to follow our Good Shepherd, we get to live and enjoy the benefits of His Kingdom, ie. His protection, His supply, His care, His guidance .. not just for today or tomorrow, not temporarily but forever, for always. 2. Activity Suggestions: A. Race Prepare a path with various objects. Each kid has to go through the path, picking up the object and saying the verse that goes with it. Before the race, review the psalm with each object. Get kids to repeat verse as teacher holds up each object. E.g. hold up staff, "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing." hold up mat. "He makes me lie down in green pastures." etc.. “The Lord is my shepherd”: A staff/stick ‘He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters’: A green rug to roll on, with a bowl of water at the end ‘He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.’: Walk along a 1’ x 4’ foam tile on the ground ‘Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil’: Crawl under/through a dark blanket/cloth ‘for you are with me ; your rod and your staff, they comfort me’:Pick up a staff or rod and hug it. ‘You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies,’: Eat 1 piece of cracker [must finish before moving on]. ‘You anoint my head with oil’: Dab a bit of oil (baby oil / olive oil) on forehead. ‘my cup overflows.’: Fill a small cup till it overflows ‘Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,’:Tie / loop a balloon on each ankle [each with the words goodness and love] using a rubberband after which the racer has to race to the finish line. ‘And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.': At the finish line, the racer has to sit on a chair labeled “God’s house’. B. Quiz / Recap Spell ‘psalm’. In Psalm 23, what comforts the sheep? What is the difference between the rod and staff? Who is the Good Shepherd? What does it mean, “the Lord prepares a table before you in the presence of your enemies”? There is a place for us at the Lord’s table; We can feast in peace even when there’s trouble all around because the Good Shepherd is with us and watching over us What does it mean, “my cup overflows”? God’s supply always overflows – meets all our needs. Our cup is full of God’s life, goodness and blessings. Who wrote Psalm 23? What does the shepherd do for you ? Takes care, protects, feeds his sheep – The Lord is our supply. When we have Jesus, we have everything. What does it mean, “You anoint my head with oil”? Oil: covers us so the irritations of life don’t bother [bug] us. The Good Shepherd anointed us … and gave us His Spirit (2 Cor 1:21-22) – gives us peace with others, we let His love flow in & through us Heals – oil used to clean and heal wounds .. can be physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. What does “He refreshes my soul” mean? The Good Shepherd gives us a ‘new life’ – not just patches up / repairs / clears our mess.
Our lesson this Sunday is focusing on David being a "MAN after GOD'S HEART!" We are going to be learning about the Psalms that David wrote. We will talk about a few of the Psalms...but, our primary focus will be on the beloved 23 Psalm. I want the KIDDOS to understand the LOVE, TRUST, DEVOTION, GRATITUDE and PRAISE that David had for GOD. The Psalms are a wonderful way of seeing these attributes in David's life. Since our focus is on Psalms 23, I decided the KIDDOS will be making a Sheep for their TAKE HOME project. These are made from white fluffy yarn, cardstock and black chenille sticks. I PRE MADE the PUFF balls, for the body, and attached the legs ....that way during class the kiddos will be coloring the face and heart and gluing them onto the sheep's body. (I used white fluffy yarn for the sheep's body. I wrapped the yarn around some cardboard, secured the yarn, then cut the yarn to make a pom pom.) You could probably use LARGE Manufactured Pom Poms...but, I could not find any BIG enough to make me happy. If you look closely at these pics, you can tell the legs are made from popsicle sticks. However, after making my prototype---I decided that black chenille sticks would work better. So, I decided to change out the legs....I am much happier. You have probably figured out our Memory Verse....even before looking at this. I think this verse is a PERFECT choice. We will sing this verse a few times before the Kiddos leave class this Sunday. I figure they will all have it memorized before they even leave the classroom. :) We will NOT have a NEW place to add to our MAP. But, we will be referring to the MAP during the lesson. BTW, I thought I would share with you one of the ways I review a past lesson. All those pics around the map are from our Explorer Journal Activities. I also display the Memory Verses next to the pics. Makes it easy to review a story or past memory verse if I keep them on display. A while back, I purchased this banner at our local Bible bookstore. It was on clearance for $1.19!! I thought this would be a perfect time to display this....since we are focusing on Psalms 23. Our review game will be Psalm 23 Bingo. The Kiddos will answer a question from the story and then get to pull a card....Then they will MARK their Bingo Card with a Sheep Marker. Each of the BINGO cards have the SAME pictures....They are just in different places on the cards. So, each time a card is picked....the every on of the KIDDOS will get to add a sheep to their card. The Sheep Markers were CUPCAKE Picks, that I purchased at Hobby Lobby. (I bought them WAY before Easter....using my 40% off coupons.) They were NOT very expensive to begin with...I think they were around a $1.49 for 30. I just cut them off and glued them to 1/2 of a Styrofoam ball. (I made 100 of these markers....first, because I wanted the Kiddos to have a THEMED style marker for their Bingo Card....but, also because I am thinking of the lesson on the LOST SHEEP.---I would need 100 of them for that story...so, I decided to make these to fill that future need.) Our EXPLORER JOURNAL Activity, which we will do NEXT Sunday...when we REVIEW the lesson...Is a HAND PRINT Sheep. This Sunday, I will have my helper trace the KIDDO'S hand on black construction paper...I will cut them out the following week...prior to BIBLE Class. During Class the Kiddos will color the back ground...glue on their hand print. Add Cotton to their hand print. Glue on an eye and a bow. We will help add the detail...mouth and feet!! I really like this idea....because, the Kiddos will ALWAYS know that their Little Hand Print made the body of their sheep!!! One EXTRA activity....I am going to encourage my Wednesday Night Co-Teacher to work with the Kiddos....I want them to be able to recite the 23 Psalm....So, as a way of encouraging the KIDDOS we will use the SHEEP PUPPETS (I bought them at the Dollar Tree...before Easter.) to RECITE the 23 Psalm. We have a puppet for each of the KIDDOS and a few extra for our Honored Guest....if we are blessed to have visitors this next week. Kiddos really like puppets....and I think this is a great way to encourage them to LEARN the 23 Psalm. I am excited about this next few weeks. I LOVE Psalms 23!!!! I am glad we will be covering this lesson on Sunday....You see we are in TORNADO Warning Mode here in Oklahoma.....Everyone is on edge this weekend....So, I am reciting this Psalm to myself and my KIDDOS. Praying GOD will give us peace and comfort through these storms. Blessings, Ronda

VERSES: Leviticus 11:1-47 MEMORY VERSE: Leviticus 11:3 "Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Luke. Write "Luke" on small slips of paper and hand out at the end of class. PRAYER: Thank God for all the food that we have to eat and that it is good for us. SPECIAL SONG: The Books Of The Old Testament, The Books Of The New Testament, and The Wise Man Built His House Upon The Rock (all three songs are found in Songs We Sing In Bible Class #3 on this blog). Or try this new song right off the press: GOD'S MENU From the creatures of the land, God gave Moses His command, Things they could and could not eat, Must chew the cud, With cloven feet. Do what's good and shun the bad, You'll be happy, never sad, Follow God and do not stray, He will lead you all the way. VISUAL AID: Pictures of all kinds of animals listed in our lesson today. LESSON POINTS: The book of Leviticus is filled with many rules for the children of Israel. There were rules on staying away from idols, on the disease of leprosy, on sacrifices, on marriage, and on food. The rules were for the Israelites' own good. God said the people were to be holy because He was holy. Talking about their food, the people lived in tents and traveled in the desert or wilderness and could not keep food for a long period of time like we can. We have refrigerators, ice chests, and freezers, but the children of Israel did not. There needed to be guidelines or rules concerning the type of food the people could eat or they would get sick and maybe die. God, being so wise and smart, told Moses to tell the people what was good to eat and what was not good to eat. God called the good things to eat "clean" and the bad things to eat were called "unclean." Moses told the people what God had told him about "clean" and "unclean" food. God said it was important to look at the animals' feet and to notice how the animals ate their food. This would be the way the people could tell what was "clean" or "unclean" food. If the animals had hooves that were divided or "cloven" AND the animals chewed their cud, they could be eaten. They had to do both of these things. A cow is a "clean" animal because its hooves are cloven or divided and a cow chews its cud, so the Israelites could eat a cow. Do you know what "chewing their cud" means? Let's all chew our pretend food like a cow would right now. (Chew your cud from side to side.) Moses began to list the animals that they could eat and not eat. Moses already said that they could eat anything that had cloven hooves and chewed its cud. But some of the things that God had said not to eat were camels (chews, but no cloven hoof), rabbits (chews, no cloven hooves), and pigs (cloven hooves, but doesn't chew its cud). Those animals were unclean to the Israelites. Moses then talks about the things that were in the water. God said that whatever had fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers were "clean." What did "clean" mean? That's right! The people could eat it! BUT...if it did NOT have fins or scales, then it was "unclean." What did "unclean" mean? That's right! They could NOT eat it! Next, Moses talked about the birds. Moses made a big list of the birds that the people could NOT eat. They could not eat the eagles, or vultures, or buzzards, or falcons, or owls, or night hawks, or hawks, or swans, or pelicans, or storks, or herons, or bats. God did not say why they could not eat them, only that they were commanded not to eat them. Then Moses talked about the creeping things. If the creeping thing had four feet and could leap, they were OK to eat. Even locusts and grasshoppers and beetles were clean. But all the other flying creeping things were unclean. God said that anything that walked on its four paws were unclean. Can you think of something that has four paws? Yes! Cats, tigers, lions, bears, dogs, and animals like that could not be eaten. They also could not eat weasels, mice, tortoises, ferrets, lizards, snails, and moles. God also listed may rules about not touching anything that was dead or things that came in contact with dead things. Do we know why? The Bible does not say, but things that are dead usually have diseases and sicknesses. If the people touched them, then they might get the disease, too. God also told the people they could drink water if it was in a fountain or pit and the water was moving and there was plenty of it. We obey this rule even today. If there is a pool of water, maybe from the rain, we don't drink it because the longer it sits there, the greater the chance that bugs or sickness or disease might be in the pool. So we even can learn from these rules today, can't we? Remember how we have said that when God says something once, we had better listen, and when He says something twice, we had better REALLY listen? In our lesson today, God says TWO times that the children of Israel were holy because God was holy. He wanted His people pure and holy and helped them in any way He could. Making sure their food was good was one way God helped the people. "Older Student" Tips: Older students may find the lesson today very interesting. Many times, Bible teachers skip lesson like this, thinking that it might be too difficult for children to "sit through." A theme like this can bring out the intelligence of God, His wisdom, and His love for His people. God truly cares for His own. ACTIVITY: Clean Or Unclean? Materials needed: either white bond paper for the students to draw the animals (cows, oxen, sheep, goats, camels, pigs, rabbits, fish, eagle, owl, stork, etc.), or stickers, or free clip art found on the internet and copied before class time, 9" x 12" construction paper, crayons, scissors, glue. Hand out construction paper to each student. This is the background. Fold paper in half. Write "CLEAN" and "UNCLEAN" at the top of the construction paper. Hand out white bond paper to each student. This is paper for the animals. Draw animals listed above on the white paper. Cut out animals. *OR if you have chosen the clip art method, hand out the prepared papers now and cut out animals. (Animals cut out in squares instead of on the blackline is fine and faster.) *OR even easier, use the animal sticker method, but there must be both clean and unclean stickers available! Color animals. Glue animals to the "Clean" or "Unclean" side. Write "Leviticus 11:1-47" somewhere on the paper. Check all papers before they leave the classroom.

VERSES: Numbers 13:1-14: MEMORY VERSE: Numbers 13:23 "And they...cut down...a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review the first four books of the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. PRAYER: May we trust the LORD enough to let Him take care of us in His own time. SPECIAL SONG: The Twelve Sons Of Jacob (see April - Lesson - The Twelve Sons Of Jacob on this blog). VISUAL AID: Overhead Projector (for instructions, see March - Visual Aid #4). Draw a cluster of grapes on a branch, large enough for two men to carry on a pole (Num. 12:23). Extra visual aid: Bring in a cluster of grapes to eat, showing how small our grapes are compared to the ones found in the Promised Land. LESSON POINTS: THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL HAVE ARRIVED AT THE PROMISED LAND! God promised the children of Israel that He would take them to a land that flowed with milk and honey (Ex. 13:5) and God always remembers His promises. The people camped in the wilderness and God told Moses to tell the people, "Send men into the land of Canaan and spy out the land." God told them to pick one man from each tribe. Do we remember what a tribe is and who was the head of each tribe or family? If we can remember way back to Jacob and Joseph's time, how many sons did Jacob have? That's right! Twelve! Each one of Jacob's sons had a family and they were in charge of their family or sometimes they called a family a tribe. This is what God was talking about! He wanted one man from Reuben's family, one man from Simeon's family, and on down the line to one man in Benjamin's family. Levi's family did not need to go because they were priests, but Joseph--remember Joseph?--had two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, and they each had families, so in the end twelve men were chosen to spy out the land. The spies' job was to see what was in this new land that had been promised to them, to take a look at the people who lived there, to see if the people were strong or weak, to see if there were many people or just a few. Another job was to look at the land to see if it was a good land with lots of crops, to see if there was wood in the land, and they were to bring something back that grew there. Moses told them to be courageous and go check it out, so they went. They climbed up into the mountains and came to a place called Hebron. There was a brook there, and that was where the twelve spies saw an unusual sight! They saw very, very, very big grapes hanging on the vines because it was the grape season when they spied out the land. The grapes they saw were larger than any they had EVER seen before! They were HUGE! So they cut down a branch as big as this one (motion to the grapes that you have drawn--see Visual Aid above) and not one, but TWO men had to carry it back to the camp on a pole or a staff between them. They also brought back pomegranates and figs. Can you imagine how they felt? Here they had been traveling in the desert and these are the first fruits they have had in a long time! Finally after forty days, the men returned to the camp. FORTY DAYS?! We can remember that! How long did it rain during the flood? Forty days and forty nights! How long was Moses up in the mountain with the two tablets? Forty days! How long were the spies in the land of Canaan? Forty days! When the twelve men came back to the camp, they stood before Moses and Aaron and all the people and told them what they had seen and showed them the fruit of the land. This is the report they gave: "We have seen the land and it surely does flow with milk and honey. Here we show you the fruit of this new land. BUT...we have seen the people and their cities. Their cities have walls all around them and the people there are as tall as giants!!" We know the people were a little afraid when they heard this news because there was a good man named Caleb there with the other eleven men, and the Bible says that "Caleb stilled the people" or he calmed them down. Caleb said to Moses and all the people, "Let us go right now and possess it for we are well able to overcome it." But the men that were with Caleb, all except Joshua, said, "Oh, no! The people there are stronger than we are and we are not able to fight them. We are like grasshoppers compared to them." Next time, we will see what happens. Will they go in and fight for the land...or will they be afraid? "Older Student" Tips: Study a little about the city of Hebron. It is interesting that we now know of three different occasions where the number forty is used. What do we remember about Joshua? He held up Moses' hands when they were fighting the Amalekites. Joshua went up the mountain a little ways with Moses. Now, we have learned he is one of the spies! These seriously fun Bible memory verse games will help your kids memorize Bible verses in a way that is active and engaging!
Sometimes it can be tricky to come up with interesting ways to teach and recap on memory verses we want the children to learn. Here's an idea we will be using this Sunday as we revisit a memory verse about worship! Step 1: Write out your memory verse in a grid (as far as possible!). You may need to split the Bible reference into several different squares or group words together so that it fits into the number of spaces you have. Give the children some time to memorize where the words are! Step 2: Cover each word with some post it notes (I needed 3 layers for each space so the words didn't show through). Step 3: Split the children into two teams and give each team a different colour pen. Get teams to take turns in choosing a space and saying which word should be under the post it. If they are correct, they can circle the word in their team colour. They can discuss answers in their team but a different person must speak each time. Step 4: The first team with three words in a row is the winner!
1. Story: Tell the story of Zacchaeus meeting Jesus (based on Luke 19:1-10) 2. Lesson a. INTRO: Last week, we heard how Jesus met and healed someone on the road to Jericho. Who can remember who it was? Bartimaeus the blind beggar. Today, we will learn about how Jesus met another person in Jericho. He wasn’t blind. He wasn’t poor. In fact, he was very rich. But he wasn’t well liked and he was short. His name was Zacchaeus, and he was a chief tax collector. We’ve learned last time who a tax collector is —Tax collectors were Jews who helped the Roman government to collect taxes from their own people. Jews hated the Romans. So they also hated the tax collectors who worked for the Roman government. The tax collectors also often collected extra money for themselves. So if they were supposed to collect 100 dollars, they would collect 150 dollars instead and keep 50 dollars for themselves. So Zacchaeus was not popular among the Jews because they saw him as a traitor and a cheat. And for all the money he had, he felt that there was something missing in his life. He wasn’t a happy man. One day, he heard that Jesus was passing through. He must have heard good things about Jesus. He knew that Jesus was friends with many tax collectors. There was something different about Him — He was not like all the other teachers of the law or Pharisees. If only he could just see Him … But Zacchaeus was too short to see over the crowd. So he ran ahead, and he climbed a sycamore tree, to catch a glimpse of Jesus. b. JESUS CALLS: When Jesus reached the spot: He looked up and saw Zacchaeus — He had come for him He called him by name — He knew him already! He invited Himself to Zacchaeus’ house c. JESUS TRANSFORMS: What’s the result of Zacchaeus warmly welcoming Jesus into his house? What effect did it have on him? Zacchaeus stood up and told Jesus, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Last time we learnt about the rich young ruler who thought he could earn eternal life by obeying all the laws himself — when Jesus told him that his wealth was his idol, he could not accept it and went away sadly. But for Zacchaeus, a tax collector who knew how unrighteous he was — he knew there was no way he could earn salvation on his own. But when Jesus came into his house and touched his heart, he was transformed. He could give up his money willingly and generously. d. JESUS SAVES: The people around were not so happy. “Jesus has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” They thought that Zacchaeus was not worthy to have Jesus in his house and wondered why Jesus would “waste” His time with a sinner. Jesus told them, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Jesus came to save the lost. Those who thought they were good enough didn’t want to be saved, so He came to those who knew they were not good enough. And because Zacchaeus received Jesus into his house and heart, he was saved and had eternal life. e. JESUS DOES THE SAME TODAY Today Jesus also does the same: He looks for us — while we were lost sinners He calls us by name — He knows us before we were born He invites Himself to our hearts We can all be like Zacchaeus and welcome Jesus happily. And we can let Jesus transform our lives and give us eternal life in Him! Memory verse: Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. 4. Activity Suggestion Craft with memory verse Song: Zacchaeus was a wee little man Worksheets: Crossword puzzles Get kids into groups and share: Jesus looked for them and calls them by name. VERSES: Numbers 17:1-13 MEMORY VERSE: Numbers 17:10 "...Bring Aaron's rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review the first six books of the New Testament. encourage all of the students to learn the books because these first six books are a good foundation on which to build the other twenty-one books. PRAYER: Thank God for everything that He gives us and let us always appreciate and never complain. SPECIAL SONG: This Little Light Of Mine (see March - Songs We sing In Bible Class #3 on this blog.) VISUAL AID: Aaron's Rod (see Activity below) LESSON POINTS: God spoke to Moses and He said to tell the people to bring one rod from each tribe, so that there would be a total of twelve rods collected. One rod for every tribe. Every man's rod would have the head of the tribe's name written on it. God told Moses to write Aaron's name on his rod for the tribe of Levi. God told Moses to take all of the rods and lay them in the tabernacle. God said He would choose one man's rod and it would blossom. God said that this should end all of the complaining that the children of Israel were doing. Moses told all the people what God had said and everyone of the tribes gave one man's rod with their name on it. Moses laid all the rod's in the tabernacle. The next day, Moses went into the tabernacle and guess what?? Aaron's rod had buds and blossoms on it! It even had almonds on it! Moses brought out all the rods of the tribes and every man took his rod. God told Moses to take Aaron's rod back into the tabernacle and it would be kept as token or a sign against the rebels to stop complaining against God or they would die. So the purpose of Aaron's rod budding was a sign to all the people that should stop doing as the rebels like Korah had done and to stop complaining against Him. ACTIVITY: Aaron's rod Materials needed: 12" x 18" brown construction paper, scraps of green and white construction paper, almonds, glue, scissors, marker, tape. (Hot glue works well with almonds.) Hand out brown paper to students. Roll and twist paper diagonally and form it into a rod or staff. Secure with tape. Cut out green leaves. Cut out little white flowers. Glue leaves on flowers on the top end of the rod. Glue almonds securely. Write "Aaron's Rod" and "Numbers 17."
