Translation - Uncle, are you asleep? Many a time I have seen squirrels in and around owl habitats. Fig trees, abandoned quarries etc... And most of the times they seem curious than intimidated. Maybe because day time is not really the time when the owls are hungry?
If you think that all squirrels do all day is bury nuts, think again. Squirrels are far more complex creatures. They enjoy painting, playing Jenga, as well as sniffing flowers, or sipping hot tea with a nice view.
The Malabar Giant squirrel sports a colourful patchwork of fur, with colours ranging from beige and tan to shades of brown and rust. They can leap an incredible 20 feet between trees.
Beatrix Potter teaches her young audience a few important (and humorous) lessons with her Autumn tales. First she issues a warning through the example of Squirrel Nutkin (c. 1903). While the squirrel clan harvests nuts into their storehouses, Squirrel Nutkin teases and mocks Old Mr. Brown, the owl, with foolish riddles. We soon find that Nutkin can disrespect his elder only so much before Mr. Brown bites off his tail. Then we come to Timmy Tiptoes (c. 1911). Here Timmy Tiptoes' wife Goody Tiptoes (I'm especially fond of this squirrel illustration) prepares her home for the winter. Timmy and Goody work hard and fast to store nuts for their hibernation. Unfortunately, some other squirrels jump to conclusions, suspecting Timmy of stealing nuts. And they punish Timmy by dropping him into a hollowed tree, unknowingly onto his own storehouse. While Goody searches for Timmy, Timmy gorges himself on nuts, so much so that he cannot escape through the hole once Goody finds him. Eventually circumstances right themselves, and Timmy and Goody reunite. Last, but certainly not least, we have The Tale of Ginger and Pickles (c. 1909). This story may be enjoyed by the parents more than the children, for it holds a timely commentary on our present economic atmosphere. For you see: Ginger and Pickles gave unlimited credit. Now the meaning of "credit" is this -- when a customer buys a bar of soap, instead of the customer pulling out a purse and paying for it -- she says she will pay another time. (19) Yes, friends, this synopisis' irony will be lost on the little ones. We know the outcome of the story because we're living it. But to hear it so succinctly expressed by the prophetess Beatrix Potter deserves a second glance. If we had but heeded her warning! Perhaps reading this little volume to the ones under our care will help prevent similar outcomes in their future.
Bosco the Yarn Sloth is an original pattern for crochet made by Kati Brown. She fell in love with the Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth while visiting the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth is larger than the Three-Toed sloth and does not have the familiar "mask" around the eyes.
Squirrel with an itch. I was all set-up to try and photograph the cresties when this guy came into frame, never look a gift horse in the mouth as they say.
I have a few girlfriends who asked me for a playdate- my kids have them, why can't I? Just casual, bring stuff to play with -sort of thing. It was so much fun. Margery brought over a make and take of this dog card- above using the Owl punch for the face and large oval for the body- is he not the cutest? The right side is the close up of the face and if the dog is sick, the variation on the right. Does he not look absolutely ill? These are the incredibly creative ladies at work, Makani to the left, Margery, and Sachi- who made this most yummy salad that even my KIDS ate it! Bonnie, Makani and Sheryl made the trek over a big hill to come play. Bonnie is holding the make and take I made- a little notebook holder- I will post details on that later. We had been playing with the idea of the owl punch being used as a face of Rudolf in the December workshop and Margery was playing with it and made a squirrel face so I went NUTS- and had to make the whole squirrel with it (hee hee). Here is the detail on the squirrel, holding the nut from the Day of Gratitude set. The background is Woodgrain in Soft Suede. Ribbon is pumpkin and DSP is from Margery. I was at the Used stamp sale at Cranberry hill last year and I bought this ziplock bag full of cut up paper from Marsha- I bought it because it had some flocked paper and I thought I would it use it -some day- and the day had come at last- I punched out the owl body and the large oval for the body, black and white CS for the eyes, pretty in pink for the nose- heart is form M*chaels- $1 punch- used a black marker for the facial expression. The hand is from the Boho blossoms punch that I free form cut from the small flower leaving just the 3 scallops. I tried to figure out how the tail should be after I made the body by drawing it on a scrap paper and used it as a template to make a tail- I had my kids decorativve scissors near by so I grabbed it to make the scallop part. The sentiment is from PTI- My Punny Valentine set. The scallop and oval is made using Nestab*lities. I love how the exchange of ideas took the little dog into this squirrel. Each of us kept egging each other on, adding the background, the tail, the nut, looking for the perfect sentiment all came out of us just being together and talking. This is Margery's version with the curly tail. I love you girls! Lynda

Did you know that C.S Lewis loved Beatrix Potter’s books when he was a young child? In Surprised By Joy he described an early stab of joy after reading Squirrel Nutkin. Through a hole in the book’s cover, an owl invites you inside to meet a majestic tree and all its forest inhabitants during the changing seasons. With clever die-cuts throughout, each sturdy page reveals a new set of animals playing and living in the tree—baby bears frolicking in the spring, bees buzzing around apples in the summer, squirrels storing nuts in the fall, and finally the lone owl keeping warm during the winter chill, until another year begins…. Children will love seeing a new set of animals appear as each page is turned, and along the way they’ll learn about the seasons and how a forest and its inhabitants change throughout the year.
