I've always wanted to surprise my kids with a trip. It always looks like a ton of fun when I've seen other parents do it.
So I have to say.... there is only 1 week till spring break for us!! HALLELUJAH!! I can't not wait! As you might know as I posted about it a few months ago, my husband and I are expecting our first baby May 3rd and can I just say being pregnant the entire school year is extremely exhausting so I am SO looking forward to a week off. I am so lucky to have the entire summer with my sweet girl, but WHEW, call me tired! Anywhoooo, this past week we have learning about EE and EA. Not sure if anyone else does this, but looking into the weeks ahead my first step is to search pinterest for activities for my kiddos that will match the upcoming skills. After searching pinterest for EE and EA I found these cute little sheep in a jeep. I have had the poem for a while and I knew about the series of books, but never thought off making these nifty sheeps for them to record their EE words on! I am not sure who is the creator of this idea or I would link back to them. Please note that I did not create this poem. I have the original activity that I found pinned under my "firsties are the besties" pin board. After reading the poem and finding the EE words and brainstorming our own EE words they made shEEp to record their words on. After our Sheep in a Jeep we made "Leafy Trees". This was another activity to help reinforce EE and EA. The kiddos traced their hand and forearm on brown construction paper and wrote EE words on the tree trunk, then used the leaf template and wrote EA words on the leaf. Here is the Leafy Tree template if you would like to use it. On presidents day {sorry a little late} we read a few George Washington books and discussed some presidential facts. My sweet ones made these adorable George Washingtons and then recorded several facts they learned about him. They turned out cute AND they learned alot... I call that sucess! I can't wait for tomorrow!! Not only is it Friday, but it is Dr. Seuss' birthday AND the Loraz comes to theatres!! My kiddos are so pumped! TGI {almost} Friday! Oh and 1 week till spring break!

I can't believe this school year is almost over! I have only 5 days of school left, Friday is our last day. I will miss my kiddos dearly but am super excited to start my summer vacation. Next school year will bring so many changes for me~~new partner teacher (SUPER excited!!), best friend coming back to teach at my school (YAHOO!!), my baby girl is starting 8th grade at another school (BOO HOO!), and 3rd grade will switch classes next year (SCARED!!)!! I will need the summer to get ready for my 27+ new students next year. I love planning over the summer and will need this summer to prepare for switching classes. Switching won't be so bad, I will teach religion to 2 classes. I am really happy about not teaching science and social studies too!! I always have a hard time fitting these 2 subjects in on a daily basis. My students have been really busy these last 2 weeks doing my favorite all-time writing assignment~~~My Favorite Summer Vacation! I even had my honey helping me (He was so cute going from store to store!)! I had the hardest time finding Lifesavers (Who would believe that?!). Hi guys! How was your first week back from spring break? I have lots of freebies to share with you in my Five for Friday recap this week! 1. #SPRINGBREAKGOALS I am totally a write it down, check it off = productivity kind of person. So when March break rolled around I knew I had to make up some goals and a daily scheduling papers to keep me on track. I shared these originally on Instagram when I first made them but wanted to share them here too, since you can use them at anytime of the year! The goal setting sheet is completely editable so you can use it to fit your needs! I made a new one on the last day of March break and put #MARCHGOALS at the top and re-planned for the rest of March! Click here or on the image below to download the editable goal setting sheet and the daily schedule sheet for free: 2. MARCH BREAK WRITING Again, sorry I'm sharing this so late! I made these for the first day back so the students could draw and write about what they did over March break. They loved this and so many students wanted to write about what they did over March break! NEW PATTERNING MATS My group needs lots of practice with patterning this year! I have a core group who gets it and then lots who don't quite understand the concept yet. So I try to have lots of patterning activities that I switch out every so that the centre is inviting for the students to visit. This week we put out different sized gemstones and this patterning mat out. The students were invited to make colour or size patterns. This side is a little easier and the back side has more complicated patterns. I told them the back side was a "challenge" and my high achievers flocked there! "Challenge" seems to be the magic word for my high achiever this year! I just added these to my patterning unit on TPT. Click here or on the image below if you are interested in checking them out! 4. READ & ANSWER This week our sight word was "yes" so after learning the sight word I set out this "Read & Answer" sheet at the writing centre for the kids to do. I purposely picked these animals because they appear in the level 1-7 books in our PM Benchmark books. I love these because most students can complete it independently and it requires them to think because they have to answer each question based on their own personal preference. STRAWBERRY ALLERGY POSTER + LETTER I had a new kiddo start this week with a strawberry allergy. They are not as common as nut allergies and I couldn't find any posters or letters already pre-made that I liked so I made my own. March Madness has something to do with basketball, right?? It makes me think of the countdown till spring break and how quickly the days pass after it. I told someone today that being in my class was like heaven on earth. They are so wonderful, I can't even think about June when they will leave me for grander horizons. I need it all to slow down! Saw this wonderful idea on Pinterest and knew I had to use it: I couldn't find the original person that uploaded it but kudos to whoever you are :) Mine is a bit simple but you could print it on colored paper. Get yours below :) Writing Goals, Conventions Writing Goals, Traits Trait Posters by:Edina Public Schools Writing Trait Posters I've been working on a guided reading instruction pack. It came about when I was trying to share it all with my intern. It's hard model and talk about all the ins and outs. We all know that it is overwhelming to begin and follow through with! The pack I created has a checklist of materials needed, helpful hints about grouping students, a chart to schedule time for each group, running record forms, ways to analyze a running record, daily note page for each group, record log for individuals, and a format to follow when working with students. It's far from perfect but a quick and dirty overview to get started. Guided Reading pack Here are pictures from my classroom that explain my set up: These are my guided reading books. All the copies are in one bag and filed under their level. You will notice I wrote various levels on the books because it seems that everything differs. My school uses the Guided Reading levels develop by Fountas and Pinnell. The baskets are leveled. Each level has around six different text selections. The books have the level listed on the back. This set is PM Rigby. In case your school doesn't have the funds for a different series of guided reading books you can always level your readers that go along with your basal. Most of the time they aren't used in a leveled order, they are based of comprehension or phonics strategies. Leveling them helps your readers because it puts just right books in their hands. Here is my binder: I have a schedule in the front and a list of needs for each group. Currently I am working with 2 groups a day and my intern is working with 1 a day. So you may notice I only have 3 groups listed, she is in charge of the other 2 groups;) This is my note taking page. It defintely helps with planning effective lessons. Goals for the following week based of noticings. Leveling guide in front pocket developed for our school's needs. Running Record cues in the back pocket. Bins for each group with books to reread and new reads, writing journal for each child and a couple other things based off the needs of the group {2 bins are stashed behind}. Whiteboards, fluency rubric, easy button and bell for clean up warning. Back of easel that is used for word work. Large book covers make great seat sacks for whisper phones because each kid is reading at their own pace. Running records organized by level. What the individual bags look like...several copies of the running record and one book. Returning from Spring Break can be the BEST time to add a spark to your classroom routines! What's more...it is also the perfect time to try out some techniques and routines that you might have been a little nervous to try! Who better to try them out with than with the students you have already established a trusting environment! These are my top tips that you should try with your students! If you aren't already using Class Dojo with your students, after Spring Break is the perfect time to start. Focus as a classroom on the behaviors you want to see most often, add them to your Positive Behavior list, and start catching your students in the act. A two-to-three month commitment late in the school year is the perfect time to try out this interactive app. Set a weekly goal of positive behaviors and reward your class with extra recess, Stinky Feet day, or a simple snack & short video on Friday Choose the Random Pick option to watch a "Secret Friend" in the hallway to add to the class total. My students always clap for the Secret Friend and thank them! Class Dojo too much of a commitment for you? No worries! One of my favorite ways to quietly recognize on-task behavior, good choices, or ANY act of "Awesomeness" are giving my kids tiny tokens while I'm teaching. Trust me, kids NOTICE when you pull out these goodies and just lay them on desks and give a silent pat on the back. Be super-generous and watch how contagious positive behavior spreads throughout your room! I use a variety of things I have collected like: Read Tara at 4th Grade Frolic's post about using Smuddles. Dollar Spot erasers from Target Reward Phrases from Creative Teaching Press Your Guided Math and Reading groups are probably pretty established by now. Add a little pizzazz to the routine and try out some Flexible Seating options for one of your rotations. Who knows? You may decide you want to do more in the fall when school starts!! Scoop rockers make a great option to get out of desks to do some reading or independent work in a quiet location in the room. As a 3rd grade teacher, I've never had centers in a specific "place" in the room, so this leaves the extra room available perfect for some choices on the floor. I found mine at Walmart, but I have been told you can find them at Aldi's as well! Standing Work Zone: Raise the legs of an unused table or a collection of desks in the building to create a place to plop center games and word work. Let your "standers" have a spot to work, wiggle, and lean to their heart's content during one of your rotations! When Spring Fever hits, why fight the battle when you can channel the energy productively! If GoNoodle didn't save your sanity this winter with its Inside Recess options, then you need to head over to check out the movement activities that range from the ever-calming Maximo to the goofy Koo Koo Kanga boys! Create your own list of favorites and let your kids do the choosing. Start one of these during your transition times and just WATCH you kiddoes clean up and join in no NO TIME! One my of kids' favorite activities to spend 5-10minutes is simply having the chance to get our markers, colored pencils, or crayons and draw. I have a collection of great ideas on my Pinterest Board that are Low (to zero) Prep and High Interest! You can see it HERE. These are perfect activities to follow up a round of standardized testing, too! Very stress relieving! Find a You Tube Channel will calming classical music. You might like THIS one! Guide a directed drawing, demonstrate a doodling technique, or simply give them a Squiggle that you start for them. Enjoy the last few weeks with your precious friends!
