In my three years of teaching I'm yet to have a sick day (now that I've written that I will probably be bound to my bed with some sort of ailment tomorrow or next week during Spring Break). Sure, I've had subs, but conveniently for me I've always been able to plan out lessons in advance. As all teachers know--SUB PLANS WILL BE THE DEATH OF YOU. When I start to write them I always ask myself, "Do I really have to be gone, this is just too much work!" And then I have to think about "will my sub actually be an 'art' person?" Not knowing this I don't always want to continue on with our projects because you know...I don't want them to be destroyed! Ye of little faith, I suppose. Anywho, I try to simplify it as best I can for the sanity of the sub and myself. This lesson here was awesome. I was doing mono printing with 4th and 5th graders and no way was I about to continue that with a sub (my head hurts just thinking about it). The only resource they used was this handout to draw, otherwise the rest was up to them. My favorite resource to inspire sub lessons is Art for Kids Hub. The "how to" drawing instructions ROCK, plus the videos are pretty cool too. We all know how I feel about erasers and the drawing how to's don't even require erasing lines! What are some of your go to resources when planning for a sub?

First graders have been working on this painting the past few weeks. We are studying weather patterns and having fun learning new techniques with watercolor like blowing, dripping, and adding salt! Third grade is painting these fun jellyfish watercolor resists! I LOVE this Liquitex gloss Medium and Varnish!! It makes a great resist! We just painted this gloss medium right on the paper to create our jellies... We are using warm colors for the Jelly and cool colors+salt for the water I just LOVE the texture from the salt! One of the high school teachers in our district used the Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish to make these gorgeous multimedia watercolor resists for Dia De Los Muertos. They stamped the Gloss on the paper, drew their design, and painted over it. We are going to use this technique with our Sureal Self Portraits this year! Cannot WAIT!!
Fireflies are such fun bugs! I had never seen them until we moved to the East Coast and it really is magical to see them flying in the night sky. I bought some Glow in The Dark Paint and I've been wanting to try this for a Summer project. Here is what it looks like in the dark... I painted some of the dots and the bodies of the fireflies with glow in the dark paint. After you "charge" up the paint under a light it glows softly. You will need: Watercolor paint pencils Sharpies - black and silver Bamboo Skewers - (for the dots) White Acrylic paint Glow in the Dark Paint - I got mine at Target Start by drawing the jar with the fireflies in it. Pretty simple so any age can do it. I painted the lid first with some purple, red and blue watercolor paint mixed together. This is a great lesson for watercolor techniques. I surrounded each firefly with a circle of just water and then painted the jar blue around them. I added some black shading - especially under the lid, at the bottom and sides. Now let this dry a little so the blue won't totally bleed into the yellow. When the blue is just damp add a yellow wash over the fireflies and over the blue around them. I wanted the colors to bleed (wet into wet) together around the firefly to get the effect of the firefly being really bright and then fading outward. This photo also shows the sharpie on the head and body of the firefly after the yellow dries. Add some orange to the body of the firefly. I outlined the wings in metallic silver Sharpie and used a bamboo skewer dipped in paint to make the dots. The bigger dots are the fat end and the tiny ones are the pointy end. I did white paint and silver glitter paint first. Then I went over the white dots with the glow in the dark paint. The glow in the dark paint is pretty transparent so you need to do the white first. I also painted the bodies of the fireflies with glow paint. Do at least 2 coats, the more the better for the best glow. I think my students will enjoy looking at these before they go to sleep.

Well, in my 14 years at Zamo we never had rain to contend with during our Celebration of Art festivities... until last night, that is. I must say, that although unusual for San Diego in July, the rain did not dampen the spirit of the event at all:) Attendance was robust and their were tons of smiles to brighten any gloom that drops from the sky may have brought. Again, our incredible classroom teachers and staff were amazing while leading 10 different activities for our community to participate in. Our PTF rocked ticket and food sales. Our administration hung tough in the wet silent auction area. We were visited by our School Board President, the San Diego County VAPA Coordinator, and this morning our SDUSD Superintendent stopped by too. I am so proud of what our kids accomplish every year. It's so great to be able to share the creative work of our students with our school community and VAPA decision makers at the district level and beyond. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand in making the event another great evening of art making and art appreciation! We couldn't do it without you. our school musicians kicking off the evening. rain!
