De la prévention des blessures à une meilleure récupération, ils sont censés être un complément indispensable à l’activité physique. Or, de nombreuses études montrent que le stretching peut avoir, selon le sport pratiqué, un effet négatif sur la performance et la prévention des blessures. Autrement dit, les différentes techniques de stretching doivent permettre à un muscle de s’assouplir sans provoquer de lésions au niveau des articulations et de gagner ainsi en flexibilité. Les différentes techniques de stretching contribuent d’ailleurs réellement à augmenter la mobilité des athlètes et sont donc utiles pour des sports comme la gymnastique ou la danse. Le problème vient par contre du fait que la pratique a été généralisée à tous les sports, alors que justement, lorsque la vitesse ou la force sont en jeu, les étirements peuvent avoir un effet négatif sur la performance et la prévention des blessures. Pourquoi les étirements ne préviennent pas les blessures Contrairement aux nombreuses idées reçues, les étirements n’aident pas les athlètes à se protéger des blessures. Bien au contraire. A force d’étirer un muscle, on l’entraîne à acquérir une plus grande flexibilité. Résultat : le seuil de la douleur tolérée par le muscle augmente. Lorsque la personne commencera son activité, le risque de blessure sera élevé car le muscle sera habitué à dépasser son seuil de tolérance à la douleur. Et ce n’est pas tout. Un étirement impose à un muscle une tension maximale qui peut engendrer des microtraumatismes au niveau des fibres musculaires. Lors de l’effort, les parties du corps étirées peuvent s’avérer ainsi plus douloureuses. En outre, les muscles et ligaments possèdent des gardiens contre les étirements excessifs, appelés mécanorécepteurs. Ces derniers sont responsables de la proprioception, véritable réflexe protégeant nos articulations en cas de risques d’entorses ligamentaires. Ce réflexe proprioceptif est perturbé par le stretching pendant plus d’une heure. Un effet négatif sur la performance S’il ne l’aide pas à se prémunir des blessures, le stretching ne permet pas non plus au sportif d’augmenter ses performances. Le muscle étiré perd ainsi de sa force et cela dure pendant plus d’une heure. Un autre phénomène, appelé le creeping, pose aussi des problèmes de performances. Lors d’un étirement, les fibres musculaires, qui sont normalement en torsade, s’allongent provoquant une diminution de leur capacité d’absorption et donc de leur efficacité. Le phénomène est réversible, mais il faut attendre longtemps avant que le muscle se retrouve dans son état initial. Ces deux phénomènes rendent le stretching inutile voir contre-productif avant un effort qui nécessite de la force ou de la vitesse. Le saut est le sport qui pâtit le plus des étirements: il a en effet été montré qu’on sautait en moyenne 4% moins haut en s’étirant avant de pratiquer un exercice où la détente est en jeu. Pas de diminution des courbatures après l’effort Autre idée largement répandue, les étirements seraient censés améliorer la récupération après un effort. Pour cela, il faudrait que le stretching favorise la circulation sanguine pour éliminer les déchets, prévienne les courbatures ou entraîne un relâchement du muscle. Or, pratiqués directement après l’effort, les étirements ne provoquent pas ce genre de réactions. L’étirement provoque une compression des vaisseaux sanguins et ne favorise donc pas la circulation, contrairement à ce qu’on l’on devrait avoir pour assurer une meilleure récupération des fibres musculaires lésées lors de l’effort. On constate d’autre part une augmentation de la myolyse, soit une dégradation du muscle et une diminution de la force musculaire: le stretching n’aide donc pas à combattre les courbatures. Enfin, pratiqués juste après l’effort, les étirements ajoutent une tension musculaire supplémentaire qui risque de favoriser les microtraumatismes à l’intérieur du muscle. Contrairement aux idées reçues, le stretching n’est donc utile que pour augmenter la souplesse. S’il peut permettre une meilleure relaxation après l’effort lorsqu’il est pratiqué longtemps après l’exercice (six heures sont recommandées), il ne semble pas utile avant et directement après un sport qui nécessite force, vitesse ou détente.
