How Religious & Spiritual Beliefs Can Be Used To Groom Us To Tolerate (Or Perpetrate) Abuse
What if instead of an obstacle, sex was a pathway toward a spiritual life? Those of us who have been raised with religious backgrounds have often been taught that sexuality and spirituality are opposing forces, that you cannot be virtuous if you have sex because sex is a 'sin' or is 'unspiritual.' Prior to dogmatic ideologies, sexuality was respected for thousands of years as a sacred expression of nature's life force and the mystery of creation. Although I've written about the value of sexual transmutation, or sexual abstinence in the past, I want to make it very clear in this article that

Spirituality refers to a belief beyond religion that one may practice to reach their higher existence.
To set things straight, I'm not in either the “religion is evil” or “spirituality is nonsense” groups. I’m that weird outlier who’s hanging out on the outskirts holding up a sign that says “BOTH are good and BOTH are bad folks.” As someone who was raised in a fundamentalist Christian faith (and kissed that goodbye years ago!), and has been on the spiritual-but-not-religious path for over a decade, I find myself in the middle. I often straddle the line between religiosity and spirituality knowing that each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Sure, I can understand why people either hate

Religious pluralism is basically accepting that all religions are equal, valid, and ultimately lead to God. It is the coexistence of various religions under the same roof, and celebrating the presence of other religions without losing one's own identity. This SpiritualRay post explains this concept further with the help of some examples.
Belief systems are inherited and taught directly or indirectly from childhood. We were taught what to believe and who and what we are supposed to be. We were drilled either by talks or by experiences that impressed on the youthful soul to think a certain way, to act a certain way.
We are free to even laugh and even enjoy religious humour because people who are secure in their faith understand their Father in heaven chuckles along with them. ( Melanie’s Theology 101)

Spiritual bypassing is a very persistent shadow of spirituality, manifesting in many forms, often without being acknowledged. – R. Augustus What comes to mind when you think of ‘spirituality’? You might picture beautiful temples, ethereal instruments, golden Buddhas, gardens and forests of paradise, the faces of enlightened masters, angels, mountain ranges, sunsets, or any number of other dazzling images. We tend to associate spiritual awakening with transcendental and heightened states of being that are invariably associated with feelings of happiness, joy, deep inner peace, and contentment. While all of this is true and wonderful, many of us become intoxicated, distracted,

By Jeeheon Cho from Surat Thani, Thailand - Varanasi River BankUploaded by Ekabhishek, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10681661 Here is a fascinating and touching story about Varanasi, the most sacred place for devout Hindus. One of the things that makes it so sacred is that it is a destination for many dying Hindus who believe that they can only reach moksha, or freedom from the cycle of rebirth, by taking God's name and dying in the holy city. Moni Basu, a practicing Hindu and a reporter for CNN, follows an 80 year old Hindu who wants to take his last breath in the city of Varanasi. That city is what Basu calls the "epicenter" of Hinduism. It is to Hindus what Mecca is to Muslims and what Jerusalem is to Christians. But unlike those cities, Varanasi is a destination for many dying Hindus. Basu explains why dying in Varanasi is so important. And she introduces us to Mukti Bhavan, a "liberation" house where some Hindus spend their eleventh hour. Basu calls it "Hotel Death." There, she tells us, she saw death in a "new light." The house lacked warmth, love, or "any other emotions we linked to the process of dying." But later in the story, we see the house through the eyes of its manager, Bhairavnath Shukla. For him, death is not to be mourned. In fact, he sees it as mukti, or liberation. According to Basu "he and everyone else at Mukti Bhavan see death in Varanasi as a marriage of one's soul with God?" Basu's story helps us to understand Hindu spirituality and the significance of Varanasi in sustaining it. Does the Hindu view of the afterlife differ from other religions. Basu included a chart of those views which you can see below.
