Here's how to make an I-Spy version of the Disappearing Nine-Patch. It's SO EASY, but it looks like you spent FOREVER on it! I am assuming throughout this tutorial that you are familiar with the Disappearing Nine-Patch pattern -- I have previously posted specific step-by-step instructions on that quilt pattern, which you can find here. What you need: ~ 88 - 4" I-Spy squares (From time to time I host swaps where you can join in and trade with others to collect these!) ~ 1 1/8 yd fabric for sashing (mine is white) ~ 1/3 yd fabric for setting squares (mine is blue) ~ 1 7/8 yd fabric for backing ~ 3/8 yd fabric for binding ~ crib size (45"x60") batting What to cut: From sashing fabric: ~ 88 - 4" white squares ~ 17 - 2"x4" white rectangles From setting square fabric: ~ 22 - 4" squares ~ 20 - 2" squares From binding fabric: ~ 5 - 2 1/2" strips -- sew end-to-end to create one long strip Finished Quilt Size: 41 1/2" x 56 1/2" (nearly crib size) Here is the KEY to setting up your blocks -- the lower right corner's I-Spy always needs to face the same direction no matter which way you turn the block. I made my lower right corner's I-Spy always right side up. STEP ONE: Sew together the center rows on all your blocks. Start by sewing a white square to every blue square. Then sew another white square to the opposite side of every blue square -- creating 22 rows of white-blue-white. STEP TWO: Place your stack of I-Spy squares right side up (with the bottom edge of the I-Spies closest to you) to the right of your stack of white squares. Fold one I-Spy over one white square like shutting a book, and sew the right side seam with a 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat until you run out of white squares. STEP THREE: Open all your sewn squares and stack them with the I-Spy square on the left. Place your I-Spy squares to the right, with the top edge of the I-Spies lined up to the edge of the white square, as shown in the photo. STEP FOUR: Take the top I-Spy square from the right hand pile and fold it like closing a book over the left hand pile. Sew the right side seam with a 1/4" seam allowance. STEP FIVE: Press your rows! Press the seam allowances toward the darker fabrics (toward your setting square fabrics and toward your I-Spies). STEP SIX: Set up your rows as shown. CAREFUL -- It DOES matter which way those rows are set up! Close one I-Spy row over one setting square row like shutting a book. Sew right seam with 1/4" seam allowance, matching seams on the rows. STEP SEVEN: Set up your rows as shown -- again, be CAREFUL! It matters which way those rows face! Close right side I-Spy row over the left side like shutting a book. Sew right seam with 1/4" seam allowance, matching seams on the rows. STEP EIGHT: Press seam allowances to one side. (I pressed mine towards the I-Spies.) STEP NINE: Cut your nine-patches into quarters as shown, measuring and cutting carefully. Your sashing and setting squares are DONE -- with the exception of the bottom row of your quilt and the right side vertical row of your quilt -- which you will piece together using your white rectangles and 2" squares. You're ready to lay out your squares and sew them together!! Wasn't that EASY?? (I never could decide whether I would have preferred an additional border on this quilt -- but it would be simple to adapt the pattern to allow for it!)

Free Printable I Spy Animal Activity for a party game, rainy day activity, or just a fun coloring page for the kids. Perfect for a classroom activity page.
Finished this I Spy quilt last night. I just did a simple stitch in the ditch with a fun squiggle down the sashing. I have 2 bolts of this yummy dark chocolate minky... ...and since it is for a little boy, I cut a piece for the backing. I explored my thread colors and finally came up with this So Fine thread called "Sagebrush"t hat really blended with all the colors. I used it top and back, because it never shows your color on minky anyway.

I Spy with my little eye...... A chicken, a cow, a goldfish. Cakes. Mmmmm. A dog, a bone, paw prints. A cat, a penguin, a bird house. A boy. Almost there with the quilting. Just the borders to do now. All these things came from my stash. Surprising what is in there when you dig deep. I have had great fun finding fabrics to use and Maisie has tested it out by finding her own things. She spotted a owl and a bike and a baa. She identifies animals mostly by the noise they make although a cow is a dow. It amuses me listening to her testing words out. Holding her hand up and say "a hand " and then holding the other one up and repeating it as though she is surprised to find another one. Anyone interested in a kitchen update? Yes? Oh yes! It has been worth all the mess and upheaval and it is fabulous. A very glamorous kitchen No, it is not a tv but a rather good extractor fan. For those who like details. Walls painted in Slaked Lime, units painted in Slaked Lime Mid and the dresser is in Slaked Lime Deep all by Little Greene paint. The worktop is Ivory Fantasy granite. Just waiting for the window blind now. Order is being restored throughout the house. Phew! I love it. Back to the stitching. Happy Stitching. Shirley.

This last week I was sewing quilt bindings like crazy. We were able to get a bunch of quilts done for Seattle Children's hospital at the little quilt party some ladies from church organized, but they needed bindings sewn on. I always dread the finishing work involved with sewing bindings, but sewing all these reminded me they're really not that bad. Anyway, here are some pictures of the I-Spy quilts. I'll post some pictures of the other quilts tomorrow. Karen from Katie's Comforter's Guild was kind enough to send me two boxes of fabric a couple months ago to make quilts from. So we used some of the less exciting fabrics, like this super soft plaid flannel for the back. It's nice and cozy and the calmer print is a nice contrast to the busy front. There are four finished ones total that we sent off to the hospital with my neighbor yesterday when she took her son over for some testing. (Funny how a deadline can get things done...I have to other I-Spy quilts I started a lot earlier, but they aren't done since they weren't destined for the hospital.) The kids just couldn't stay away from the quilts while I was photographing them. But I was already planning on washing all the quilts before sending them over to the hospital. We've just had too many sniffles in the house over the last month and I didn't want to risk any fragile kiddos getting sick from the quilts. It's funny how these I-Spy Quilts all look more or less the same...and get when you look at them up close each quilt is different and so fun to look at. It was also interesting to see how the different colored yarn give each quilt a different flavor. My favorite way to finish quilts is by machine quilting, but since we were working on these in a work party and some ladies were more comfortable with tying, we went with the ties. I'm excited to see what all the fabrics that come in with our current I-Spy Swap. (The current swap filled up super quickly, but if you're interested in participating in a future swap, you can go here and leave a comment with your email address and I'll notify you when we do another swap...most likely in May or June.)
