The Italian Futurists were prepared to overturn the world as they knew it to achieve their ideal world. A new exhibit looks at the intense rise and fall of the art movement.
Tullio Crali (1910-2000) was a pilot and self-taught painter who took up Futurism at a late date for it (1929) but at a comparatively young age for himself. Given his enthusiasm for aviation, he was part of the Aeropittua sub-field of Futurism. Even though Futurism in general faded before its founder Marinetti died, Crali carried on with the project till the end of his very long life. I suppose most critics nowadays would recoil at the bellicosity of some of Crali's paintings, but when they were painted they fit well with the temperament of Mussolini's Fascist Italy. Being late to Futurism, Crali didn't get very hung up on the fussy, Cubist-like finely-chopped subjects depicted by earlier practitioners. Instead, his paintings tended to be simpler, more poster-like. I wouldn't call Crali's paintings great, but I do find them oddly likable thanks to their bold design and sense of action. In decollo (Takeoff) - 1932 Bombardamento di una fabrica (Bombing a Factory) - 1938 This bombardment seems more sinister and businesslike than in the 1931 painting above. Prima che s'apra il paracadute - 1939 To me, this painting produces the greatest sense of motion. Architectura (also known as Cityscape) - 1939 Incuneandosi nell' abitato (Diving on a City) - 1939 Probably Crali's best-known work. Kamikaze - 1980 Painted when he was about 80. Monoplano jonathan - 1988 Done near the end of his life -- and still Futurist!

This is a really elegant still life by an artist who started as a fiery young Futurist painter in the early 20th century and later mellowed into a noted artistic director and prolific graphic artist. We think the date reads 1943 and from the painting's highly stylized, minimalist composition we can easily see the influence of graphic design. Still lifes can often feel very dated but this one has a very modern aesthetic that makes it easy to mix in with any decor. Signed and dated in upper right hand corner. In new gold tone frame. Sight size: 19 5/8 x 15 1/4 inches. Lucio Venna was born Giuseppe Landsmann in Venice, Italy in 1897. At the age of fifteen he moved to Florence to study art at the studio of Emilio Notte. There he took up with the Futurists, an Italian intellectual movement that emphasized speed, technology, youth, violence, and objects such as the car, the airplane, and the industrial city -- all that represented the technological triumph of humanity over nature. For Italians under the yoke of Austrian domination, they were also passionate nationalists. Futurism played out mostly in art and theater, and young Lucio/Guiseppe contributed both his artwork and his energy to Futurist art expositions and plays. Cubism was a key component of the Futurist aesthetic and the movement is said to have contributed to the later development of the Art Deco, Constructivist and Surrealist movements. But the Futurist period itself was quite brief and by 1920, with the "return to order" the extreme avant garde movements of Cubism and Futurism were largely rejected and replaced with a return to traditional, classical-based forms of art. Even Picasso is said to have abandoned cubism for a time. In 1922, Lucio returned to Florence and opened his advertising studio, Venna Creations. He became one of the most successful and prolific graphic designers of the period, contributing to the golden age of European advertising art. One of his most notable clients was the Ferragamo design family. He switched gears in 1937 and became, for the next 22 years, the technical and artistic director of the Florentine magazine Illustrated Scene. During his last decades he concentrated mainly on painting, printmaking and teaching applied art at the Art Institute of Florence. He died in Florence in 1974.
