My students absolutely adore the book "My Truck Is Stuck" by Kevin Lewis and Daniel Kirk! I created this storybook companion to go along with it in my speech room. If you need to purchase this book, you can do so here: This packet is 41 pages in length and includes the following activities: -Sign-In Activities: Use these activities for students to “sign-in” for the day. Have the students trace the words. (includes 3 sign-in cards, 1 sign-in scene) -Story Retell: Students will draw cards and place them in order on the sequencing mat. Whoever completes the sequence correctly first wins! (includes 1 sequencing mat, 6 retell pictures) -Construction Rhyming: Students take turns drawing cards. Students will read the word (or have it read to them) and they will state another word that rhymes with the word on the card. If they answer correctly, they place their card on their mat. Whoever covers each spot on their mat first wins! (includes 1 student mat, 30 word cards, 6 blank cards) -Final /k/ Trucks: Students take turns drawing cards. Students will practice the word on the card 3 times. Use the wheels on the truck (on the mat) as a pacing card if need be. If they answer correctly, they place their card on their mat with the truck. Whoever has the most cards wins! Or use a reinforcer. How many times have you had this problem? You have worked hard on requesting with a student who is using an AAC device or picture communication book, and they are requesting up a storm! Not a problem really, right? Well, what if they could do even more with their communication? How about the next step which would be commenting! How great is it to give a child a way to comment on their world, and not just request in it? A friend of mine posted this video in an AAC group, and I thought it was great. This You Tube channel called TheDadLab has so many great ideas for exploring with young children! My initial thought was, "I see blue water all over the floor!" These little cuties are having a great time exploring a small area, and I can really see how this would be great, but I also saw a huge mess of blue water on my carpet thanks to some of my more enthusiastic friends. I decided to try something similar, but using beans. I know that this could still cause a mess, but vacuuming up a few beans is much easier than cleaning up a big blue stain on the carpet in my office! I took a clear glass baking dish and poured enough beans inside to cover the entire bottom. I then took a piece of paper with pictures printed on it and placed it under the glass dish. I then took a clear plastic cup that I cut down in size and cleared a space in the beans for the cup. My students were able to move the cup around and see what was hiding underneath the beans! Using books is a great way to work on "I see..." Board books work well when focusing on commenting. They are durable and will withstand use from my most enthusiastic friends. I like to pull out an activity page with icons that represent pictures in the book. I found this picture viewer when I moved into my speech room years ago. It is great for going through a bunch of pictures, and engages my students more than just flipping through the pictures with our hands. They love pulling down the tray to change the pictures! One more way I like to work on "I see" is with an iPad app called Peekaboo Barn. This app is really cute and engaging! I made visual icons to represent everything that pops up in the app. The students tap on the barn door to reveal who is behind the doors (look for a later post on how to use this for "I hear"). I should also say that even though the "I see" icon looks like it is always present on my sentence strip, I actually move it back to the same spot in their books every time they make an exchange. I keep it on the same page as their "I want" icons, so they do have to learn some discrimination for these tasks. I hope you can use some of these tips and work on commenting with your students!

The May calendar should be up tomorrow. Here is one of the activities for this month! Cut out 2 copies of dice page, so you should have two different dice. Print out animals and color them. Glue one animal on each square of the two dice. Assemble dice by gluing or taping on the tabs. To play: Pick which dice you want to roll on your turn. If you roll the penguin, say "I can (turn my head)" and do the action with your child. Then it is your child's turn to do the same thing. Make sure they get a good /k/ sound in the word "can" and help them to say all the words and not leave any out. Have fun!

I recently started working with a new private client who has a preposition goal. I love using stories that help reach a target so Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins immediately came to mind when I was planning my activities for the week with him. After I decide on a story to use with a student, Pinterest is always my first stop! I found two free downloads that had some great graphics and props to use with the story. You can download one here and the other here. I used a combination of photos from each website. As we read the story, I let him take Rosie (on a stick!) and act out the story. He moved Rosie around the pond, over the haystack, under the beehives, etc. This was a great way to work on preopsitions! After the story was over we played a little Simon Says with Rosie! Here is a picture of one of my students at my school acting out the story! She is making Rosie go through the fence! You may remember, last Friday I posted about an app that I have been using to create vocabulary activities with. If you missed it, you can check it out here! I also created a vocabulary activity for Rosie's Walk. I even got real creative and had one of my older students with artic goals record the words/ prompts for me! Have an amazing weekend! Happy Friday eve :) I can feel the school year winding down and summer approaching! With that being said, Spring is being celebrated in PreK this month. This week we read In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming. Last year I read a blog post by Jenna from Speech Room News about her activity that she did with this story. I decided to do it with my kiddos, too! With this activity, my students were able to retell and recreate the story. I started with a piece of green card stock paper (we had an abundance in our room for some reason) and folded it almost in half. I left room at the top for the sentence, "I see ____ in the tall, tall grass." Then I let the kiddos choose their favorite critters from the story and let them glue them in the grass. After they were done, they were able to peek through the grass and tell me what they saw using the prompted sentence, "I see ___ in the tall, tall grass." This was a great story and activity to target: spring vocabulary wh-questions using complete sentences grammar following directions prepositions qualitative concepts quantitative concepts etc., etc., etc.! Been working on some adapted books, plus some activities to go with them. I started off with Eric Carle, because who doesn't love Eric Carle!! I did Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see? And I did Polar Bear, Polar bear, what do you hear?
