Tonight I'm enjoying the sound of wind chimes through the window as the winds shift and winter blows back in. It's cold outside, so I'm staying bundled up inside and checking in just long enough to share a bulletin board I made today, to complement a lesson I'll be starting tomorrow on friendship. And, before I unplug again, some reflections on friendship: Making and keeping friends is an important skill for children to learn. Not only are friends fun to have around, but healthy attachments are an important part of a child's experience in school. Children that can form friendships tend to adjust to the school experience better because they're more likely to develop self-esteem and build important social skills, like getting along, cooperating and problem-solving. Since students don't come to school with these skills neatly tucked away in their backpack, we must be modeling, teaching, and practicing them in our day-to-day interactions right alongside of and, dare I say it, woven into academic content. How do you help your children find friends that fit? Here are some goals that friends can work on as new relationship opportunities present themselves: *Cooperate and be kind to others. *Be willing to play fairly, take turns, and share. *Listen to others' ideas. *Apologize and forgive one another. *Express feelings appropriately. Use "I" statements to share how you're feeling and what you need from your friends. *Practice empathy to respond to friends' feelings in an understanding, helpful way. *Be honest and loyal to your friends. *Keep a positive attitude and hang out with friends who uplift you. *Show respect. Be the kind of friend that you would want to have. *Express gratitude and appreciation. Encourage your children to choose one of these goals at a time to work on as they learn how each one looks, sounds, and feels in their world at their age. Remember that how these goals play out will change slightly through the ages and stages. Talk with your child(ren) about the qualities that they look for in a friend. Ask questions like these: *How did you decide on those qualities? *What do you usually do to make a new friend? *What advice would you give a classmate who is having a hard time making friends? *Would you want to be your friend? Why or why not? *What qualities do you have to offer to someone that might make you a good-fit friend? To enrich the discussion, have students trace their hands onto a paper, left on one side, right on the other. On the right hand, have them write five strengths that they bring to a friendship. On the other hand, have them write five areas for growth, things that they could do better in their friendships. If you don't have access to paper-pen supplies, partners can put their hands together as if they're giving a high-five and take the Five Finger Friendship Challenge aloud. There’s a terrific image floating around Pinterest for teaching diversity: Speaks for itself, right? Well, it got me thinking. (You’re not surprised, are you?) I found myself wondering how I might use this image to create an activity that not only teaches diversity in skin color, race or ethnicity, but also includes conversation about disability. The Egg Activity to Teach Diversity & Inclusion Materials: 1 small white egg 1 extra large white egg 1 brown egg 1-2 eggs (any color) with marks or “imperfections” 1-2 eggs (any color) with slight cracks (not enough to break the egg open) Activity: 1. Display all of the eggs. 2. Ask students to describe the various eggs, noting similarities and differences. Be sure to highlight the following differences: · Size of eggs · Color of eggs · Markings · Cracks 3. Direct students to guess what the eggs will look like inside. 4. Crack each egg open in a separate bowl. 5. Compare how, despite the exterior differences, all of the eggs are the same on the inside. Depending on students’ age; emphasize the ways we tend to underestimate people and their abilities when we judge them only by the way they look. Discuss how this might positively change the way we treat people in the future. Variations for older students: 1. If your classroom has been established as a safe space, some older children and/or teens may feel comfortable sharing their own challenges and/or disabilities as a part of this conversation. This could be the perfect opportunity to discuss such “invisible disabilities” as dyslexia, processing disorders, anxiety, etc. Possible extension: 1. Make a list of things that are important about you that others would easily know just by looking. Make a second list of things that are important about you that others would not be able to know just by looking. Which list is longer? Which list feels more important? What can this teach us about ourselves and other people? Sign up here to be sure you never miss a post from Removing the Stumbling Block:

{If you're looking to do a unit about friendship and community, here are a few kinder-tested activities that we know will be a hit in the classroom!} Nancy Carlson's How To Lose All Your Friends makes a great addition to your community/friendship lesson plans. With it's humorous drawings and witty prose, your kiddos are sure to relate to the story, recognizing the marks of bratty behavior and reviewing how not to be a friend! We think it would be a great idea to add a visual demonstration when presenting the story. Most of your kiddos have been taught that negative attitudes and behavior can cause problems with friends, parents, teachers, etc., but what they may not understand is that {especially in a classroom setting} their behavior doesn't just affect themselves, but can affect everyone around them... Supplies You'll Need Clear glass Water Food coloring or liquid watercolor paints Before beginning the story, have your students observe the water in the clear glass. It's clean, pure, and would be very refreshing to drink. Invite them to think of the glass of water as the classroom environment. Show them the food coloring, equivalent to all the bratty traits presented in Carlson's book - tattling, taking all the good toys, not sharing, whining, cheating, lying, name calling, etc. Ask them what they think will happen when you add a drop of food coloring to the glass of water. Just as the color spreads, diffusing into the water, a bad attitude and mean behavior can change the entire feel of the learning environment. When we did this demonstration, we did it as we read the story and added a drop of food coloring with each new bratty trait presented. At the end of the story, the main character was friendless and the water was a muddy brown. The students didn't even want to think about taking a sip. It was a great way to show students how negative behavior can ruin friendships and can have an impact on the way a classroom functions!
