Use this -ch and-tch Spelling Rules Poster as a visual anchor chart to guide students to spelling success when choosing between the digraph or trigraph. Incorporate the Science of Reading into your spelling routine and see student success quickly! The rule is: ❤️The /ch/ sound must be in the final position for '-tch' to be used. ❤️If the a word ends in the /ch/ sound but has a long vowel sound OR a consonant sound in between the short vowel and /ch/ sound, you use the '-ch' spelling (ex: beach, coach, lunch). ❤️There are exceptions to this (ex: such, much) due to language origin. There are always exceptions, but teaching students rules like this from the beginning sets them up for spelling success for the rest of their lives'. Guess My Rule Directions Preparation: • Print out picture tiles, cut, and laminate • Print out “Headers”: “My Rule” and “Not My Rule” • Cut out “Headers” and laminate Directions: Teacher or teacher assistant will place headers down on table. Next, he/she will place certain pictures that follow their rule under the header “My Rule”. Other pictures that do not follow rule will be placed under header “Not My Rule.” Students may work together or in isolation to determine the rule. For Example: Under the header “My Rule” teacher may place the pictures of the cat, crayon, and cupcake. Under the header “Not My Rule” teacher may place pictures such as a banana, dog, and ant. Student would then answer “The rule is words that start with the letter C.” After students are comfortable with game, they may play by themselves. This game never gets old given that it is always changing depending on the student’s “rule.” Challenge: Students and/or teacher may make game more challenging by including more than one letter for their rule. For example, he/she may include pictures that start with x, a, and m under the header “My Rule.” Other pictures that do not start with these letters would be placed under “Not My Rule.” Recording My Work (optional): Students may use the provided recording sheet to keep score while they play.
