Sometimes when working with young children on the production of speech sounds, it is helpful to provide the little one’s with a fun label, or name, for the sound(s) you are teaching. Providing a visual cue to go along with the label is also very helpful, to provide multisensory instruction. Several years ago I asked […]

I love using my No Frills Articulation products. I keep them all in a binder and am able to flip through to the pages I need quickly. They are so great to pull out when I need some quick sentences to use when playing a board game that students have chosen, or when I have a quick articulation student that I only see for 5 minutes. I have also sent some pages home with students as homework. I am so excited about my newest addition to the No Frills family: No Frills Articulation: R This packet targets prevocalic /r/, as well as six different vocalic /r/'s (-ar, -air, -er, -ear, -ire, -or). In this packet, you get: Memory Cards (84 cards– 12 for each form of /r/): Print two copies of the cards. Laminate and cut out to play a memory game. Phrase Worksheets (4 worksheets): Students can read or repeat the phrases. There is a spot to record the number of correct responses at the bottom of the page. Sentences Worksheets (7 worksheets): Students can read or repeat the sentences. There is a spot to record the number of correct responses at the bottom of the page. Music is organized sound. I like to give students opportunities to organize sound and icons for sounds before we work with organizing notation. One of the ways I do that is to create sound songs. We take a basic grid and brainstorms sounds we can make with our bodies (APPROPRIATE sounds *giggle*) and then draw shapes and simple picture to represent them. We draw them into the grid so that they are organized and then perform them for each other. FUN! Another thing I like to do is work with ready icons for body percussion. I introduce this in Kindergarten, but we review it in 1st and 2nd grades and add a composing element to it. Until recently I used a pretty old set of body percussion clip art to create a slide show. Here's what the new version looks like: I used this with some classes this week and they loved it! We talked about one sound to the beat means a quarter note and one picture in each square. After we add barred eighth notes or two sounds on one beat we'll take some time to compose our own. I'll print out little copies of all the body percussion actions and they will place them on the squares in the grid and perform. When we finish or as we begin to use this activity just to review or as a warm-up I'll add some body percussion worksheets to the end of class or to workstations. I'll be using these: Quick enough to do in the last ten minutes of class or at a workstation, I really like making connections to reading and writing AND music. Check out the Body Percussion set HERE.
I found these cute frog containers at Walmart and thought they would be perfect for a digraph sorting activity for my first grade teacher friends. If you can't find the containers at Walmart, you might want to head on over to Target as they carry many of the same seasonal items. Although the frog containers are adorable, the sorting activity really works with any type of container. Click HERE to download 32 FREE consonant digraph pics for sorting. I LOVE saving figurative language until June - it's such a fun language unit ... and perfect for our "dreaming of summer brains". We finished up our EQAO testing mid week, and this onomatopoeia activity was the perfect break from testing. How fun is that??? Students chose two contrasting colours - one for the background and one for the word and border "bursting out of the page". They also needed newspaper (cut just a fraction smaller that the "bursting out of the page border" and glued the newspaper on top. They glued their word on top of that (we had brainstormed a lot of onomatopoeia words, but for some reason most of them chose SPLAT for their word). I also had them do a little shading under their letters for that little extra POP (see, I know some onomatopoeia words, too). ;) I had seen this awesome idea on Pinterest and followed it back to Artisan des Arts. Her examples are FANTASTIC!! We also wrote simile poems this week. I found a little template HERE for the students to use for their rough copies. When students were finished their templates, I had them write out their good copies, and illustrate a few lines with a small image. I hung these up, too ... LOVING our bulletin board switch up ... even this late in the school year!!! (I have two of these "smART class" bulletin boards side by side in the classroom. 15 more school days left ... I think I can ... I think I can ... Happy Friday!!!
