Let the Sorting Hat decide which Hogwarts House you are from with this printable Hogwarts Sorting Hat pillow box. Simply fill this box with colored candy and let your guests choose which House they are from at your next Harry Potter party. When we threw Harry Potter's birthday party this weekend, I got asked a lot which house I was from. I think Harry Potter fans like to put themselves into houses and imagine which adventures they would have. But I have to admit, I think I'm all the houses together. One moment, I may be Slytheran. The next I may be more Ravenclaw. It just depends upon the day and the moment. But for those who like a little more spontaneity and want the Hogwarts Sorting Hat to tell them which Hogwarts house they are going to be in, I created these Sorting Hat pillow boxes as a fun addition to a Harry Potter party. Of course, once you get your guests sorted, you will need to make sure they have their Survival Kits, so don't miss grabbing those for your Harry Potter party too. On the front of each of the pillow boxes is a graphic of a Sorting Hat and the words "Hogwarts Sorting Hat." The back of the pillow box has the poem the Sorting Hat sings in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." The boxes are easy to make. Simply print on to card stock and then use scissors to cut around the edges. Score along the dotted lines, glue, and then fold together. To have the hat decide on the Hogwarts house, simply fill each pillow box with colored candies. I used red M&Ms, yellow M&Ms, green M&Ms, and blue M&Ms for each of the houses. Red is for Gryffindor. Yellow is for Hufflepuff. Green is for Slytherin. And blue is for Ravenclaw. At your party, randomly add your pillow boxes to a basket and let guests pick their Sorting Hat box to be sorted into different houses. This would be a great idea to begin the party with so you have "teams" for your party games. Or you can use it as a party favor or as a yummy treat on your dessert table. Right click and save your Sorting Hat pillow box now or be sure to Pin It for your next Harry Potter party.

Reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone? Learn how to hold your own Hogwarts sorting ceremony!
Did you know that Feb. 5, 2015 is Worldwide Harry Potter Book Night? Well, it is. You know what that means? It's time to pick up a book and dive back in. Go on, you know you want to. When is the last time you re-read your Potters? For me, it was 2 years ago. So, it is HIGH TIME I read them again. One of the first and most exciting things that we experience at Hogwarts is the House Sorting. In my parties, I've done it two different ways. You can read about those here and here. For this idea though, I went a little sweeter. The idea came from my Zombie Party cupcakes. It's just a cupcake of any flavor filled with a tinted cream filling. Tint your cream filling in the house colors: red for Gryffindor, blue for Ravenclaw, yellow for Hufflepuff, and green for Slytherin. Squeeze a bit into your cupcakes, then top with a delicious buttercream. No one will be able to tell from the outside which is which. When you bite into them though... It's a simple, but fun, and delicious way to get sorted into your House. Fun for a night of reading, watching, or a great way to sort into houses at a Harry Potter party! If you are a seasoned Harry Potter fan, isn't it time you read them again? If you've never read them before: A. WHY NOT? and B. See what all the hype is about, pick up a book today! It's been almost 18 years since the first Potter hit the shelves. Yet the magic is still fresh no matter how many times we've read or seen them. As Jo said herself: “Whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.” Thanks, Jo. <3 Tina See these cupcakes featured at the world's largest Harry Potter site: Mugglenet. Harry Potter Sorting Cupcakes By Tina @ Sugar Bean Bakers Needed: 24 cupcakes (any flavor/recipe) 1 recipe buttercream (below) 1 recipe cream filling (below) red, blue, green, and yellow food coloring 4 piping bags and large tip While your cupcakes are baking, make the following: Cream Filling: 1/2 Cup Whole (Vitamin D) Milk (not 2%, 1%, or fat free) 3 Tablespoons Flour 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 Cup Butter (not margarine) barely room temp 1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar (NOT powdered sugar) In a small saucepan, whisk flour into the milk until smooth. Heat, stirring constantly, until very thick, thicker than pudding. Remove and allow to cool fully. You can sit the pan in an icebath if you don’t want to wait. In your mixer, beat butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add vanilla. Once cool, add the flour/milk/vanilla mix to the butter and sugar and beat until fluffy. When finished, it will look like whipped cream, but be much thicker. *Note- you can also shortcut this by just squeezing a bit of tinted Buttercream into the middle instead of the actual cream filling. Portion out into 4 bowls and tint one blue, one red, one green, and one yellow for the House colors. Set aside. After your cupcakes are cool, add your first color to a piping bag fitted with tip. Stick your tip down into your cupcake and squeeze. You will see the cupcake puff up a bit, that is how you know you have enough. If you add too much, your cupcake will crack open. Repeat with the other colors. Scrap off any excess cream so the color will not show outside of the icing. Whip up a batch of Vanilla Buttercream 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 lb. confectioners’ sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 to 3 tablespoons heavy cream 2 teaspoons vanilla extract In a large bowl, or the bowl of a standing mixer, beat the butter for 3 minutes. Beat in the sugar and salt. Add 2 tablespoons heavy cream and whisk on high for 4 minutes, until fluffy. If frosting is too thick, add more cream, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, until desired consistency. Stir in the vanilla. Recipe by Bakingdom Swirl on top of cupcakes taking care to cover any hints of the color below. Add sprinkles if desired.
Even Snape would approve.
Activities are an important part of any party. First start by sorting each guest into one of the four houses. Next let them sit around eating and chatting. Use this opportunity to take pictures and make use of your photo station. End the night with a hilarious game of Hogwarts themed game of charades, pictionary, or five nouns. When attending a wizarding party, most attendees will already have a house to which they are aligned. Don't try and force a sorting. Simply have your sorting hat out with house stickers. SORTING HAT On top of the stool she [Professor McGonagall] put a pointed wizard's hat. This hat was patched and frayed and extremely dirty... For a few seconds, there was complete silence. Then the hat twitched. A rip near the brim pend wide like a mouth -- and the hat began to sing: (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, 117) I used an plastic container I had sitting around to make a Sorting Hat. I covered the label by gluing on the print out (below). It is about 7 x 3.5 inches. One side reads, "Choose Your House" and "Wear & Display Your Badge with Pride." The other side is the Sorting Hat Song. Using full sheet sticker paper, make your own house badges and place them into the container along with markers, if your guests wish to color. Simply copy and paste the images below to a word/pages document and print :) A mistake I have made before is to have too many activities planned for a party. So you can get by by only playing one game. The word list below is good for playing a number of games such as charades or pictionary. Right click to open image in a new tab and print :) At my party we played a game called 5 nouns (it's my favorite). It's really easy and this is how it is done: Ordinarily, this game is played by having everyone write down 5 nouns and place it into a hat. For my party, I wrote down the nouns ahead of time. Split into two teams. Each team gets a turn for one minute. In that one minute a player takes a turn trying to get their team to guess the noun. 1 point per noun. Round One is like the game Taboo. You have to get your team to guess as many nouns as possible by describing them without using the noun itself. Teams take turns guessing until all the nouns have been guessed. Round Two using the same set of nouns, time limit, etc. the players have to get their team to guess the noun by using only 1 word. Seems difficult, but remember that everyone has heard the words at least once during Round One. Round Three is the same as Round Two but now it's charades. No words or sounds, just acting out the nouns. Lots of fun. Hilarious.
