I've mentioned in the past how I used to love playing with Legos as a little girl. (And, yes, how much I still like to play with them as a grown woman.) One of the things that bugged me when I was younger was how we always ended up losing the instructions to the set of Legos. Of course, I could and would use my imagination to build really neat things, but a lot of the times, I wanted to build from the directions. So, when we first started getting Lego sets for the boys, I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't throw the instructions away, in case the boys ever should want to use them a long time from when they got the set. At first, I just made sure they were kept with the bucket of Legos. But, the boys would just throw them aside, and they started getting torn up. Then, I started stockpiling them into a Ziploc bag, up and out of reach for the boys, after they had a chance to build from the instructions. When they would ask to find something to build, I'd get it down, they'd look through the booklets, and pick out a set of instructions. And when they were done, back in the Ziploc they'd go. We quickly filled the Ziploc. And the bag wasn't doing much to protect the instructions, seeing as they could still get torn apart. So I came up with this idea a long time ago, and never got around to it, until today. I have started the process of organizing all of our saved Lego instruction booklets! (That doesn't make you as excited as it makes me...does it?) I started by getting a bunch of clear, plastic page protectors. The kind that will fit in a three-ring binder. I happened to have a package of 10 with my scrapbooking stuff (which I never use anymore) and started the process with those. And then I quickly realized how many this process was actually going to take....a TON. So I went to Office Depot (after calling to make sure they had what I wanted) and got three boxes of 100 page protectors. Then I started filling them with the Lego instructions. I took the staples out of the ones that were actually still held together, and then cut the pages apart so I could slip in a page per page protector. Some of the smaller instructions were easy and I just slid the whole page of instructions into a sleeve. Others, like the bigger sets, took many, many sleeves. (Like "The Burrow" Harry Potter set took 40 sleeves!!!) Then I stuck them in the binders! We have an entire binder of Harry Potter sets, and I will actually need to get a bigger binder for that since I know there are a few more sets to come for Christmas. There is also an entire binder of Toy Story instructions, and will also need a larger binder for that, too, because I still have 3 or 4 sets of instructions to get into sleeves, but won't fit since the binder is already full! And we have another binder full of the Lego City, Atlantis, Pirates of the Carribean, and other random sets that we have. I'm sure I will need more binders, because I ran out of page protectors and still have so many sets to put away! I will probably need another 300 or so page protectors for just the instructions I have left to organize. And I know that there are a bunch more coming with Santa! I plan on getting some tab inserts, as well, in order to separate the different sets of instructions. I didn't think about it until I had finished with one set and started another. It will make it easier and quicker for them to find the different instructions. You really don't know how excited I am to have finally started this. It makes me so happy to have the instructions protected and all together! I know, they aren't my Legos, but like I said, I wanted to keep these instructions protected for the boys as they get bigger. And because Jackson is the only one who has really "read" the instructions; I need to be able to save them for the following boys! Also, aren't the instructions what you are really paying for when you fork out the dough for these little pieces of plastic??? So, duh, I want to save them! Now I just need to sort the Legos back into colors like they used to be at one point.... I spent a lot of yesterday morning browsing the internet of all of the really cute headbands for baby girls. As I mentally tallied how much all of the ones I liked would be, it really added up! I am a crafty person, so I figured that I could easily make most of the ones I saw. So, today I hit up Hobby Lobby in search of headband making supplies. One of the first things I discovered is that the fold over elastic, used in many, many headbands, is basically only available online. I've found some places like here, and here, and here that you can order from and I probably will be doing so in the near future so I can make some more. I need to spend a little more time researching and finding the best deal on it, though. Anyway, back to Hobby Lobby...I skipped the flowers and other dainty things, and thought I'd try out at least just the jersey knit headbands, since they looked pretty simple and I've worked with making jersey rosettes in the past. I also got some felt to make some felt rosettes from this tutorial I had seen on Pinterest. And after posting a picture of Piper in the first one I made, I was asked to show someone how to do it. So, I put this tutorial together. I hope it's helpful! First I cut the white jersey knit material. I have a newborn, who is tiny, so I started with 12 inches, and I made it about 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide. I put together this little list from info I had found on how to measure for what age baby. After cutting the length of material, I then put the ends together... ...and sewed straight along the edge. Then I folded the bottom and top into the center of the seam. Bottom up... ...top down. And then I sewed a zig zag stitch, back and forth a couple of times, to hold it together. And it ends up looking like this. You don't have to do anything to any of the other edges because the material just kind of rolls under. One of the fun things about jersey knit! Then, I cut out a bunch of circles. They don't have to be perfect. And you want to do them in various sizes. You'll notice that I cut two at a time; I just folded over the material, and it made the circle cutting go twice as fast. After cutting out the circles, I took a few and folded them in half and then in half again, to make it look like this... And then I put three of those on top of one of the largest circles. I went ahead and got the needle and thread out to hold all of the circles in place as I piled them on top of each other. After the layer of three "triangles," I laid a smaller circle on top of them, flat, and then made another layer of "triangles" (smaller ones folded). Then I topped the pile with the smallest circle, and then stuck the needle back down through all of the layers. From underneath, I wove the needle in and out of the bottom few layers, in a circle around the center... And then cinched it a little to make it pucker up some. Then I tied off the string. Fluff up the layers a little bit, and this was the final product. I made two flowers and then moved over to the hot glue gun. Squirted a dot of glue in the middle of the bottom of each flower, and then stuck them on the headband, over the seam. This is what the finished product looked like from the bottom. You can see that I kind of squished the two flowers close together; it makes them ruffle up a little bit more when you do that. And you could always sew the flowers on, but...it's easier to glue! And here is what it looks like on my baby Piper! And then I made a couple of them with the felt, using the jersey knit for the headband.
