When Pokemon Arceus came out, I started playing it like many other fans. I quickly fell in love with the starter Rowlet for how cute and round he is. I knew of course that I had to crochet my own Rowlet plush. I first free-handed this plush as I just wanted it for myself and … Rowlet Plush Free Crochet Pattern Read More »

Josefien Cardigan uses a rich mix of traditional stranded colourwork motifs, put together to make a pretty and striking patchwork. By keeping the body and sleeves in two complementary colours, this design really allows you to experiment with any colour combination at the yoke. Bobble stitch is used to decorate the neckline and cuffs. The cardigan is knitted in the round from the bottom up in 3 pieces: the base + 2 sleeves. These are then put on one needle so that the yoke can be knitted in one piece. Instructions will also work if you wish to knit a pullover. Level of difficulty and skills required Intermediate. A fairly challenging project that requires chart-reading skills and assumes knowledge of stranded knitting. The cardigan is worked in the round so you will need to know how to knit, cut and secure a steek. Other stitches you’ll need to know are: cable cast-on, bobble, ribbing and garter. You will also need to know how to do short rows (although clear instructions for these are included, it’s helpful if you know the ‘Wrap and Turn’ method), make buttonholes and finish off by grafting under the arms at the end. Yarn Look for a super fine (1) or fingering-weight yarn that knits to 28 stitches in 10 cm on 2.75 mm (US 2, UK 12) needles. I prefer a non-superwash wool that will bloom and blend with the other yarns around it once washed. My sample cardigan uses 2 strands held together of Z. Hinchcliffe & sons Lambswool yarn, (2/17nm; 2-ply; 100% wool) in “tartan red” and “Ecru”. Available at Uppingham yarns (wools.co.uk). Other suggested yarns: Jamieson’s Spindrift; Rauma Finull; BC garn ‘Bio Shetland’; Knitting For Olive ‘Merino’; Isager ‘Tvinni’ Meterage needed 336 (425, 586, 750) m / 367 (364, 640, 820) yards of MC 300 (362, 500, 676) m / 328 (395, 347, 739) yards of CC You will also need about 8 contrasting colours for the yoke. Use oddments of any similar-weight yarn. Gauge On 2.75 mm (US 2, UK 12) needles, in pattern and after blocking: 28 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches). Or use needles to get gauge (I have a relatively loose tension and many of my testers used 3 mm needles to get gauge). Materials 1 pair of size 2.25mm straight needles (US 1, UK 13) 1 pair of size 2.75mm straight needles (US 2, UK 12) 1 size 2.75mm circular needle (US 2, UK 12) (at least 80cm long, for ease of working yoke stitches) or needles to get gauge 1 set of dpns in same needle sizes as used for the body, for the sleeves 8 stitch holders or waste yarn 4 stitch markers 7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12) 15mm buttons Kits for this design in 3 colourways are available to purchase from my website.
M., who I met on the facebook, in connection with MEC, advised me to have a look at the MAKATON signs that she uses with her daughter to connect the two languages. No matter which language you use, use the same sign for the same thing, so the child can learn to connect the meaning. You can make up your own signs as well, or do a signing course in Hungarian. I don't want to recommend any courses as we didn't take them. Just google it: baby sign language course Budapest. Here are some examples, signs we use on a daily basis: Though we sign the horse in a different way: You can find more signs here. You can also learn from a special BBC programme for kids with special needs. The programme itself is called Something Special. Each programme sees Justin and Mr Tumble (played by Justin) out and about applying signing in a variety of places. Topics covered include babies, pets, toys, weather, clothes, shops, food, all about me, where I live and colours. Mr Tumble always dresses up, wearing brightly-coloured clothes and even big shoes! He moves around clumsily and has lots of fun. The language used throughout each programme is supported by Makaton signs and symbols and is designed to be understood by children in the early stages of language development. Full episodes are 15-20 minutes long. What I did with this programme is that I watched them one by one on youtube. I learnt the signs (they are very straight forward and easy to learn) and started using them both in English and in Hungarian (same sign for the same thing). E. was 6-7 months old when I introduced signing to her. (4-5 signs at a time). When she was familiar with these (after about 2-3 weeks) I introduced new ones. Sometimes I picked a short part of an episode (max. 5-6 minutes long) and we watched it together. This could have begun earlier as well. But never cry over split milk. Click on the link, the first video I saw and really was fascinated by it - Something Special- Baby I don't do the signing all the time only if E. is not paying attention or I really want to link a new expression in both languages. Most of the time signing draws her attention. In the next post I'll write about some songs which can be followed with signing. It's a hit with kids. They love it! You'll love it too. -------------------------UPDATE 2016 ------------------------------- The programme Something Special (Mr Tumble) got renewed still it's great. On Something Special youtube channel you can even find songs signed by Mr Tumble (Justin)
