Well, in my 14 years at Zamo we never had rain to contend with during our Celebration of Art festivities... until last night, that is. I must say, that although unusual for San Diego in July, the rain did not dampen the spirit of the event at all:) Attendance was robust and their were tons of smiles to brighten any gloom that drops from the sky may have brought. Again, our incredible classroom teachers and staff were amazing while leading 10 different activities for our community to participate in. Our PTF rocked ticket and food sales. Our administration hung tough in the wet silent auction area. We were visited by our School Board President, the San Diego County VAPA Coordinator, and this morning our SDUSD Superintendent stopped by too. I am so proud of what our kids accomplish every year. It's so great to be able to share the creative work of our students with our school community and VAPA decision makers at the district level and beyond. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand in making the event another great evening of art making and art appreciation! We couldn't do it without you. our school musicians kicking off the evening. rain! First graders have been working on this painting the past few weeks. We are studying weather patterns and having fun learning new techniques with watercolor like blowing, dripping, and adding salt! Third grade is painting these fun jellyfish watercolor resists! I LOVE this Liquitex gloss Medium and Varnish!! It makes a great resist! We just painted this gloss medium right on the paper to create our jellies... We are using warm colors for the Jelly and cool colors+salt for the water I just LOVE the texture from the salt! One of the high school teachers in our district used the Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish to make these gorgeous multimedia watercolor resists for Dia De Los Muertos. They stamped the Gloss on the paper, drew their design, and painted over it. We are going to use this technique with our Sureal Self Portraits this year! Cannot WAIT!!

Topic 5: Deconstruction Hi everyone, It's Leandra back again to share the next Topic of 2015 with you. Now I will admit, this one had our designers stumped initially...they were like WHAT??? But if you put a bit of thought into it you will come up with some amazing ideas I am sure... and having had a sneaky look at the posts to come in the next 2 weeks, they certainly HAVE done that! For deconstruction, you might use a product for something it totally was not designed for....for example...do you remember when Julie-Ann made this for a Christmas gift ??? ...do you remember it started out like this....made from Amazon book packaging?? Exactly THAT kind of deconstruction is one option you could explore....but it can be as simple as tearing card or ripping corrugated card.... shredding paper to use as hair...but it might be as complicated as re-purposing tubes, cartons or containers into something totally different. In other words take an object or items and change it somehow by deconstructing and reconstructing...get it??? At heart I think we are all into altering objects in lots of ways, so I really think that you will get into this topic the more you think about it. On the face of it is seems a tad tricky...but when you open your fridge, you are going to start looking at your throw-away containers in a whole different way! Many of us might have started into this crafting lark by making cards, or scrapbooking our memories, but how long did it take you to start altering other unusual objects with paint and ink??? The essence of this topic is to change or alter something into something else, or adapt part of it into another project... How many objects and containers have you got sitting around just waiting for you to change them somehow? ... Like there are a million things you can do with Vintage Teacups...candles are a very popular option for instance. Or a succulent mini garden... There is a whole article here on easy to do re-purposing...I was so taken by these simple yet very effective light-bulb vases... Speaking of glass, there are lots of bottle ideas on pinterest too... such as... making tumbler glasses from beer bottles... how about painting your vases from the inside... or making light fittings from coloured glass bottles... or even crystal carafes can look so elegant... And here's another great tutorial on how to decorate in a more nautical theme with twine... This one has been painted and sanded back to reveal the darker paint or perhaps dark glass underneath How about some dip-dyed tin cans..more ideas with tins here... OK so here's a weird one...doll parts...thinking Darcy will like this one... check out the artist and many more examples here... Recycling materials...especially corrugated card is stuff we are all addicted to!!! Here is a really cool mannequin made from corrugated card I really love this idea, and its not difficult to achieve either, layers of paint onto corrugated car, chop up, tear, re-arrange...lots of fun! This is a lesson I've posted about before. It is based on artwork by M.C. Escher, and introduces the concept of negative and positive space, as well as negative/positive space reversal. One thing that is really awesome about this lesson is that there is no trash! Every single piece of paper that gets cut out of one side gets glued on the other side. With many other paper cutting lessons, the paper scraps all over the tables and floor take some time to clean up, but with this lesson, the only reason we would have any paper to recycle is if someone messes up and starts over. Here are a few student examples. This student created a car: Another student noticed that when turned upside down, it looks like a cow face! Everyone thought that was pretty awesome. This year, I put every single student's work on my bulletin board. I love how they look in a group! I think they look stronger together than individually.
Today's post showcases works by the painter, illustrator, and poster artist Vladimir Bobritsky (or Bobri, as he came to be known). Born in a wealthy family in Kharkov, Ukraine, in 1898, he studied at the Imperial Art School until the Russian Revolution began. During the ensuing civil war, Bobritsky fought on various sides before managing to escape to Turkey in 1917 using a handmade Polish passport skillfully forged by himself. For a few years he wandered in different areas of Greece and Turkey, while supporting himself with a variety of jobs such as painting icons and signs, designing theater sets and movie posters,and playing the piano. Bobritsky kept records of all his travels by constantly sketching his surroundings, and in 1921 earned his passage to the US by designing sets and costumes for a Russian ballet in Istanbul. Ads for Koret handbags, 1940 After arriving in New York Bobritsky held various jobs including art director at Saks Fifth Avenue, and soon found himself with enough clients to embark on a freelance illustrator career. By the 1930s Bobri, as he had begun to sign his name, was a leading illustrator working in fashion, magazines and advertising. His accounts included Hanes, Koret and Avon; he frequently contributed to Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, McCall's and designed seven covers for The New Yorker. A Kiss Is Round by Blossom Budney, 1954 In the 40's and 50's Bobry began to also produce llustrations for children's books, some of which have since become classics. His style was simple, elegant and bold. Let's Talk About Right and Wrong by Dorothy K. Kripke, 1955 Sleepy Book by Charlotte Zolotow, 1958 The Whiskers of Ho Ho by William Littlefield, 1958 Icebergs by Roma Gans, 1964 Early 1960s ads for Hanes seamless stockings Illustrations for The Guitar Review As a young man Bobri had learned from gypsies to play the guitar, and this passion continued all his life. In 1936 he was among the founders of The New York Society of the Classic Guitar, and served as editor or art director of its publication The Guitar Review until 1985. Other notable visual artists in the group were Gregory d'Alessio, George Giusti and Antonio Petruccelli. Vladimir Bobri lost his life in a house fire in 1986 that also sadly destroyed most of his works.
