I'm working a summer reading and math camp and I wanted to set up some fun camp-themed activities! I haven't gotten to all of the centers yet, but I thought I'd showcase just a few! I have a confession, number lines are not my favorite tools for adding and subtracting with my young learners. I always teach how to use them, but I don't spend very much time on them. My main issue is that, students will not always have access to a number line. I don't want them dependent on a tool that they may or may not be able to get their hands on. However, after doing a bit of research about some of the additional benefits of number line learning, I started to rethink my feelings about them. Besides solving basic addition and subtraction equations, familiarity with number lines helps students as they work with all sorts of other math tools. Graphs, thermometers, clocks, and rulers all include number lines. Not only can our work counting forward and backward on a number line help us to add and subtract, it can also lay the group work for upcoming mathematical concepts. Since I had a change of heart about the importance of number lines, I decided to devote more time to them this year. Here are a couple of quick activities I used with my students that they really enjoyed. First up is our Life-Size Number Line. I used this big number line for a whole group activity, but you can easily adapt it for a small group or center activity. I created it by printing the numbers 1-20 and laminating them. I made my line with some masking tape and then placed the numbers on top. The line wasn't straight and the numbers were't perfectly spaced, but that didn't matter at all. I made several slides for our interactive white board with basic addition and subtraction equations. (A regular white board will work just as well.) Students came to the number line individually. They read the equation to the class and then they solved it on the number line. They loved it so much that I used it with them the next day to solve word problems. (one prep and two activities #forthewin) Not only did the kids love it, I really liked using the Life-Size Number Line because it was an easy way to make sure students understood how to correctly move the number line. Another number line activity I incorporated was a quick and easy number line game. (I'm always looking for ways to use my Target Dollar Spot erasers and this activity was perfect.) All you need are some kind of game pieces, a number line, and a spinner (if you don't have a spinner, just use a paper clip and a pencil). This game works well with two to three players. To play, students take turns spinning. If a student lands on plus five, he moves his game piece forward five spaces. If he spins minus two, he moves his piece back two spaces. The game continues until the first player reaches the end of the number line. This activity was wonderful practice for students counting on and counting back. Since we've covered addition and are nearing the end of our subtraction unit, the Number Line Spinner game gave students a chance to begin mixing their facts. I plan on adding this game to our Early Finishers menu since the rules are so simple and there are so few pieces. I was thinking earlier this week, what time of the school year is busier?...the beginning of the year or the end of the year. I honestly don't know, but one thing I do know is that I enjoy the end of the year business a little more because it means summer break is right around the corner. There are so many extra details to consider at the end of the year. Grade cards, records (records and more records), special days, award ceremonies, class gifts, closing down your classroom, and more. It's really important to get an early start on all of these loose ends or you will find yourself staying up for some late nights trying get everything finished. One way you can help get yourself organized is by setting up some end of the year totes during the last couple of weeks. The totes I set up were complete, donate, put away, toss. In each tote I placed items or notes for myself to deal with as soon as possible. My goal was to take care of everything in the totes before going home that day (although some items stayed in the totes for a few days). But even if the tote wasn't cleaned out before I left for the day, having everything I needed to do together in one spot really helped me stay focused on getting my end of the year tasks complete. By the way, if there was something in the tote I needed to complete outside of school, like getting gifts for the students, I took a picture with my phone to reference when I was out running errands. This system really helped me get things accomplished before the last day of school. And while I was not able to walk out the door after our end of the year teacher luncheon, I had all my "have to's" finished and had a chance to work on some bigger organization projects. One item in my complete tote was a summer review packet for our rising first graders. I sent our new firsties (and a few of our rising second graders) a supply list and a review packet. Another to do before wrapping up for summer break was to get my students a fun little end of the year gift. In the past I've given books, candy, sidewalk chalk, and framed pictures of the class. Student gifts this year were bubble wands. I really love sending my sweet students out the door with a small treat. Our sweet girl is totally ready for summer break too. She will be in second grade. Am I a bit choked up?...yes. It is just crazy how quickly she is growing up. D and I love seeing the person she is becoming, but that doesn't stop me from wanting slow down time. The last days of the school year are super busy. But, with a little organization, you can end the year with plenty of energy to enjoy the summer.
Get the bundle... Or purchase individually... Let's talk guided math. We started implementing guided math in my school about 2 years ago. Prior to my guided math awakening I was making 4 math centers per day. I found myself stressed about not only the excruciating prep of creating so many activities each day, but I also struggled to get finished with the centers. When the idea of guided math was introduced, I greeted the change with open arms. So here's what works for me. I implement guided math by creating 5 math centers per week. I group my students heterogeneously and they rotate to a new center each day. During this time, I pull students who struggled during the math lesson and provide a reteach lesson individually. This means that most of my math centers are completed independently by the students. I'm lucky enough to have a full-time assistant in my classroom who is able to take a math center are help others while I'm with my reteach group. Here's how I organize my group rotations each week... I write student names on each group. I laminated stars and write the weekly center on each star with dry-erase and attach a magnet. When I rotate groups, I simply move the stars over 1 place. This way, students know which center to go to. I organize centers in numbered buckets shown below. See? Easy breezy! Currently, I'm working with my students on addition and subtraction. I'd love to share some resources I've found to be useful in my guided math groups. First, I made a Guided Math Center Bundle. You can get it HERE. This week, we used the Spin and Subtract center. Here, students spin subtraction sentences. This is great because I was actually able to use it 2 weeks in a row. Because they spin different combinations of numbers, the possibilities are endless! I also used a similar Spin & Add center. Here, students build number sentences. Addition & Subtraction I made some lower-maintenance addition math worksheets which require no-prep!
