The goal of the lessons in the Comprehending Social Situations & Social Language workbook for autism is to help students make a better connection to social situations by developing awareness of what is happening and why. The interactive workbook addresses four key areas of your child's social skill development: Listening, Observing, Connecting and Responding. There are student picture worksheets for each activity that are accompanied by a detailed Instructor's Worksheet for easy implementation. The lessons are all basic and simple to help provide a solid launching pad for children to better connect social situations and social language. 92 pages, recommended for mainstream ages 7-11.
Last week, Maryellen Moreau, creator of Story Grammar Marker®, consulted with two special educators in southern Connecticut about a student with Autism. This particular child’s evaluation recommended Story Grammar Marker® as an intervention. The school hired Maryellen to work with this child’s teachers as well as larger groups of staff in the school to get everyone on board with the SGM® methodology. During our first session last week, one special educator looked up at Maryellen and with awe in her voice said, “This is just so amazing. It is so simple…yet so, so deep. I know I will be able to do so much with this – with so many different students. How did you EVER think of this?” The answer to that question is that it happened in the late 1980s while Maryellen, a speech language pathologist, was Curriculum Director at the Curtis Blake Day School in Springfield, MA (a private placement for children with dyslexia and language learning disabilities)...

Comprehending Social Situations and Social Language provides material to give students repetitious practice in blending four skill areas - listening, observing, connecting and responding. The repetitious style in the practice materials reinforces the students' ability to comprehend a short social story that is read to them (auditory processing) while they are looking at a picture (visual stimulation) and in answering questions that require them to be more aware of subtle clues in both the social story and the pictured social situation. The goal of these lessons is to help the students make a better connection to social situations and to use more appropriate social language in those situations. An additional goal is to help the students recount and tell about various social situations that have happened in their day.
