I've been making some of the DIY's posted on the Sublime Speech Blog so I've got an excess of craft sticks around. While thinking about some conversational activities I've been doing I had an idea for a multi-leveled conversation activity using craft sticks. The yellow sticks have a variety of conversation topics for kids: There are 6 each of the red, orange, blue and green sticks. Three of each color say "question" and three say "comment." Level 1: On their turn, each student draws out one yellow stick and one different colored stick. They then have to ask a question or make a comment about the topic on the stick. Level 2: Pull out all the comment sticks. Have the first student draw a yellow stick and a different colored (question) stick and ask another student a question. Have the 2nd student a blue, green, orange or red stick and ask a follow-up question about the topic. Level 3 through ?: Keep adding numbers of conversational turns and comment sticks to increase the difficulty and the complexity of the conversation!

Over Spring Break I was able to attend one of Pam Dyson's trainings on "Play Therapy for Grieving Children" through the DFW Center for Play Therapy Training. I was truly inspired by all the directive techniques I could add to my toolbox for students at our school. One such idea was the incorporation of the game "Don't Break the Ice" in such a simple and easy way. Inspired by Sueann Kenney-Noziska's idea on Play Therapy Corner, Pam created an activity for children that helped open them up about their grief. Children knock pieces of ice out of the ice rink and answer questions based on which ice piece fell. At this training the game was targeted at children opening up about their grief and loss, but I thought I could easily tweak it for my anxious kiddos. It's extremely easy to create your own version and add therapeutic value. The first step is taking all of the "ice" pieces and adding a colored sticker to the bottom of them. Pam used those gold foil star stickers, I chose to use bright colored Avery circle labels because I had plenty of those on hand. There are 32 total ice pieces and 1 large ice piece for the skater. I decided upon 4 different prompts for our discussion about worries, so that evenly divided up the stickers into 8 per color. On the large ice piece I put 1 of each color so they could pick. When the ice is turned over for the game, students cannot tell which color is underneath the piece of ice. Then I created the question card. Instead of making 32 individual question cards, I chose to simplify our discussion to 4 prompts that could easily be answered numerous times. You could definitely make a variety of questions and color-code the stacks of cards. I thought about which 4 prompts would help students share/vent about their worries, discuss what happens in their body, receive validation, brainstorm helpful techniques for coping and also discover that other students had similar experiences. This is what I came up with, you can download a copy here (don't forget to add colored stickers that are on your ice pieces): The game was such a success we played it numerous times. Students even came up with fun variations on the rules for when more than one ice piece fell. Incorporating games into your work with children creates a safe and engaging platform to help them feel comfortable in opening up. I hope you have as much fun with your children as I did!

I am in a good mood because: 1. Today was the second day of the entire school year I had in my classroom alone, no students. Finally, got that work done I cannot accomplish with them in the classroom! (Besides the time I show up early or stay late to prepare for my weekly lessons) But I got to do some house cleaning! 2. I am wearing this bomb nail polish that has put Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" in my head on repeat. I can't even lie to you... I have really enjoyed seeing my nails sparkle on my document camera. Is this weird? Probably. 3. Mardi Gras is right around the corner and Holy Word I am ready. Unlike most of you, Southern LA did not get the snow day breaks. Whaa. Regardless... I am ready for my 2 days off. Ready for New Orleans, the parades, the Mardi Gras Ball, the beads. And mainly ready to paint my face with glitter, wear my purple/ green/ yellow feathered Mardi Gras boa and dance in the street. And yes I do plan on doing all of that. And to top off the Mardi Gras celebration, "The Park" always does a parade of Pre-K- 1st Graders.... SO CUTE! The kids drag their mini shoe box floats and throw beads to the rest of the school. Best day. Anyways, since I had so much time in my classroom today, I didn't have much to take home! So, I decided to upload my Journaling Sticks for you tonight :) Click Here Seriously guys, these sticks have been such an awesome tool! I have seen such creative writing taking place at the writing station! The journal topics really have gotten those juices flowing for my kids. Also, at the end of the Journaling Topics document are Quiz Questions (Who are the characters, what is the setting, etc.) These are a great tool to use during small group time. *There are 33 Journaling Topics and 15 Quiz Questions. I printed mine on Avery 1"x 2 5/8" (30 labels per sheet, Template 5160) Afterwards, I cut them down to fit on the large popsicle sticks. * And to top off the night, I finally figured out how to reduce my PDF sizes. About time.

I love how explicit it was in helping the students move from identifying the main idea from a group of sentences to a picture to a paragraph. I also loved the prompts to have students think for themselves before giving the answer to them. I had students turn and talk to a friend and then share, which was helpful in letting everyone get their ideas out, not just my students who love to talk!" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Tamara R. says, "These slides are great! I love how the concept is introduced and then has deepening levels of practice as the slides go on. Well-thought-out mini-lessons! Thank you!" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Marlisa S. says, "Awesome! This was especially helpful to my planning and organization to ensure students' needs were addressed and monitored. Thank you so much for a well-thought-out resource!" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Bridging Apples says, "I left this resource as sub work while I was out sick. It's my last week!!! Wahoo!!! Sorry this post is late. (Thanks to Ana at Mrs. Bentin's Blackboard for the text message and reminder that I hadn't posted this week's linky yet. I guess that even though there's one week left, my brain has already left the building. :) So please link up your plans for the week. I'm guessing most of you have "home" plans because you are already on break and that is good too! Being the last week of school, there are a lot of end-of-the-year loose ends to tie up. We will have our awards assembly, AR goal ice cream party, a talent show and field day. Thankfully, there is something going on almost every day to help keep us busy. In the classroom, we will be finishing up our read aloud of this wonderful book. Love this book and the beautiful story of August. I also love how the story end on the last day of school, about the same exact day we will read this part and end our story this year. We've done quite a few readers theater scripts this year to work on fluency. This week, I'm going to have the students work in groups and write their own script. It should be interesting to see what they come up with. Today, I found this fun pin on Pinterest. I love this project (anything that incorporates writing and art is awesome!) and will find somewhere to work this into our schedule. Students write about their year then decorate their hand print and the border. I think it would make a great memory of our year. I'm working on making Goodbye Bags for the kids. I went to Walmart and the dollar store this morning and loaded up on lots of fun things. When I get it all together, I will post about it. I was thinking of continuing the A Peek at My Week linky party throughout the summer, linking up to share our fun summertime plans, but I was wondering what you think. Do you want to see A Peek at My Week continue? Please leave me your thoughts in a comment below. (Also, my Thursday linky party, Positive Thinking Thursday, will continue throughout the summer. Thanks to all of you who encouraged me to do so!) An InLinkz Link-up

Role playing through puppet stick masks will give children the skills to handle different social interactions, which may happen as they progress through life. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. When children engage in role playing it helps to develop their way of thinking and helps them to develop feelings of empathy.A role play area is a fun and a 'playful' activity but also a key component in children's learning. It is a social space that develops speaking and listening skills, as well as giving children the opportunity to reflect on and develop their knowledge of a topic, whilst sparking and enhancing creativity and imaginations, improving their communication skills. This puppet stick masks set can be use to dramatize the classic story song “Five little Monkeys swinging on a tree“, where they tease Mr. Alligator, but suddenly one by one get snatched out of the tree. This set is made out of premium Heavy-weight card stock with a smooth finish and extra thick laminating sheets for durability. I personally designed, draw and painted this characters to create a unique product. What’s included? Also is a Great Gift Idea for children or preschool teachers. The set comes in a handmade labeled , Plastic Zip Envelopes Files to store for future play.
