These are my must-have speech therapy materials "schools edition!" I'll share my professional philosophy so you can understand my suggestions.
I made this free PowerPoint presentation for one of my clients who is working on describing the similarities and differences between two items. I usually give a visual cue card that helps him formulate sentences. The cue card says "They are the same because ________, but they are different because one of them _______, but the other one _______." You could also print these 2 or 4 per page and make flash cards with them. Download here!
Confession: I buy a new tote bag for work every school year. Maybe it stems from childhood and buying a new backpack for school. I love a good tote, especially for work. The difference between a good and a bad one can make all the difference in the world. And if you have a heck […]
Ah, sweet summertime. You know, the time of year when school SLPs & speech students can just sit back, relax, and forget about therapy for a few weeks. Just kidding, do we ever forget about therapy? I know I don't. My favorite part of summer (in the 4 days that I've had so far) has been planning out future therapy sessions. A few weeks ago I found my new obsession-- going to thrift stores. Ohhh man, do I love a good deal. In the past few weeks I have accumulated more than 16 games for around $30. Make sure to show your student I.D. if you go to Goodwill because there is a good discount. Another store in my area has student discounts on Wednesdays and other great deals the other days of the week. The other day I found a brand new Apples-to-Apples Jr. game for $1.80. Love it! I know that if I let myself, I will buy every game in the stores so I have limited myself to a list of games. I've done a lot of sleuthing online and have compiled a list of some of the best speech games out there. I also kept a list of the most-loved games at my summer practicum. My rule for myself is that I can't buy a game that isn't on the list... UNLESS I google the game name + "speech therapy" and come up with few hits on my phone. I've heard a few people say that they don't know which games to even look for so I figured I share my list. I can't guarantee each game is perfect so I'll make two lists-- one for games I own or know work well and a list of games that I haven't played but have heard good things about. So here is a list you can take with you everywhere (I have it in a note on my iPhone) so that you are always prepared :). Own or Know Sorry Don't Spill the Beans Mouse Match Scrabbled Eggs I Spy-Eagle Eye (or any I Spy game) Let's Go Fishing Hullabaloo Leap-in-Line Cariboo (If you find this game, BUY IT) Outburst Blurt (LOVE this game) Cadoo Jenga Hanging Around-- Monkeys War Candy Land Don't Break the Ice Operation Guess Who Apples to Apples Jr. Barnyard Bingo Dudley Dino Dinner Kerplunk Monkeying Around Pop Up Pirate Hi-Ho Cherry- O Twister Crocodile Dentist Memory Buckaroo Chutes & Ladders Zingo Whoonu Balloon Lagoon Operation Conga Cootie What's In Ned's Head Buckaroo Taboo Jr. Games I Still Want Hedbanz Bafflegab Funglish Rory's Cubes Aggravation Oodles of Doodles Password Jr. Spot-It Funny Bunny Pop the Pig Battling Tops Don't Wake Up Daddy Dignity Dog Go for the Dough Guess Where Buzz Blast Who Am I? On the 6th day of posting this Speech Lady gave to me, some games to elicit language. 1. Zingo Bingo-I recently came across this game and love it. Zingo has this cool little contraption that's like an old school credit card swiper. You move it back and forth and each time two cards with nouns on it appear. I have used it multiple times with my kids that have Apraxia. We keep the phrase "I have ....." and then they list one of two of the cards they get. All I know is if you can keep a 3 year old entertained with this for 45 minutes, then it's a winner for sure! 2. Elefun- This game just makes me happy. I have my kids collect as many butterflies as they can and then they bring it back to me. However many butterflies they get is how many times they have to practice a word. It's just so fun to see how excited the kids are as the butterflies start flying in the air. 3. Whac-A-Mole- I use Whac-A-Mole for a number of things. I use it for more obvious things like a reinforcer and then I have used it for working on multi-syllabic words, phrases, sentences etc. Here is a fun addition from Speech Room News and how she uses Whac-A-Mole. 4. Crocodile Dentist-When I want to use Kaufman cards and know there is no way my 2 or 3 year old is going to tolerate drill practice, I pull the Crocodile out. We feed the Crocodile all the cards and they say them as we feed him. This is definitely a reinforcer to have in your arsenal. 5. What's In Ned's Head?-I see mostly little boys, so anything gross is super enticing to them. I like this because you not only can work on body parts, but you can pretty much stick anything in Ned's head and use it to work on target sounds, vocabulary, inferencing etc. 6. HedBanz-This game is great for working on basic concepts, answering wh questions, asking questions, turn taking and the list goes on and on. My friend Angela even made it into a Superflex game.

I bought a large bag of 200 trinkets from Dinky Doodads on Etsy last year, but never really organized them like I wanted to. I just couldn't make the decision of what to do with them. Well, the inspiration came to me last week. I was talking to an Early Childhood Special Education teacher at my school and she showed me a bag that she had filled with water beads and rubber fish that she was using for an aquatic animals unit. It was so fun to squish around to find all of the fish. This made me think of all of those little trinkets that I had sitting around, waiting for the perfect activity. I just had to organize them into their sounds. I had a bottle of water beads from my days of making some sensory bins. Today I made a huge batch of these little pearls of fun! After all of the trinkets were organized by sound, I put them into little Ziploc bags... pushed all of the air out against the edge of the table... and sealed each bag. I can't wait to use these bags! I'm also thinking about buying another set and making categorization and phonological bags. When and if the beads dry out (not sure how long they will last) I plan on adding water to the bag to re-hydrate the water beads. I'll keep you updated when that happens.
