Pinterest is full of wonderful ideas if you are someone who enjoys making therapy materials. I'm not the best at crafty creations, but I was inspired by a photo that one of my coworkers recently posted. It's a Guided reading beach ball by Carson-Dellosa. Now, I am NOT going to pay $7 plus shipping for two beach balls. I would rather put that money towards a Super Duper purchase. However, I loved the basic concept of using beach balls to make reading more fun in therapy. Dollar Tree to the rescue! Supplies: 1-2 Dollar Tree Beach Balls (you may also be able to find these at Target's Dollar Spot) 1 Fine Tip Sharpie Marker 1 Flat Surface 1 List of questions I like the questions that are featured on the commercial beach balls. I typically ask my students what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. I also ask them about the setting, characters, and main problem. Write your questions on the beach balls using a permanent marker. I prefer Sharpies, but I'm sure there are other brands of markers out there that you could use. A flat surface as well as a ruler will help you write evenly. I can see this eventually morphing into a project for articulation and social skills as it is one of the easier projects I've seen. For some other cute ideas on how to use a beach ball in therapy, check out this post on Speech Room News.

Education and Training are integral parts in promoting safety within any skilled nursing facility (SNF) or long-term care facility (LTC) and it is our job as medical SLPs to provide education on safety to our patients, nurses (RN’s, LVN’s, CNA’s), other facility supporting staff, and to family members. One way for us to educate and train in the SNF and LTC facilities is to take time to do group intake trainings, and 1:1 face/face education and training sessions after an ST assessment with recommendations is completed. As part of this much needed training, visual signs have been my go to resource for the past 10 years as a medical SLP. I have utilized visual signs as an adjunct to the given training I have provided following each ST assessment with recommendations. So I have uploaded to my TPT store my safety visual signs I have successfully utilized for years. They are my own ideas based on the need of various patients I have treated over the years. They are also my most functional and most effective safety visual signs as per my patients/staff/family feedback and response to each visual. In this packet you will find the following functional visual signs: Call light....................................................................................Pages 4-5 Do not get out of bed.........................................................Pages 6-7 Wheelchair near you............................................................Pages 8-9 Walker near you.....................................................................Pages 10-11 Use your walker......................................................................Pages 12-13 Lock your wheelchair...........................................................Pages 14-15 Use safety bed rails.............................................................Pages 16-17 Use bathroom safety bars................................................Pages 18-19 Do not enter............................................................................Pages 20-21 Keep bed slightly upright/prevent aspiration...........Pages 22-23 NPO (nothing by mouth)....................................................Page 24 Restricted Diet: Purée Food.............................................Page 25 Restricted Diet: Mechanical Chopped Food..............Page 26 Restricted Diet: Mechanical Soft Food........................Page 27 Restricted Liquids: Only_____Thicken Liquid.............Page 28

What is happening in the deepest blue of the sea? What we take for granted is a layered and complex system of levels that are always changing. Explore the 6 layers of water and earth in the Earth's oceans. Along with textured felt pieces, there are also 16 laminated labels to describe the different ocean layers and the earth beneath them. This contains 2 sets of labels for each layer so it is adaptable to a wider range of ages. The labels include: Trenches Abyss Dark (Midnight) Zone Twilight Zone Sunlit Zone Sky Continental Shelf Continental Slope Continental Rise Ocean Basin Epipelagic Zone Mesopelagic Zone Bathypelagic Zone Abyssopelagic Zone Hadopelagic Zone With paint detail and a little bit of glitter the geometric layers of ocean are whimsical and textured. This set is simple enough for preschoolers and detailed enough for use within home school or early elementary classrooms. The laminated labels can be used for memory recall or as sight words. Included: 1 felt background 13"x13" (33cmx33cm) 7 felt layers with 12 uniquely notched sides for puzzle assembly. 16 felt backed labels Play ideas: Add books on geology, the earth, the layers of the ocean, sea life or biology. Discuss the difference between different layers and types of ocean regions. Race to see who can assemble the ocean layers first Match the labels to the ocean parts. Use as part of a preschool, early elementary or home school curriculum With notched pieces this set also works as a puzzle!! Check out our other listings to see more! We also have an ever growing science series including felt board sets on geography, space and biology. Twig and Daisy felt board sets do not have adhesive or hook and loop tape on the back of the pieces. I only use soft felt and it happens to contain a little bit of magic. Felt sticks to felt even on a vertical surface which is really cool! Adding hook and loop tape will actually ruin your felt board adding picks and making it look worn well before it's time. We are participating in a homeschooling Coop this year. I will be teaching one kindergarten class and one high school class. I found this amazing book, Storytime From A to Z, to use for the kindergarten class. Description from back of book, "Each unit in this resource is based on a favorite children's book and a letter of the alphabet. Inside the units you'll find creative activities that build phonemic awareness, letter recognition, letter-sound relationships, listening and reading comprehension, writing skills, and other important early literacy skills. You'll also find crafts, songs, reproducible activities, patterns, classroom displays, and much more." The first week of Coop, we read the book, Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready For Kindergarten. Amazon. com book review... On the first day of kindergarten, Miss Bindergarten must prepare her classroom for her beloved students. This noble, whimsical teacher greets her dark, summertime-empty classroom with an explosion of color--a bouquet of fall leaves, a goldfish, rolled-up posters, and shoeboxes full of no-doubt-delightful surprises. Meanwhile, her young students get ready, too: "Adam Krupp wakes up. Brenda Heath brushes her teeth. Christopher Beaker finds his sneaker." Author Joseph Slate matches each animal character with a letter of the alphabet, and readers can flip to the back to discover that Adam is an alligator, Brenda is a beaver, and Christopher is a cat--and so on, through the more obscure animals such as the quokka and the Uakari monkey. Youngsters will relish the scenes of school preparation, adorned by rhyming text: a mother iguana dragging her son Ian Lowe (who cries "I won't go!") out the front door, and the little vole Vicki Densel biting her pencil. And of course Miss Bindergarten is the kindergarten teacher we either remember fondly or wish we had. The final back-to-school classroom scene explodes with love and pride and the smell of freshly sharpened pencils. This book was about rhyming, so we played a little game...matching each student to the correct school bus. Activity cards (buses and students) found at Kids Soup. Matching rhyming pictures. This handout was included in the Unit from Storytime From A to Z book. The letter in the unit was "k", so they created this cute tissue paper letter k. Letter K template found here. We didn't have time to complete the following activity, but Izzie enjoyed doing it at home! An assortment of craft sticks with sound pictures, choose one, if starts with letter K sound, place in the kangaroo's pouch. Activity from Kids Soup...highly recommend membership!
Our Roy Orbison pronoun practice was great fun, but I could tell at the end my son was still a little foggy on how pronouns are used. This activity is meant to clear up the confusion. It uses my son’s interest in space to excite him about learning pronouns! First, we read the Grammar Tales book The Planet Without Pronouns by Justin McCory Martin. This book was EXACTLY what I needed to explain just how helpful and useful pronouns are. The main character, Stanley, notices when talking to the residents of planet Krimular that they don’t use pronouns! He gives his buddy Zik a lesson explaining, “Pronouns are small words such as I, you, me, her, or him. … They are used in place of nouns to make sentences simpler. Think of them as ‘shortcut’ words.” Ah, yes, shortcut words, why hadn’t I thought to explain them that way? This was something my son could relate to! When my son finished reading (He’s a level K reader so I helped him with some of the more challenging words), I gave him some folded practice cards and a “to the moon and back” scorecard. His job was to pick a card, read the front, and either replace the highlighted word(s) or add the pronoun if it was absent. Once he’d done this, he opened the flap on the card and if he got it right, he could move the rocket ship one line closer to the moon. When he got to the moon, he rotated the rocket ship around, kept practicing, and headed back to Earth. He loved this activity and wanted to continue practicing with the leftover cards once his space journey had ended. Success! Directions to Make it Yourself Download my PDF of the pronoun practice cards and “to the moon and back” scorecard. The pages in the file are ordered so you need to print page 1, flip it over and print page 2, and so on. Once printed on heavyweight cardstock, cut the cards, fold on the dotted line, and use a Exacto craft blade to cut the "V". Tuck the folded flap under the point on the V for each card. To make the scorecard, cut out the rocket ship and tab. Use an Exacto craft blade to cut out the rectangle for your rocket ship slider. Then poke holes in the rocket ship and tab with a brad. Put the tab behind the “to the moon and back” scorecard lining up the whole you punched inside the open slit you cut out. Put the brad in the rocket ship, place on top of the scorecard and thread it through the tab that’s behind the scorecard. Spread the brad apart tightly. Now you’re ready to blast off!
