Poolside With Slim Aarons From the Caribbean to Italy and Mexico to Monaco, the photographs featured in the extravagant Poolside with Slim Aarons whisks the reader away to an exclusive club where taste, style, luxury, and grandeur prevail.
Glamorous fashions, personalities, and places captured by iconic photographer Slim Aarons in this collection from curator Shawn Waldron and author Kate Betts. Foreword by Jonathan Adler Slim Aarons, at least according to the man himself, did not photograph fashion: “I didn’t do fashion. I did the people in their clothes that became the fashion.” But despite what he claimed, Aarons’s work is indelibly tied to fashion. Aarons’s incredibly influential photographs of high society and socialites being unambiguously themselves are still a source of inspiration for modern day style icons. Slim Aarons: Style showcases the photographs that both recorded and influenced the luminaries of the fashion world. This volume features early black-and-white fashion photography, as well as portraits of the fashionable elite—like Jacqueline de Ribes, C.Z. Guest, Nan Kempner, and Marisa Berenson—and those that designed the clothes, such as Oscar de la Renta, Emilio Pucci, Mary McFadden, and Lilly Pulitzer. Featuring some never-before-seen images and detailed captions written by fashion historians, Slim Aarons: Style is a collection of the photographer’s most stylish work.

In doing so, he captured a golden age of wealth, privilege, beauty and leisure that occurred alongside—but quite separate from—the cultural and political backdrop of the second half of the Twentieth Century. "Attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places" was how the late photographer Slim Aarons described his main preoccupation. It's a formula that stands the test of time: One of Aarons's jet set photographs — scenes of aristos at leisure he documented from the 40's through the 80's — was just at the center of the designer Thom Browne's spring 2017 show; there will be an Aarons exhibit opening at New York's Staley-Wise gallery later this month; and there is a new book, Slim Aarons: Women, by Aarons' former longtime assistant, Laura Hawk (the fifth volume in Abrams' Aarons collection). This edition spotlights the beauties who populated his opulent scenes, everyone from Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe to his daughter and wife, alongside a bevy of princesses and socialites.

A waiter serves fruit to bathers, including socialite, Louisa del Musso (kneeling), at the Lido in Venice, Italy, 1957. (Photo by Slim Aarons/Hulton Archive/Getty Images) Slim Aarons (1916-2006) worked mainly for society publications photographing "attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places." Taking pictures of the rich and famous both before and after serving as a photographer for the US military magazine Yank during World War II. His work has been included in the publications Town and Country, Holiday, Venture, LIFE and most well known for his photograph Poolside Glamour. Closely aligned with Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Aarons declined to join them in the founding of Magnum, leaving behind the world of black and white for sun-dazed glamour and frivolity. His intimate portrayals of the in crowd and jet set are rich in the wit and charisma that afforded Aarons such incomparable access to the highest of societies. Print is available in 16 x 16", 20 x 20", and 30 x 30" IFAC is proud to represent Aarons' vast collection of negatives and transparencies, which span six decades of a lifestyle many dream of but few experience. Expert darkroom work on the original negative allow us to print his images up to the largest photographic sizes, inviting us to step into these dazzling images of the good life.
