- Art print with an illustration of a big animal Illustration of a big wild animal in brown and with black dots. The perfect print for the kids room or playroom. Combine with another animal prints of a quote.
The image above comes from my previous entry E- manuscripts: The Hours of Catherine of Cleves: a Wild Man (woodwose) creeps up to the rabbit and he is about get it; the rabbit hears him and looks back. I assume the rabbit escapes. Wild Man pops up in the manuscripts here and there as a monster hairy figure living in the forest. It is not dissimilar to the contemporary myths of Bigfoot and yeti. Medieval forests, however, were bigger, denser and darker and there were indeed real and surreal dark things that dwelled along the beasts: robbers, outcasts, hermits, spirits, trolls, boges. Pagan ritual were very much alive , just merging with Christian beliefs and fears. The man above looks more like a naked hairy Santa, then a monster. Here a more images of very different representations. Bibliothèque nationale de France, Français 9342, detail of f158v (wild men). Jean Wauquelin, Histoire d’Alexandre. Bruges, mid-15th century. Beinecke MS 287, detail of f. 80r. Hours, Use of Rome. End of the 15th century (Flanders). Wild Man is both human and animalistic. It is the inferior uncivilised "other", that can also represent unfamiliar people of the other lands. Alexander encounter the Wildman in his voyage to Asia, from a medieval manuscript of the Alexander Romance @Biliothèque nationale de France) Wild Man fits well into the medieval fascination with the liminal. 15th century manuscript illustration of Nebuchanezzar, the Babylonian king from the Old Testament Book of Daniel, 'During that time he lived away from others, eating grass for food and letting his hair and nails grow wild. In the the Middle Ages some mad persons were allowed to go free, and they usually drifted to the woods in order to live unmolested.' ___________________________________________________________________________________ A three meter wild man by Ron Mueck in Tate.
Documenting this book turned out to be a larger project that I anticipated it to be. As is turns out, I found 3 versions of the book from 1906. At first glance, they all seem to have the same illustrations and stories..... not so. I first began by collecting pictures from an online source. Read the full text of this online version. As I collected, I noticed that some of the pictures were in color while other seemed to be just done with black ink and pen. This didn't surprise me as I had learned about similar books of the time and the increased cost of publishing in color. I was enchanted by Margaret Ely Webb's drawings and found a version to purchase on eBay. When I got my book I was surprised to find that ALL the illustrations were in color. I began to scan them and blend the best versions for the blog. Somehow I purchased another version of the book which turned out to be in pristine condition and I began scanning better copies of some of the rougher versions from my first book. I then made the discovery that this version had different colored pictures. As it turns out, you will see that I have included up to four different variations of some of the illustrations. Scanning turned out to be interesting as some of the pictures that I thought were just black and white turned out to have light blue or yellow when scanned. I scanned all the illustrations at 600dpi. I hope this does not cause the pictures to load too slowly on your computer. I wanted to scan them at high resolution so that other could use them as they seem fit. It might look a little eclectic as they display in this blog. Most of the pages in the book are now a light sepia brown. With photo editing software I tried to clean them up and present them as close to their original color as possible. This made for quite the task as if I lighted the page color to show the true color, it often faded out to not show the lighter pale colors. It is very common when scanning to have letter and printing from the previous page show through to the desired side. I was usually successful in lighten the scanned image to eliminate the unwanted printing but at the same time, it would lighten the desired image color. An interesting and challenging job to balance all the needed changes. So, enjoy and let me know what you think and how you are using these beautiful illustrations. My first purchased version. A copy in very poor condition. My second version in pristine condition.

For an art-viewing experience unlike any other, enjoy Florine Stettheimer's paintings. Stettheimer created an aesthetic that was all her own, depicting modern scenes of wealthy Jazz Age society in a colorful and festive style.

As we've walked with the apostles in the Gospels in recent weeks, we've witnessed Jesus command the wind and sea, and order a little girl to arise from the dead. But He seems to meet His match in His hometown of Nazareth. Today's Gospel is blunt: "He was not able to perform any mighty de
