In addition to his penchant for realism, Swiss artist Till Rabus has a keen eye for arranging inanimate objects in provoking ways. The artist combines these two skills in his strange still lifes, where ordinary, discarded objects are found in mysterious compositions that play with symmetry and saturated colors. Rabus eradicates any signs of human […]

JIM DINE (1935- ) Jim Dine's artwork reflect his skill as a draftsman and his virtuosity as a painter. Frequently, these skills are combined, but more often he has chosen to separate them so that some prints dramatically display his linear techniques and others his power as a painter. A modern master of printmaking, Jim Dine has long combined Pop-informed imagery with a highly personal point of view. He has created objects which are privately symbolic such as his series of Hearts which refers to his wife Nancy, and his Bathrobe studies, for instance, are progressive self-portraits. Original Edition Lithograph on Arches paper, 1971. Paper Size: 30.75" x 22." Signed in pencil. Published by Professional Prints with The National Galerie Berlin. Excellent Condition; never framed or matted.
Andrea Landini 1847-1935 | Italian The Letter Signed “A. Landini” (lower right) Oil on canvas A red-robed cardinal chuckles at the letter in his hand in this oil on canvas by the Italian painter Andrea Landini. The vibrantly hued piece illustrates the artist’s genius at rendering charming narratives in remarkable detail. Entitled The Letter, the work is a superb example of Landini's technical virtuosity — from the finely carved and upholstered chair to the neoclassical painting in the background, every detail is meticulously depicted. Such works satirizing the clergy would have been severely censured just a generation earlier. Yet, by the time Landini picked up the brush, the European public had grown discontent with the hypocrisy of the clergy, many of whom enjoyed lavish lifestyles. Cardinal paintings such as this became highly popular during the period, and Landini emerged alongside Georges Croegaert, Marcel Brunery and Jehan Georges Vibert as the leading painters of the genre. Born in Florence in 1847, Andrea Landini trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, first under the animal painter Riccardo Pasquini and later with religious painter Antonio Ciseri. Landini quickly made a name for himself as a painter of portraits, attracting clients such as the Signora Guerrazzi of Livorno, the contessa Lavinia Bocca, the writer signora Elena Landini Ruffino and the Princess of Wales. While his portraits made him a success during his lifetime, today he is best remembered for his highly detailed genre scenes, and particularly his Cardinal paintings such as this. This is an original antique book illustration taken from Leighton's most sought after set of prints from 'The Farmer's Year' published by Collins in 1933. This seminal work included 12 large wood engravings illustrating various aspects of farming life and designed specifically to show off the technical and artistic virtuosity of the engraver with a series of large and visually stunning images. Clare Leighton was one of a number of woodblock artists in this period when the genre was at its most popular for illustration of printed matter. This print is from the actual first edition, not the US version or subsequent printings. Later reprints on poorer quality paper (and even modern giglee prints) are passed off as genuine but none of these these will be as defined as the imprint offered by the original woodblock. These prints are full page without marks or text/print on the rear (but for the print's title at centre-no show through.) Very good clean and crisp condition with no text or distracting marks. The paper is good quality heavy paper. There is light creasing to the corners of the border which would be amply hidden once mounted. There may be light spots in the border only. This is an original 1930s print so paper has slightly creamy/yellow appearance but this lends the overall image a nice vintage aspect. Unmounted. Photo 2 is for information as to source and does not form part of the sale. Clare Leighton (1898-1989). An English/American artist, writer and illustrator, best known for her wood engravings, trained at the Slade School of Fine Art and the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where she studied wood engraving under Noel Rooke. She emigrated to America in 1939. Over the course of a long and prolific career, she wrote and illustrated numerous books praising the virtues of the countryside and the people who worked the land. A leading young Italian semiologist scrutinizes today's cultural phenomena and finds the prevailing taste to be \"neo-baroque\"--characterized by an appetite for virtuosity, frantic rhythms, instability, poly-dimensionality, and change. Omar Calabrese locates a \"sign of the times\" in an amazing variety of literary, philosophical, artistic, musical, and architectural forms, from the Venice Biennale through the \"new science\" to television series, video games, and \"zapping\" with the remote control device from channel to channel! Calabrese admits that he begins the book with a refusal to distinguish between \"Donald Duck and Dante.\" Avoiding hierarchies or ghettos among works, he takes his readers on a fast-paced expedition through contemporary culture that closes with an elegant essay on evaluation and classical form. According to Calabrese, the enormous quantity of narrative now being produced has led to a new situation: everything has already been said, and everything has already been written. The only way of avoiding saturation has been to turn to a poetics of repetition. The author shows that pleasure in texts is now produced by tiny variations, and a certain kind of citation from other works has taken on a central importance that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. In describing this development, and others shared by both avant-garde and mass media, he makes us aware of the rapid shrinkage in the once ample space between \"highbrow\" and \"lowbrow.\" Originally published in 1992.
