Ecotarium: Reviews from families visiting Ecotarium. From the moment I heard about the Ecotarium located in Worcester, Massachusetts about 50 minutes from downtown Boston, I assumed it would be cool. As we pulled into the parking lot and I saw the signage saying it was a National Geographic partner, I knew it would be cool. I wasn’t wrong. SCIENCE MUSEUM The Ecotarium is an interesting mix of science museum and nature center. My son Will, 6, loved the top floor which currently features an exhibit entitled The Arctic Next Door: Mount Washington. Through this exhibit, kids and adults alike can explore the wilder weather patterns and geological formations of Mount Washington. We particularly had a blast playing in the Hurricane simulator and learning how to direct wind towards a wall of brightly colored windmills. NATURE CENTER The Ecotarium is also a great nature center featuring a variety of wild animals that cannot be returned to due injury or human socialization. The most famous of these animals is a fox named Sox who was raised by humans before finding his way to the Ecotarium. Sox perks up whenever he hears humans and is fun to say hello too. In addition to Sox, there are a variety of animals including a possum, a porcupine, and birds. OUTDOOR PLAY The coolest part of the Ecotarium is by far the giant outdoor space that is perfect for exploring and getting dirty while learning. The highlight of the outdoor space is the Nature Explore Outdoor Exhibit. What used to be just a playground has been transformed into a large space where children can learn all about themselves and nature. There are climbing nets, sand to play with and even a stream to run through. Kids can spend hours in the space playing with dirt and exploring real nature. The Ecotarium hosts a variety of crafts and workshops in the space exploring nature’s music, art with things found in nature and a stage area where visitors are invited to let loose and perform. What struck me most about this outdoor area was that it was a return to the simpler childhood most of us had. Parents put away their cell phones, took off their socks and got into the dirt with their kids. Everyone around us enjoyed themselves. The Nature Explore Exhibit is worth a visit to the Ecotarium alone. UPCOMING EXHIBITS As summer ramps up, there are a few really cool exhibits opening up at the Ecotarium in May. The one that really caught my eye was Bubbles!, an outdoor exhibit featuring bubbles of every shape and size. Kids and adults get to play together making bubbles and checking out how they work and what colors they make. The exhibit features a bunch of wands and ways to make bubbles and even lets kids get inside of one. COST The Ecotarium is $14 per adult and $10 per child. Children under 2 are admitted for free. When you visit the Ecotarium, it will become apparent why National Geographic choose to partner with this museum and science center. It is the perfect place to introduce children to lands and places they haven’t yet visited and help them explore their local habitat at the same time. This review is based on a complimentary visit to Ecotarium I received no other compensation and these opinions are entirely my own.

Hamburg-based architecture photographer Mitja Schneehage isn’t interested in places that are conventionally beautiful; instead, he mines for artistry in the banal, functional environments that most of us pass by without a second glance. In parking lots, he find moments of elegance and minimalism.
From sun-up to sundown and well into the night, Downtown Phoenix provides a truly unique urban environment. The project was a comprehensive wayfinding program that included wayfinding analysis and the design and planning of gateways, vehicular directional, parking lot trailblazers and pedestrian signage. MERJE also developed designs for the downtown visitor center, banners, and a manned ambassadors kiosk. The program meets the functional requirements traffic engineering criteria, along with the effects of the arid desert environment.
One might not think that parking lots, crosswalks, and other broad asphalt expanses would be particularly amenable to artwork, but for Montreal-based artist and activist Roadsworth (aka Peter Gibson, previously) every white or yellow traffic paint stripe is a new opportunity. Although his work on the road is what he’s most known for—turning parking stripes into dandelions or urging drivers to get out of their cars and onto bicycles—he’s also branched out into other mediums, creating large scale installations and working on mural commissions.
