East of the rugged Sierra Nevada in California's Owens Valley lies Manzanar. Founded in 1910 as a fruit-growing colony, it was named in Spanish for the fragrant apple orchards that once filled its spectacularly scenic landscape. Owens Valley Paiute lived there first, followed by white homesteaders and ranchers. But with the onset of World War II came a new identity as the first of 10 \"relocation centers\" hastily built in 1942 to house 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry, two-thirds of them American citizens, removed from the West Coast. In the face of upheaval and loss, Manzanar's 10,000 confined residents created parks, gardens, and a functioning wartime community within the camp's barbed-wire-enclosed square mile of flimsy barracks. Today Manzanar National Historic Site commemorates this and all of Manzanar's unique communities.
From petroglyphs to castles carved into hilltops, explore our night sky through our ancestors at these amazing archaeological sites.
On the search for petroglyphs huffed and puffed up a steep slope just North of Bishop. Having to stop to take a picture (meaning out of shape and needing to catch my breath) it was impossible to notice it was an incredibly beautiful day. God seems to have an unlimited palette of colors to paint with! So I took the wrong trail at first so I huffed up this slope twice! Does not even look like it was 24 degrees does it! Did not find what I was looking for so will be back again. Hope it will be just as colorful next time! Thanks for stopping by comments and favs greatly appreciated!

Kendra Atleework grew up in Swall Meadows, in the Owens Valley of the Eastern Sierra Nevada, where annual rainfall averages five inches and in drought years measures closer to zero. Kendra's family raised their children to thrive in this harsh landscape, forever at the mercy of wildfires, blizzards, and gale-force winds. Most of all, the Atleework children were raised on unconditional love and delight in the natural world. But it came at a price. When Kendra was six, her mother was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, and she died when Kendra was sixteen. Her family fell apart, even as her father tried to keep them together. Kendra took flight from her bereft family, escaping to the enemy city of Los Angeles, and then Minneapolis, land of all trees, no deserts, no droughts, full lakes, water everywhere you look. But after years of avoiding the pain of her hometown, she realized that she had to go back, that the desert was the only place she could live. Like Wild, Miracle Country is a story of flight and return, bounty and emptiness, and the true meaning of home. But it also speaks to the ravages of climate change and its permanent destruction of the way of life in one particular town.

"But if ever you come beyond the borders as far as the town that lies in a hill dimple at the foot of Kearsarge, never leave it until you have knocked at the door of the brown house under the willow-tree at the end of the village street, and there you shall have such news of the land, of its trails and what is astir in them, as one lover of it can give to another. This was the shot that never should have happened! We did not decide to go up to Mammoth until the last minute. Even though I had taken Monday off I had not one but two conference calls this morning. The streets were still white with snow and the tires on the Tahoe are getting to the end of their life. It was 24 degrees and overcast. I remember my friend Jean Day's moonlight shot of Hot Creek and it gave me inspiration. Went out shooting. www.flickr.com/photos/2boys2day/8227897245/ Shot in one spot and drove to the other I had in mind. Took the conference first conference call in the car on dirt road with nothing but beauty all around. Shot some more. I knew when I took this series I had a chance of a real winner. So glad I didn't give in and just stay in that really comfy warm bed. Thanks for stopping by.. Comments and favs always appreciated.
Check out this unique dry waterfall made of volcanic rock located right off Highway 395. It's provides beautiful views of the volcanic area.
The monsoonal flow drawn up from Mexico the last several days also created dramatic clouds (and intense thunderstorms) over the White Mountains as well as over the Sierra (see my previous post for what THAT looked like!). This was taken late in the afternoon just east of Bishop. Right after I took this, we drove to the ancient bristlecone pine forest--right up into the storm you see here--and some of the nastiest weather I've seen in awhile. Didn't get any shots of the ancient trees, but it was strangely beautiful to be up at 11,500 feet in the middle of all that turbulent weather.
