These colorful lichens are Red Fruited Pixie Cups (Cladonia pleurota), found at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Orange County, NC. Based on online herbaria records, this species is rare in the Piedmont with most NC records being from higher elevations in the mountains. Piedmont records include collections from unusual habitats such as granitic flatrocks and from a rare Piedmont bog community. These were growing on a cooler north-facing slope under Mountain Laurel. Although the red of the apothecia may appear to be oversaturated, they really are very intensely scarlet. DOF was achieved by focus stacking 8-9 images. Since this may be a vulnerable disjunct population, I've only marked a generic location for the Natural Area on the map.

Habitat: Oakmoss is widespread throughout Europe, North Africa, Asia and North America. Description: Evernia prunastri or oakmoss is a lichen of the Parmeliaceae family. The genus Evernia contains about ten different species. The thalli (the vegetative body of a lichen) are bush-shaped and grow together to form large clumps. The thallus is flat and highly branched. It grows on trunks and branches of shrubs and deciduous trees like oaks, fruit trees, and blackthorn but also sometimes on pine trees. It is green to light whitish-green

Seen on Mt Rainier's Green Lake Trail. I think it is liverwort, but I will never learn my moss, lichen, and liverwort botany. I suspect the red spots are the spore capsules. But I could be wrong, who knows. [later note: I was wrong! It's not liverwort, but lungwort lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria, I think]
