Fluency is an important components of reading, yet it is often neglected. What type of activities could I plan that were NOT teacher directed? To improve fluency, students need to read over and over which takes time. Time is in short supply for most teachers. Some parents listen to their children read at home, but not ALL. How could I fix this problem to ensure ALL of my students were getting enough practice? The answer was partner fluency checks. You can try a free partner fluency check. Teachers who downloaded the file above asked if I had more activities like the ones in the file. I recently made a Kindergarten-1st grade Fluency Check file and a 2nd-3rd grade Fluency Check file. Color Code the fluency cards by reading levels so you can quickly see the difference without looking at the bottom of the card. Punch a hole and put the cards on a ring for easy storage. The reading passages come in two formats - fluency cards and comprehension printables. More formats means more times reading the same passage which improves fluency. There are also comprehension signs. Punch a hole and put the signs on a ring. Use them to ask questions after a read aloud or with your small group. Comprehension signs are perfect for quick checks after a read aloud. Put the comprehension signs on a ring. Keep the ring where you read to your class. Set up a literacy center using the signs and comprehension passages. This is a quick center to set up. Reading the passages in different formats will improve students' fluency. Partner fluency checks and literacy centers are NOT teacher directed activities. Perfect fluency activities for busy teachers! I currently have the following Fluency Check files available: Kindergarten and 1st Grade Fluency Check Fluency and Comprehension Passages Volume 1 Volume 2 Volume 3 Christmas themed passages Bundle - Volume 1 & 2 2nd and 3rd Grade Fluency Check Fluency and Comprehension Passages Volume 1 Volume 2 Sources to make my blog post graphics can be found HERE. Don't let your literature anthology dictate the short stories you read with your middle school and high school students. This is a set of SIX decodable books that focus on closed, short vowel words with floss words (ff, ll, ss, zz), the /all/ sound, suffix -s, and suffix -es. Your students will love being the readers AND the illustrators of these adorable decodables! The format of these books require students to focus on what we want them to focus on- the graphemes on the page- not the pictures, as they decode text. Click here to check out the preview file. Teachers who have embarked on a journey into the science of reading are making exciting, positive changes within their classrooms! As a fellow lifelong learner, I applaud your bravery and courage to continue to seek out resources and instructional strategies that will best meet the needs of the readers within your classroom. Moving away from instructional strategies and materials that utilize the three-cueing systems is a vital step teachers need to take in order to put the science of reading research into practice. As a reading teacher and literacy coach, I have a lot of students who come to me with a habit of relying heavily on pictures to decode unknown words. While pictures are certainly important in books, I found myself covering them up so that students would stop guessing unknown words! When it comes to learning how to read, we want students to focus on connecting their understanding of sounds to the written letters on the page in order to decipher unknown words. With this need in mind, the decode and draw series was born! These simple, short printable books help students concentrate on the words first. After they practice reading the text, they can illustrate each page within the book. The final page of each book contains word work practice. The result is an interactive decodable book that boosts word recognition, comprehension, fluency, and word mapping skills. I hope you and your students enjoy these books just as much as mine have! "Tell me more about these decodable books. What makes them different than typical decodable books?" Each of the six decodable books contains five pages of controlled text. One book for each of the following phonics skills has been written: three books that focus on floss words (ff, ll, ss, zz), one /all/ book, one suffix -s book (with the /s/ and /z/ sound), and one suffix -es book. A complete list of the titles, phonics focus, and the high-frequency words that are found within each book are also included in the preview file and in the overview file of the purchased download. The text in these books are controlled. The only patterns or sounds you will find in the books are words with the current phonics focus, or words previously introduced in my previously released Decode & Draw Series: CVC WORDS and DIGRAPHS. The final page (which is on the back of each book) contains a word work component. Students will say each picture and touch the sound boxes to tap out the sounds in the words. Students will then spell and write the words on the lines. The word mapping page follows the targeted phonics skill that the book featured. The word work page helps students make the connection between reading the words and writing the words with the targeted phonics skill. "Who are these books for?" Use these decodables with any student who is ready to begin blending and reading closed, short vowel floss words, /all/ words, and short vowel words with suffix -s and suffix -es. "When and how can I best use these decodable books in my classroom?" The preview page will give you a big list of ideas, but the possibilities are endless! These books can be used at the small group table, as a whole-group phonics activity while reading each page together, or as independent work. Personally, it is the independent practice that I struggle with this year in my classroom. Finding independent work that is meaningful can be challenging. These books are PERFECT for this! After your students have started practicing digraphs with you explicitly, they can apply their reading skills by reading and illustrating one page at a time. Being able to check their picture on each page provides you with comprehension accountability and the perfect way to jump into a discussion with students. "Are the books difficult to assemble? One of my biggest hurdles as a teacher is TIME!" (Raises hand) Fellow reading teacher, here! I get it. One of the reasons I don't use the printable decodable books on some other commercial websites is because I cannot figure them out ha! I've made these books super simple to put together, and they are all printer-friendly. They don't even use a lot of ink because your students are the ones who will become the illustrators of these books! Talk about ownership and meaningful reading! I hope you love this new reading resource as much as I do! Miss DeCarbo Copyright 2022 All Rights Reserved

Looking for new, free texts for teaching figurative language? This post has short stories, and other short texts your students will love!
Using Pictures to Teach Figurative Language allows you to teach and review figurative language using pictures AND teach students how to apply their skills to short reading passages! With these 15 printable and digital pages, students will have the opportunity to: Observe a picture and make inferences, ask questions, make predictions, etc. Apply their knowledge of figurative language by choosing a sentence that correctly uses figurative language to describe the picture. Write their own examples of figurative language describing the picture Find examples of figurative language in a short passage. The following types of figurative language are included: Similes Metaphors Personification Hyperbole Idioms There are THREE printable pages for each skill (a total of 15 pages of figurative language practice). There are four components to EACH page of this resource: Observe It: This section includes the picture with plenty of white space around it. The white space is for students to make literal AND inferential observations. Take as many notes as you can, encourage students to stretch their thinking, and watch their inference skills grow with EVERY picture you observe! Examples of observations are included. Choose It: In this section, students are required to choose a sentence that using figurative language to describe the picture. BE CAREFUL! These have been designed to include many different types of figurative language AND figurative language that does not make sense in the context of the picture. Write It: Students get to put their figurative language skills to the test and write their own examples for topics depicted in the picture! Apply It: This section has a short story that loosely relates to the same topic shown in the picture and requires students to pick out figurative language. Why use pictures to teach reading skills? I have thoughtfully designed these resources to align with best practices in reading comprehension instruction. This resource allows you to teach and review reading skills using pictures in an approachable, engaging, and easy-to-understand format. Applying reading skills to pictures requires students to think critically about the skill at hand. After using the picture to teach the skill, the resource transitions students to short tasks and reading passages where they apply the same skill in a different way. It prepares students for the cognitively demanding task of applying skills to authentic texts, such as picture books and novels. There is documented value in observing a picture and making inferences based on observations (and learning the difference between the two!), asking questions, making predictions, etc., and this resource does just that! The Finer Details: Printing: The images print well in color OR black and white. I do encourage you to project or show a color image for students so that they can make even more observations and inferences. Answer Keys: I have included an answer key for each resource, but PLEASE NOTE: students should be encouraged to come up with their own original answers. Since many of the tasks are open-ended, there are many justifiable answers. These tasks are meant to encourage kids to think outside the box! You will be amazed at what they come up with. Grouping Use: These printables are perfect for whole group or small group instruction, morning work, literacy centers, and more! I strongly suggest working through several of these pages as a whole group before allowing students to work independently on them-- particularly the "OBSERVE" section. Grade Levels: Ideal for Grades 3+ and Enrichment or Whole-Class 2nd grade. I have personally used these with 2nd grade through 5th grade. The options are endless! Digital and Projectable Access: In addition to the original printable version, there are TWO options for digital access for EACH of the four sets above. The original version that is identical to the printable pages is still included, but this resource also includes an interactive, easy-to-read and navigate Google Slides version! This digital version is also perfect for projecting as you teach a whole class lesson or small group. This resource also includes a cover page to make this into a practice booklet, additional resource links to my SEVEN+ blog posts about using pictures to teach reading skills, and observation samples to help you teach the initial lessons. Are you teaching your students to read and understand descriptive passages? If so, this activity would make the perfect supplement to your lesson. This download contains two activities pertaining to the descriptive text. On page one, students will read a short passage about penguins. With a partner or small group, the students will turn and talk about the passage using guiding questions. Page two can be used for independent practice, in which students will read a short passage about sharks and answer a few multiple choice questions. Example questions from pages one and two: Page 1, Turn and Talk: 1. Circle some descriptive words or phrases that help you visualize the information in your mind. 2. Looking closely at the first paragraph, what do the author’s words help the reader understand? Discuss. 3. Why do you think the author used the words “biting” and “whipping” in the first paragraph? Discuss. Page 2, Independent Practice: 1. What makes this passage descriptive? 2. Which of the following would be a descriptive detail from the passage? 3. How does the photograph contribute to the text? In other words, how does the photograph help the reader understand the passage?
