When it first came out, Ophelia (2018) was called a feminist take on Hamlet. That’s not a bad read of the movie because it does re-tell Shakespeare’s play from the point of view of its …
Figurine of Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Glazed earthenware, Staffordshire, modelled on an engraving of Perdita in Tallis's Shakespeare Gallery, 1852-1853
Shakespeare's Ophelia is one of the most popular and recognizable faces in art. Take a look at nine different versions of the tragic heroine.
This detailed, advanced handout and worksheet is designed to help students in their study of William Shakespeare’s brilliant tragedy Hamlet in particular, Act 4, Scenes 5-7 of the play. The worksheets focus on the character of Ophelia, and her mental state and (apparent) suicide at the end of Act 4, Scene 7. I usually teach this tragedy as an IB English A: Literature or Language & Literature Higher Level Text, but it can be seamlessly integrated into any upper school / high school curriculum. The handout includes: Comprehension questions to check understanding of Act 4, Scenes 5-7. Close reading & language analysis questions for Act 4, Scenes 5-7. Information text about Ophelia and her mental state of mind and role as a character in Act 4, Scenes 5-7. Close reading & extract analysis activity, using the iconic passage where Ophelia confronts Claudius, Gertrude, and Laertes and hands out her flowers. The extract analysis questions guide students’ analysis of her mental state as well as the symbolic significance of the various flowers she hands out. Critical Essay entitled “Ophelia - why does she go mad?”, to allow students to dig deeper into the topic, with a particular focus on comparing Hamlet’s feigned madness with Ophelia’s “real” madness. The essay also contains follow-up questions for further analysis. MODEL ANSWERS for all comprehension + close reading questions as well as for the extract analysis activity, including explanations of the flower symbolism, character analysis of Ophelia as well as further commentary about her role in the play. PS: I’ll be teaching this unit very soon, and so this is very much a work in progress / will mean that I update my other Hamlet resources. Should anything not be a expected, do let me know via email rather than leaving a bad review. Enjoy, and thanks in advance!
