As part of a new exhibition at Black Book Gallery in Denver, artists Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker (aka. Hari & Deepti), have created a new body of work titled “Oh, The Places You Will Go!” The artist couple were inspired by recent travels through Moab, Utah and Yellowstone, Wyoming, and transformed elements of their adventures into delicately hand-cut paper sculptures infused with mythology and science fiction. Allison May Kiphuth (previously) shrinks the expansive landscapes found throughout the eastern United States into picturesque dioramas brimming with natural life. Through layered watercolor and ink renderings, the Maine-based artist creates a mix of quiet forest scenes and ocean habitats often under a dark, nighttime sky. She then stacks the outfitted wooden boxes, blending the marine and land-based pieces in varying positions that create new ecosystems with every combination. Although Kiphuth derives much of her subject matter from the area around her home, she shares that experiencing new scenes is essential to her practice. More

In Toronto-based artist Talwst's dioramas, antique ring boxes become tiny theaters where spectacularly detailed scenes unfold on a miniature scale. The

These Compact Worlds by Kendal Murray are charming, mixed media miniature narratives created. literally, within mirrored compacts.
Gdy Jezus wszedł do Kafarnaum, zwrócił się do Niego setnik i prosił Go, mówiąc: «Panie, sługa mój leży w domu sparaliżowany i bardzo cierpi». Rzekł mu Jezus: «Przyjdę i uzdrowię go». – a idzie; drugiemu: „Przyjdź!” – a przychodzi; a słudze: „zrób to!” – a robi». Gdy Jezus to usłyszał, zadziwił się i rzekł do tych, którzy szli za Nim: «Zaprawdę, powiadam wam: U nikogo w Izraelu nie znalazłem tak wielkiej wiary. Lecz powiadam wam: Wielu przyjdzie ze Wschodu i z Zachodu i zasiądą do stołu z Abrahamem, Izaakiem i Jakubem w królestwie niebieskim».

It’s been over a year since we last checked in with artist duo Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker of Hari & Deepti, who construct elegantly cut paper dioramas inside backlit light boxes. The medium is perfect for depicting the depth of thick forests, pools of water, or subterranean caves inhabited by spirits and fantastic creatures. Over the last year Hari & Deepti relocated from Denver to Mumbai where they just completed work for their first European show at Blank Space Gallery in Oslo titled ‘We Are All Made of Stars.’ Like previous exhibitions the event was held in a darkened gallery with the only light emitted from their artwork to better emphasize the themes of travel and adventure depicted in their light boxes. Most of us wouldn't know what to do with vintage ring boxes, apart maybe from putting small stuff in it. Talwst gave it some thought after a Paris market
Florida Mangroves 2012 I'm obsessed with paper art. So much that I taught it to my students. I started making my paper doll shadow boxes back in October of 2011. I was creating paper dolls inspired by my whimsical kooky characters and just wanted more. Sure paper dolls are fun but they lack adventure. Which inspired me to create my shadow boxes in which my paper dolls command the scene. Each main character moveable and poseable so the scene is always changing and the viewer is in control and actually asked to touch the art a taboo act in the art world. While making my shadow boxes I became curious about the world of paper art. It was something I had never looked into before and there are some crazy talented paper artists in this world. I stumbled upon the book PUSH by Jamie Zollars. Jamie Zollars also has a blog soley dedicated to paper http://paperforest.blogspot.com/ which will not take such a hit on your wallet and you can view many of the same artist featured in PUSH. Peter Callesen my favorite is unbelieveable he turns a boring white single sheet of paper into a masterpiece. Whether it be a skeleton sitting on a chair, a humming bird flying closely over a flower or a detailed castle with fallen bricks they are all individually amazing. **I do apologize for any grammar issues within this post or the many that follow. I am much more comfortable with a paint brush in my hands where I can paint my feelings. Writting has never been my strength so many apologies for what may come.****
