"This tutorial shows you the easiest way ever to make beautiful vintage inspired high-waisted trousers. Could you imagine that all you need to make the trousers of your dreams is a pair you already have and... some creativity? :) There is nothing more feminine, comfortable or flattering to your curves than well-tailored high-waist pants. You can wear them on any occasion, pair them with an elegant blouse, casual cardigan or a smart jacket. Play around with different materials to convey different styles. I've used light-weight twill for my (first) trousers. I'm absolutely in love with this material. It's warm, irons easily, doesn't crease and falls over the body in a lovely manner."

Ever since my first version of The Hibiscus Robe free sewing pattern, I've wanted to sew ten million more in every decadent fabric I can think of. Ombré charmeuse was dramatic and luxurious, but I can easily imagine cascading chiffon and billowing organza. Maybe even a voluminous faille to turn the robe into a dress? For this redux, I opted for one of my fabric faves: a stunning floral embroidered mesh. From boudoir to bourgeois, this all-lace version of The Hibiscus is sure to bring the drama.

Subtle textures of this cozy wrap were inspired by the mesmerizing architecture of Florence. The way light and shadow bring to life the intricate marble carvings has left me speechless many times. This pattern is easy and entertaining to knit, as you have a variety of textures to play with as you go. Step-by-step instructions and a video tutorial for bobbles are included in the pattern. Cocoon is knit completely seamless and requires no sewing or grafting. You start working the pattern similarly to a (really wide) bottom-up sweater in the round up to the sleeves. They are added to the body with a provisional cast on. Then, front and back pieces are worked flat separately and joined using three needle bind off. The cocoon is finished off with the sleeve cuffs knit in the round. Recommended yarn: solid, semi-solid or kettle dyed, as it will show more details of the stitch patterns. You can skip using mohair if you wish. Note that it helps the cocoon to hold its shape better.

Dolman sleeves are an easy-sew option when you want more coverage than a sleeveless dress or top without the added time and effort of sewing set-in sleeves. This sleeve type is a feature of both the girl's and women's Pearlie Dress & Peplum Top PDF Sewing Patterns. Some of you have mentioned that you find it tricky to turn and hem the sleeves when sewing your Pearlies, especially at the base of the armhole. If this is your least favourite step (and especially if you are working with a type of fabric that doesn’t allow you to manipulate the area easily) you should definitely give this method a go! In this tutorial, I’ve used a regular machine set on a stretch stitch to sew the side seams of the Bodice. The tight corner would make it hard to sew with an overlocker/serger but you could instead finish each side of the Bodice Front & Back with a zig-zag or overcasting stitch on your regular machine before sewing them together. The shoulder seams, skirt seams and neckband can, of course, be finished with an overlocker/serger as usual. Also, note that the pattern instructions (for the original gathered skirt Pearlie) have you attaching the Skirt Front & Back to the Bodice Front & Back before sewing the side seams. But in this example, having already sewn the Bodice side seams, I’m going to attach the skirt in the round. (Note: if using the circle skirt add-ons for the Pearlie Dress or Top you would, as per the instructions, be attaching the skirt in the round.) Step 1: MODIFY THE BODICE PATTERN PIECES The Bodice pattern pieces have you cutting the hem allowance horizontally out from the base of the armhole in a straight line. Instead of cutting them in that way, “mirror” the shape at the top of the side seam where it intersects with the armhole in a downward facing “v”. You will need to go 1cm (3/8”) down from the intersection. It would be best to do this by tracing off your pattern pieces with the revised shape and using it as your new template rather than just eye-balling it while cutting! Step 2: SEW SHOULDER SEAMS & SIDE SEAMS Sew the shoulder seams, finish seam and press. Sew the side seams using the stretch stitch on your machine. (You could mark the stitch lines with a soluble marker to help with accuracy). Use some sharp scissors to make a small snip half way into the corner of armhole where the stitch direction changes. Press seams out. Step 3: PRESS SEAM ALLOWANCE Press armhole hem all the way around. The photos shows you what it looks like from the inside. Step 4: TRIM EXCESS You can snip off the little bits of excess fabric that peep out from under the hem if you wish. Step 5: READY FOR HEMMING! You can see that the armhole hem allowance is sitting nicely even before stitching. This was our goal here, so YAAY! Your armholes are ready for hemming in your preferred way using a single or twin needle or zig-zag stitch.

Good Morning All!!! Playing around with darts is something I have enjoyed from the first moment I began to learn anything about pattern drafting. I'm sure you've seen pictures like the one below, interesting, but intimidating for sure. The picture gives ideas, but no instruction about how to actually move the darts around. It also seems rather dated. But, take a look at the picture below, a lovely vintage Vogue pattern, right out of the 1940's. The dress was lovely then and now. Now take a look at this dress. Same idea as above, but with a very modern take. Here's another idea on creating dart interest. Notice that the darts are actually sewn so that they show on the outside of the garment. The middle dart radiates to the bust point, but the other 2 are above and below the bust. Here's another idea of creating interest with darts. Once again they are sewn to the outside of the garment, and extra interest was added by inserting leather. To create the skirt below, the darts were incorporated into the princess seam lines. The darts along the outside panels offer nothing more than interest. The dress below shows how the darts of the bodice were divided and then formed to radiate from the waistline over the bust. The design was repeated in the skirt where the skirt waist darts were rotated to the side seam and then flared out over the hips. Here's another lovely example of radiating darts creating interest with this Decades of Style pattern. With the dress below, all of the darts were rotated to the shoulder and developed into tuck of flange, which works beautifully with the draped back. Below is a wonderful example of darts that create an illusion of fit. The top is a Marcy Tilton pattern. There is a slight amount of fit at the waistline, but the darts give the illusion of more fit than there actually is. Here's the flat drawing of the blouse. Just a lovely use of dart manipulation. You can find the pattern HERE if you are interested. It's a style that would look great on just about every body type. Here's another fabulous use of dart rotating. Darts were rotated to create the princess seam line and then moved into the neckline. A dress that at first looks very simple is really quite complicated. Great design! The dress is from the Reem Acra Spring 2013 collection. The entire collection, although 2 years is old, is lovely wand well worth a look. If you would like to give rotating darts a try, just google "dart manipulation" and you should be able to find how it is done. It's basically quite simple. Get a basic bodice, draw in a line where you would like a dart to be, cut on that line and then close up the existing dart. Like magic a new dart will open up! Hope your week is off to a lovely start! Rhonda
