Hiii, It is no secret that hexagons are everywhere these days, but that doesn't make them any less awesome. Here are some of my favorite hexagon pictures from out there in blogland: (I know that this one came from www.redpepperquilts.com, one of my absolute favorite blogs) I will consider this task practice for making the hexagon / honeycomb quilt on my Bucket List. I found various methods from a few different tutorials work best for me. To make the hexagons, I loosely followed a hexagon tutorial from Amy Gunson. I mainly used page 7 of her pdf for the correct sized cut-outs. See my process below: 1) First, I bought a hexagon template for rotary cutting my fabric. See template below: (Found at Joann's for $16.99 (but only $10.20 with a 40% off coupon)) 2) Then I decided which size hexagon I want to make. The template can allow for a finished 1 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch, 4 inch, and 5 inch hexagon. However, the tutorial from Amy provides a pattern for 2 inch hexagons, so I just went with that. See a closer look at the template below, hopefully you can actually read the numbers on the template. 3) Then I picked out some fabric scraps to cut up and pressed them flat. Note that to make a 2 inch finished hexagon, you need fabric that is at least 2.5 inches square (to account for a 1/4 seam allowance on all sides of the hex). See the fabric scraps I picked out: 3) After you have your fabrics all picked out, cut your scraps into 2.5 inch strips like below and press: (2.5 inch strips are all pressed and ready to go) 4) Then, using the hexagon tool, cut out the hexagon in 2 steps, both show below: STEP 1: Starting at the left side of the strip, line up the corner of the 2.5 inch hexagon template with the edge of the strip and, using a rotary cutter, cut along the right side of the hexagon template: (a closer look) (an even closer look) (Cut along the right side of the template) (finished step #1) STEP 2: Flip around the template with the cutting edge towards the left end of the fabric strip. Make sure to align the already cut corner in step 1 with the 2.5 inch corner of the template. Then, once everything is in line, rotary cut the left edge of the hexagon. (aligning the fabric with the template) (a finished cut hexagon) (continue to work across the strip with step 1) (and again with step 2) 5) YAY! Now you have the fabric for your hexagon: (YAYAY! Repeat with all your cut strips and you should have a few hexagons) 6) Now, using the template from Amy @ Badskirt, print out a few copies of page 7 (it has all the paper hexagons that measure 2 inches). It is recommended to use card stock, but I can't print on card stock from my home printer, so I just used regular printing paper: 7) Cut out all of the paper hexagons: 8) Start lining up the paper hexagon with your fabric hexagon. Now, you can see that the paper hexagons are about 1/4 inch smaller than your fabric. Match up your paper hexagons with your fabric hexagons by aligning the paper hexagon in the middle of the wrong side of the fabric. I affix a hair clip to hold the two together temporarily, it really helps with making a more accurate hex: 9) Now it's time for basting your hexagons. Using a needle and thread with a knot at the end (thread color doesn't matter at all), start on the edge directly left of the clip and fold the fabric edge over the paper (I find that it helps a little to press the folded edge with your fingers) Insert your needle into and out of the FABRIC ONLY, not the paper template. You will NEVER insert your needle into the PAPER or the FRONT OF THE HEXAGON. Move counter-clockwise around the hexagon, folding over the edges and basting the fabric at the corners. I find it easiest to baste at the corner fold nearest to the center, not the edge, it gives me the best corners. (Baste the fabric in EACH CORNER) When you get to the last 2 corners, remove the clip and continue to baste: (Removing the clip) (Clip is gone) (Continue to fold last 2 corners) (Baste last corner) (Cut the thread) (Tie a knot to secure the basting) (A finished hexagon!) (This one turned out better than the green one, so I wanted to show you that it gets better with practice) (A bunch of finished hexagons) 10) After your hexagon is basted, take it to the ironing board and start pressing the heck out of those seams. I wouldn't recommend using steam because it might distort your paper hexagon (if you intend on using it again). I literally just set the iron on the hex for a while and prayed that it didn't burn. (Firmly pressed hexagons) 11) After you've got a bunch of little hexagons pressed beyond belief, it is time to decide how you will design whatever you are making. Below are common hexagon pattern arrangements: (flower arrangement consists of 1 center hexagon with six hexes surrounding the center) (Diamond arrangement with hexagons consists of 1 center hexagon with 8 hexagons surrounding it and built up further from there) (A completely random but wicked fun arrangement) 12) Now that you've picked out your arrangement (I will be doing the hexagon flower), play around with your fabric layout: (This is the arrangement I chose to go with) 13) Once your layout is determined, you can start sewing them together (Sew with RIGHT SIDES facing one another). There are two stitches that can be used. You can use the whip stitch or the ladder stitch. See page 3 of Amy's hexagon tutorial detailed illustrations of the 2 stitches. She does a very good job of showing you how to make the stitches, so I am not going to reiterate, I just want to show you the end result of each stitch. See my pictures below of the two stitches. I don't love either stitch really, here is my take on them: Whip Stitch: A very quick stitch. I find that with the whip stitch is too loose and the thread shows on the front of the hexagon. However, this allows the hexagon to lay perfectly flat after being stitch together with other hexagons. So it bothers me that the thread shows. (If you look closely at the seems, you can see that the thread shows and that really bothers me) Ladder Stitch: This stitch takes a little longer. I also find that the ladder stitch is a tighter stitch but leaves a weird effect on the front of the hexagon that doesn't allow it to lay perfectly flat. It bothers me that it doesn't lay as flat at the whip stitch. (A close up) (Notice that there are no little threads showing, I like that, but you can see that there almost look like indents because of the stitching) (No little threads showing) 14) Now that the hexagon is all stitched up, take it over the to ironing board and press the life out of it: (Hexagon flower all pressed) 15) I haven't made hexagon arrangements larger than one of the flowers, but after you are done with your entire arrangement, that is when you take out the papers. To be honest, I am not sure what the rule is on taking out the basting threads. They are invisible from the front, so I guess if you wanted to leave them in for more stability, I can't see that being a problem. Whichever you choose to do, make sure to take out the PAPER FIRST so your basting threads help to not distort the hex. I am going to leave my basting threads on this time. I guess my method is pushing the paper out from the front of the flower. (No more papers!) 16) I would definitely go give the hex another press after you remove all of the papers. 17) Then, I would trim up all those loose ends. I think it's safe to say that you can trim them pretty close to the knot you made (No more loose ends!) 18) Then I would press them again, it can't hurt, right? AND DONE! (YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!) OK! All that work for some hexagons? Yup. Let me know if you have any questions at all or if I can add anything to the semi-tutorial to make it any more helpful if you are using it as a guide. I finally finished the crochet blanket I started back in March. I fell in love with the gingham print over the Winter and was inspired to create this yellow Gingham check baby blanket. I could have gotten this blanket finished in about three weeks if I would have put more effort into it. Spring came. The warmer it got, the less interest I had in making it. This was an easy crochet as it only consist of a single stitch and double stitch throughout, rotating the colors every ten stitches. I worked on it a little each week and sometimes I would let two or three weeks go by before I would pick it up again. I get bored and often loose my patience with long projects. This blanket was crocheted using the griddle stitch. It turned out to be 38 x 38 inches. I really started making this blanket for myself just to see if I could do it. It came out smaller than I expected so I added it to my Etsy shop. I do not know what I was thinking. My daughter called it a popcorn blanket as is had all the colors of hot buttery popcorn. I thought it looked like a sunny day. I'm pleased with how well it turned out. It is soft and warm and would be perfect for a baby. This past Saturday I taught a workshop on the One Block Wonder Technique at the Eastern branch of the Irish Patchwork Society. It was a busy but satisfying day and I think the participants enjoyed it. I don't have a lot of photos from the day, but I thought I'd share those which have resulting blocks in them (pity I don't have everybody's), as well as the tips we were able to take away from the day. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished quilts, though finalizing the layouts may take quite some time. This is a picture I wanted to print out, but didn't manage to get to the printers'. It sums up what we did on the day very well (both the picture and the phrase were found on the Web). I will not run through the whole process of making a One Block Wonder quilt (there are a lot of tutorials around on the Web), but I do want to share some tips which proved handy and/or were learned the hard way. 1. When choosing the fabric, pay attention to its color way - the pattern will change beyond all recognition, but the colors will stay the same. 2. For the first stage of the process - identifying your pattern repeat - it's handy to use a tailor's yardstick or any piece of board/plank that has a long straight edge. Alternatively, you can tape together two quilting rulers. 3. Some fabrics have their prints printed straighter than others. Don't be afraid to shift and wiggle your fabric to align the pattern. Once it's aligned, handle it with care to keep it that way. 4. Use flat pins to keep together your six layers while you're cutting. They don't have to be removed from the fabric when they get under the ruler, so your strips will remain aligned and won't shift. 5. Although most tutorials call for cutting 3 3/4 in strips, you don't really have to stick to this number. Measure the width of your repeat - in some fabrics it will not divide by 3 3/4, so to avoid wasting too much of your fabric you can choose a different strip width, say 3 1/2 in of maybe 4 in. Another thing to consider is the scale of your pattern. If it's on the smallish side, decrease the width of your strips. 6. Using a 60 degree triangle ruler with a "blunted" corner saves you a bit of fabric width when cutting the triangles. The blunted corner can also be handy to mark your central corner when piecing the triangles together. However, you don't really need a special ruler for this technique, any ruler with a a 60 degree line on it will do the job too. 7. Make sure your ruler has a horizontal line matching the edge of your strip. If it doesn't, create a line by sticking a piece of tape to the ruler - this will ensure all of the angles in your triangles are 60 degrees, and thus, all of the sides in your triangles are equal. 8. When piecing your triangles keep them in strict order, and always keep the center corners facing one way (for example, away from you) or mark the center corners with a pin, then your piecing process will be fast and smooth. 9. After you've assembled and pressed your half-hexies, keep them together with a piece of masking tape on the back while you're playing with the layout. 10. The layout is a very personal process, but I would still point out two important things - lay out all your blocks to see if there is any "focal" color that really jumps out at you; if there is, start the composition with the blocks that have most of this focal color and create some sort of shape of line with them, then arrange the other blocks around. This is a quilt I made before with the same lilac fabric. I chose to arrange the purple/pink blocks in a sort of wave with the greens supporting the shape. 11. When playing with the layout, snap photos of every variant, even if you don't really like it - the pictures make it easier to evaluate, compare and discuss your layout with other people, you might spot something you can't see up close and personal. On the whole this is a very fast and satisfying technique, definitely worth trying, at least to gain a new perspective on the use of pattern in fabric and the potential of fabrics you probably never considered suitable for quilting. From time to time I get emails from nice readers who are looking for advice about where and what to buy for their first sewing machine purchase. And being the really helpful person that I am, I write back and tell them that I have no idea. I always feel like a total schlub. While I thoroughly enjoy sewing, my sewing machine experience has been really limited. In fact, I have been blissfully sewing away on my Bernina Sport 801 for most of my sewing life. It’s probably about as old as I am. This machine is fantastic – I love it. It’s not the easiest machine to lug around – it’s pretty heavy, but I like that it feels sturdy. I don’t do a lot of fancy stuff – mainly all I sew are straight lines with a 1/4″ seam allowance. I also don’t do very much quilting with my machine other than mini quilts and some baby quilts. If I were doing a lot of machine quilting, I would probably get frustrated because it has such a narrow throat. But for what I do use my machine for, it’s awesome. I had the strangest request from a customer the other day. She is a photographer and asked if I could make her a set of crochet nunchucks for a photo shoot. A little surprised, I told her I'd take a stab at it (no pun intended). I didn't even need to find a pattern to make me a set of these. After I looked at a few online, I figured it out. They were pretty simple to make. The hardest part was making them exactly the same on each side. I'd loose count and have to start over. That happens when I watch Law and order and try to crochet at the same time. I do not plan to make anymore of these but I will share my pattern with you. Crochet Nunchucks. This is will be crocheted in rounds (no joining). you may need a stitch marker. I used a hook size I (5.0mm) Make two. 1st Color Round 1: Start with a magic circle (or chain 3 and join in 1st chain to create a circle). 6sc in the circle. (6). Round 2: 2sc in each sc (12). Round 3: *2sc in next, 1sc in next* repeat around (18) Round 4: Back loops only, sc around (18) (this makes your bottom edge of handles) Round 5: sc around (18) Round 6: sc around (18) Round 7: sc around (18) 2nd Color Round 8-27 sc around (18) 1st Color Round 28: sc around (18) Round 29: sc around (18) Round 30: sc around (18) Time to add the stuffing!!! Round 31: back loops only, *2sc together, 1sc* around. Round 32: *2sc together* around. Fasten off leaving enough yarn tail to stitch the center hole together. Chain I did four I-cords about 5 inches long, sewed and linked them together, then sewed them to the handles. Here is a link on how to crochet an I-cord. I'm not good at writing out patterns, but I hope you get the idea. Basically I did 5 rounds of end colors and 20 rounds of center color. I think they turned out really cute and I may crochet another pair one day just for the fun of it but currently I have other projects I need to be working on. I've been plugging away at my RSC18 projects. I guess I'm a slow learner, since I'm just now realizing I have ALOT of projects started, and I'm not too good at getting them finished.... the soothing and mindless sewing is a good thing, but then at some point I need to buckle down and get some of those blocks sewn together! this week I did 12 of my kona indigo 9 patches. 11 colors, 12 blocks. I think I might have done papaya twice.... canary, curry, yarrow, school bus 🚌, buttercup, daffodil, banana 🍌, papaya, butter, maize, corn yellow between watching the 3 littles 3X a week (our family babysits 3 little girls- ages 5,3 and 1) and grandchildren who visit very regularly, I was realizing that we didn't really have enough small quilts for naps, snuggling, floor time, ect... "didn't really have enough small quilts" can you even believe I just typed that?! I have a HUGE stack of the crumb blocks- a RSC project from 2016 and 2017. ( I did crumb blocks other years, too, but used them all. or most.)  the above 2 rainbow quilts were based on patterns/photos I found here and here. I've had them pinned for awhile; glad to finally get something up on my design wall! I chose a 7X7 layout for these quilts so I could choose a backing without having to piece it. they're nice and small for the littles to use, and not too heavy or bulky. (the crumb blocks will finish at 6") the purple and yellow quilt above is for my granddaughter to use. she and her family live across the country, but it will be here for her whenever she comes. I did rearrange the color columns, and they look much tidier now. although the pictures show the quilts just laid out on the wall, as of this typing, they are all sewn together, pressed and have backings picked out. 2 are even quilted! I'm anxious to get them done and washed so we can start using them! plus, with the changing weather (although we DID have snow 3 TIMES this week!!!) it's time for me to be making some spring dresses for my little (or really, medium sized) girls! they've also requested some nightgowns. believe it or not, the above photo is AFTER I used nearly 200 crumb blocks for the 4 quilts! and the black/brown/grey/cream crumb blocks aren't even pictured! A recent visit to the Threads website had contributing editor and sewist extraordinaire, Kenneth King, offering a tutorial on how to hem a curved, lamé hem. First, lamé is the fabric from hell. But to sew a tiny hem on a curved piece of lamé is work only intended for the deepest depths of Hades. I was really intrigued with his technique and anxious to give it a try. The Sand Dollar top gave me the perfect opportunity. I tweaked the process a teeny bit but have to say it is brilliant. I needed a tiny hem on the front skirt of this smocked top, per the directions from AS&E. I have a tute on the right for baby hems that has worked for me quite well, particularly with sheers but this method is so fast and easy. Here's how I did it on the Sand Dollar top: The first thing you do is find the right stabilizer. He suggested adding machine tape or Solvy for sheers. What I used is a roll of paper stabilizer I bought at least 20 years ago that is thinner than adding machine tape and I felt it worked perfectly. I would love to be able to tell you exactly what it is but I haven't a clue. I just know that it is like manna from heaven in that I never run out. I have used miles of this stuff. Anyhoo, get your strips of stabilizer and line them up and pin them with a perfectly sharp edge on the garment fabric right side. This is a tweak. He sewed his first and then cut back the stabilizer. My hem was a straight line so I cut the garment edge fresh with the rotary cutter and then lined up the edge of the stabilizer and pinned. Now to the machine. I adjusted the stitch length to 2.0. The smaller the stitch the easier to rip out the stabilizer. Then I put on my trusty edge stitching foot and clicked it 6 clicks to the left (Pfaff). I did a trial run on some stabilizer and you can see above the measurement is right at 1/8 inch. Gotta remember that. Six clicks is exactly one eighth!I stitched the hem SLOWLY making sure the blade butted right up to the edge. Next it was to the ironing board. I found it easier to make the next step happen if I first pressed the tiny seam toward the garment away from the paper. (Tweak) Now you roll the hem over so the tiny hem is tucked behind the rolled edge. Press flat like you see above. Back to the machine! Place the blade of your edge stitching foot in the ditch between the paper and the rolled hem. Click your needle two clicks to right of center if you have a Pfaff. This will give you the specified 1/16th inch edge stitch. Now stitch the hem in this ditch, S L O W L Y. This is not rush time. Back to the ironing board! Just press it all nice and flat on both sides. Lookin' good, heh? Now pull your paper stabilizer and watch it magically come off with no effort or fibers left behind, easy easy peasy. Here is your hem on the wrong side. And here is your hem from the right side. Not too shabby, huh? I think it is slightly perfect if I may say so myself! But here's the best part: Truth be told I put the hem in and forgot that I hadn't measured the skirt length yet. So this perfect little hem went in 3 1/2 inches beyond where it was needed. I cut my hem again and redid the whole process but for the heck of it I timed myself from start to finish. 11 minutes!!!! That's all it took to get this great little hem beautifully done on sixty inches, yup, of fabric. THIS IS FAST. I love it. We are so lucky to have him feeding our passion.....Bunny ETA: I am back to say that I recently , for a friend, altered a bias chiffon gown, two layers. It was all cut on the bias front and back and was lovely on her, so jealous. Both the lining and top, went from floor length to knee length. I used this method but first took what was cut off and made samples with the Ditch and Stitch paper method and then with the Solvy as the chiffon was quite sheer. The paper method was the clear, no pun intended, winner. The solvy was futzy to work with and difficult, IMO. The ditch and stitch went together quickly, even on the bias and curves. It was critical to sew slowly and to rotary cut sharply. I did extend my #6 to #7 after sampling to prevent unraveling. Biggest lesson learned on working on critical garments like a gown, make those samples first. Was the hem stiff from paper? Not in the slightest. I actually ended up starching the edge of the hem to improve the finish. Was the paper showing through? Not at all and this was quite sheer. So I say, other than maybe with a black chiffon, move forward with the Ditch and Stitch paper to do this hem on sheer fabrics with confidence.
