Silkandmore now makes specialized clothing for seniors. I did a survey of some of my elderly and disabled customers. Some had issues with arms, some in wheelchairs, some with Rhuematoid arthritis. The overall sense I got was that what was needed was a garment that makes you comfortable, has easy functionality, and all in all makes you FEEL good. So I designed some clothing that would fit the needs of the elderly. This housecoat combines the ease and coverage of a robe with the style of a caftan. Besides being beautiful and incredibly comfortable this unique garment offers many benefits to our elderly and disabled customers. Ease of Use - It is so easy to get in and out of. The housecoat has buttons in the front so that it can be stepped in and pulled up or a it can be pulled down over the head for easy and self dressing. It also features roomy sleeves which are ideal as they make it easy to put on and off. Construction-The cotton used to make this is very soft, the attention paid to the inside (seams, hems etc.) is identical to the outside. You can wear this around the home, have a guest over or go to the mailbox. While these "feel" as comfortable as a regular robe you will "look" as if you got "dressed" up for the day. These are also ideal for the hospital stay. Lining- While the cotton used in this is very soft, it's weight and draping provides adequate coverage. Some women may choose to have lining added for extra coverage due to previous surgeries such as mastectomies , -ostomy appliances, etc. This feature is available at an additional charge of $10 for women who want extra coverage www.etsy.com/listing/214886222/add-lining-to-robes Pockets-Women who are disabled and need assistive devices such as a cane or have a weakness or disability of the hands/arms need will appreciate the pockets on the housecoat to carry items. Sizing- The housecoat is made for you based not just on "dress size." when ordering, an additional measurement for height is used for a true fit. This allows for the correct size AND length of your housecoat. For disabled women in wheelchairs or who ride scooter there is sufficient coverage in the skirt area to cover the lap. Fabric Pattern - I made this particular housecoat from a beautiful White Happy Flowers Pattern in 100% mulmul cotton. I also have the same fabric available in many other colors so during checkout just choose the color you want this housecoat in. For color reference you can check our robes picture in Happy Flowers Pattern. Size Guide - Below is the size guide, .................US........................UK/AU........... Here's a fun activity for young kids. All you need is a ball of string some nails and hammer and a peice of wood. It makes a great decoration for the home or kids bedroom and a great alternative to a hung canvas. You can choose any shape you desire plus there are lots of fascinating patterns you can create which may suit an adult or an older child. Here are some free patterns http://www.stringartfun.com. For a younger child such as mine, it is best to keep things simple. My little sweety chose to do a heart shape. I simply drew the shape and hammered the nails in around an inch apart, tied the string in place and then let her go crazy weaving the string in and out of the nails and 'go crazy' is exactly what she did. She was so excited to create an intricate web out of string and nails and on a large scale it was quite a physically engaging activity. We used a multi coloured wool but any colour or fibre would be fine too. I love the texture and pattern and have placed it in our living area for everyone to appreciate. The wool paired with the grainy wood brings a warmth to our home. It reminds me of the kind of art I grew up with from the 70s and 80s. I'm so glad this trend is back. Have a go. Get retro.

This month I made a batch of adult size bibs for the Dinner for 2 February project over at Hopeful Threads. She is collecting both adult and child size bibs. I started out making adult bibs first. I decided to draft my own pattern for this project and thought I would show you I did it. Supplies: 18"x36" paper for the pattern 1 yard of main fabric 1 yard of fabric for the backing ( I used flannel) 3/4" Velcro First I used a large plate (10") to round out the corners of my 18"x36" paper. Next I used a small plate to make the neck hole. I used an 8" plate but I think a 6"-7" plate might be better. Measure 3" from the top center, trace and cut your circle. To make the neck hole fit better measure 2"-3" in from the center and round the edges. I used a lid from a jar. This is what the neckline should look like. And this is what the pattern looks like. Next you want to cut one focus fabric and one backing fabric. I used 100% cotton for the focus fabric and flannel for the backing. Pin right sides togther and sew around the edges using a 3/8" seam allowance. Leave a 3"-4" opening at the bottom for turning. Clip curves. Turn right side out. Fold the bottom opening under and press. Topstich aroud 1/4" around the edges. The final step is to add Velco. Cut a piece of Velcro 4" long. Place about 1" from the edge and sew down as shown. I usually put the hook on the bottom and the loop (the soft side) on the top. You may need to adjust the Velcro before sewing it down to make sure the neckline lies flat. And there you have it! A finished adult sized bib. Check out Hopeful Threads February Flickr Group to see all the wonderful bibs that were sewn. Stop by Hopeful Threads monthly to see what awesome project she has in store.
