This morning I finished my first project inspired by the beauty of the Von Karman vortices in nature. Who would have thought fluid dynamics could be so pretty! With the blues it made me think of river eddies so I present to you the Karman River Whirls Scarf. Nalbound in Finnish 2+2 for a stable chain of Cascade Eco+ in Lake Chelan Heather colorway. I hope to write up the pattern for this. I've not seen ANYTHING like it done in nalbinding yet and I'm just giddy about the possibility of having 'invented' something! Background info for those who aren't familiar with Von Karman Vortices: They're swirls in a fluid when the fluid has to move around an object. When I worked at a satellite receiving station as a programmer for the Landsat 7 project, there were many images I saw that just blew me away. This was one of them - Von Karman vortices from the Juan Fernandez Islands sticking up into the clouds. I remember when this image made the front cover of ASPRS magazine in 1999. Green Camel Report Last weekend my daughter, one of my dear friends - Johanna, and I drove to the delightful little town of Tyler, MN and attended the Green Camel Gathering crafting weekend at the old Danebod Folk School. It was wonderful to catch up with so many of my fiber arts friends from around the area. Though, feel free to laugh - just three of us filled my SUV to capacity with the crafts we brought to work on. I hosted a group indigo dye experiment on Saturday. (I can't call it a class, it was just us having fun tossing stuff into the dye vat.) Sunday morning, I was able to take the "Reverse Knitting" class by my friend Miranda. Knitting left handed was doable. Perling - well I'm not sure I have my mind wrapped around that yet. Much chatting, spinning, and nalbinding were done. My daughter was able to try several new crafts including needle felting and kumihimo. Now, I think I have my daughter and Johanna hooked, and should be able to expect more Green Camel trips with them in the future. Yipee! What's your inspiration lately?

The last few months (since September) I've done quite a bit of nalbinding and finishing old projects. Finnish Stitch 3+3 pouch from Imperial Tracie Too sport weight yarn. (My Ravelry project page for the pouch has general instructions for making your own.) Finnish Stitch 3+3 mittens from handspun yarn - mixed batts from Moonrover and SD Natural Colored Wool Rådmansö Stitch hat from Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky yarn Hand Warmers from Finnish Stitch 3+3 Stitch done with Imperial Yarns Tracie Too sport weight. Currently I'm working on a circular vest, inspired by the crochet pattern for the Pinwheel Sweater. Simply doing Oslo stitch to have more drape than the thicker stitches that use more loops. General crochet conversion instructions and tips for this vest are in my Ravelry project page. Has it really been that long since I posted last? Eghads! Well, to make up for that, I've updated the site quite a bit - new look, added a calendar of classes that I'm teaching, and a list of classes I have ready to go (I've had several inquiries lately and I thought this might help). (Update 12/28 - added in links to the project pages for the pouch and vest, since I'd has questions on them. The project pages have general directions for these projects, if you'd like to try to make them too.) What projects are you working on lately?
Mikä on framilon? Harjoitukset jatkuvat. //T
data:blog.metaDescription
Työn alla on tällä hetkellä talvinen mekko, joka on edestä kokonaan auki ja johon tulee siis nappeja ja napinläpiä helmasta kaulukseen, 50 kaiken kaikkiaan. Niitä olenkin viime päivät väsännyt joutohetkinä yhden silloin toisen tällöin. Tätä kirjoittaessani kasassa on 16 nappia ja 26 valmista napinläpeä. Juolahtipa kuitenkin mieleeni tehdä pieni kuvasarja kangasnapin valmistuksesta. I am sewing at the moment winter dress which opens from hem to neck and it needs a lot of buttons and buttonholes. 50 of them both. lately I have made them one by one now and then. At the moment 16 buttons and 26 buttonholes are ready. Well, it came to my mind to show how I am making the buttons out of woollen material. I have made earlier buttons from thinner materials, like cotton or silk. They need some stuffing and the technique is a bit different, because these buttons kinda stuff themselves. The technique here I have learned from Katrins´ blog. She is having also a video of it, so you can check there, if my text and photos (taken in a November light) are not clear enough. Kuvissa käytän kankaasta erottuvaa pellavalankaa, varsinaiset napit mekkoa varten on ommeltu liki kankaan värisellä silkkilangalla. Valmiit napit ovat noin sentin halkaisijaltaan. I have used blue wool from Naturtuche. It weights 350 g per running meter. The squares are about 3 x 3 centimeter, they could be a little bit larger too. If you use thicker fabric, they should be larger. For photographic purposes I have used here linen thread, but in the actual buttons for the dress I am using blue silken thread. The ready button size is about one centimeter across. Ensin kiinnitän langan yhteen kulmaan ja taitan kaikki kulmat sisäänpäin. I fold the corners inside and sew through them... Ompelen langan kulmien läpi kuten kuvassa ja kiristän lankaa. ...pulling the thread a little. Taitan syntyneet kulmat uudelleen sisäänpäin ja ompelen samoin. Then I fold the new corners and sew... ...and again the third time. Now the button is already quite round, but I can secure it and sew in a few corners left with a few stitches and make it rounder. I use long thread which with I can then sew the button to the dress. Then I make another 49 buttons.
Just a great design for this denim whale. Tutorial here (Finnish but can be found in English on the website).
