Yoon Ji Seon's embroidered portraits blend fiber and photography. Much of work consists of self-portraits, with varying degrees of emotions, abstraction, and detail. Her "Rag Face" series goes back to 2006, when she started experimenting with these mixed-media pieces.

Many people see art as something with many barriers to entry – maybe the materials are expensive, maybe you don't have the space, or maybe you think it's difficult, requiring many specialized tools. Sometimes that's true, but the artists here have created incredible works using almost nothing but paper and scissors or knives.
inspired by Greek Mythology, Kyiv-based Marta Syrko made some creative use of water and its fluid visual effects for a dreamy portrait series.
Recently came across this really interesting work of the photographer Bobby Neel Adams. Called 'AgeMaps' "Two photographs of the same person, from different periods in time

Romina Bassu was born in Rome in 1982. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome and at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Seville.

Derek has gained national attention for his collage portrait series, recycling magazines, labels, and found materials to create the works on canvas. The series showcases Gores' contrasting interests in the natural beauty of the figure, the angular design aesthetics of fashion (and machinery), and a fearless sense of play.
Canadian artist Mathieu Laca crafts oil paintings that use texture and abstractions that toy with the conventions of portraiture. Whether it’s famous subjects or the vague everyman or everywoman, the artist packs both meticulous, odd flair and personality into each of the paintings. He's given this treatment to anyone from Henry David Thoreau and Albert Einstein to historical arts figures like Vincent Van Gogh.

Discarded photographs from yesteryear are given new life in the photographic project ‘Single Image Processing’ by Japanese artist, Kensuke Koike. In the stacks of weathered old photographs, worn albums and bundles of vintage postcards so often found at flea markets, Koike finds inspiration for a different kind of photographic practice. Perhaps if you follow this blog, or have come here via Pinterest like some 680,000 of you (seriously, there were 15,000+ visits last month?!), you have noticed that I have not posted in over a year and wondered what's up?? I mentioned in an earlier post that maintaining our school blogs became less encouraged at one point, so I sort of slowed down and was mostly posting within our school's class pages for parents to see. Then, during the last school year, my family made the decision to move to a new state, and I suppose I just started to focus on wrapping up nine glorious years at Calvert School and I stopped blogging altogether. Last June, I moved south and this year I have been staying home part time with my son and actually making some art of my own (I paint pet portraits! See below :)). I miss teaching so very much, and I still visit this blog every month or two to approve/publish comments and reply to them. I am happy and humbled that so many people are inspired by my lessons and my students' work, and it is so cool to still feel connected in some way to the Art Education world through comments and questions from other teachers! I hope to one day find a new school home and continue to do what I know I do best- teach ART! - and then you might see me pick up here again too!
