SEL Standards Names activities or tasks one does well, Names activities or tasks one may need help to improve. CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) has established five competencies for social-emotional learning. Some school districts and states have taken this work and developed standards to be used at each grade level or a multi-grade level band. The gold standards of this work have been developed by the Illinois State Board of Education, Austin Independent School District (AISD), and Anchorage School District. The AISD and the Anchorage School District use almost identical standards, goals, and benchmarks. I have merged these two sets of standards into one given their similarity. These districts also created five grade bands (early elementary, upper elementary, middle school, early high school, and late high school). Elementary through Middle School is included here. The Illinois State Board of Education created 3 goals drawn from CASEL’s five competencies and then created 10 standards for those three goals. Each grade has two to three levels of skills/performance descriptors that should be expected to be accomplished under each standard.

Honesty is a character trait that is so often forgotten in today’s pop culture. Our children are immersed in a life of social media, television, and other outlets that do not teach our students the value of honesty. As a first grade teacher, it is SO IMPORTANT to me that we train up our littles to be honest students from an early age. Hopefully, they will take the skills they learn and carry them through their school days. To introduce honesty, I love to complete this Honesty Lapbook with my students.
Through our extensive support work we have developed a number of strategies that support schools develop wellbeing.
Honesty is one of the most important character traits that children should learn and be able to grasp at an early age. Although any time is a good time to teach honesty, Presidents' Day is a perfect opportunity since Abe Lincoln is best known for being an honest man.

This week's social curriculum objective is Resisting Negative Peer Pressure. It's not something I taught last year, but when I saw it in my resource book (More Tools for Teaching Social Skills in School), I thought it was really important to include because so many kids don't necessarily understand what peer pressure is completely or can always recognize it. I started the lesson out by sharing a video I found on YouTube. It is a narrative explaining to students the different types of peer pressure that they might find themselves experiencing. The link to the video is here. Afterwards, I asked students: What did you notice about what peer pressure can look like? What surprised you? What did you not know before? Next, I shared with them this anchor chart and explained that YES! Peer pressure can come in many forms! There is Spoken and Unspoken. After the overview of this anchor chart, students shared their own experiences with peer pressure that, at the time, they did not recognize as someone pressuring them to do something they did not want to do or someone having power over them. For example, one student in my class realized that he was being peer pressured to play only the games that his friend wants to play. He told us that he never gets to choose the game or if he does say what he wants to play, his friend doesn't agree to play that game. As a class, we helped this student come up with ideas as to what to do and say to his friend. We also talked about how confidence is key, whether you are "popular" or not, people will see your confidence and want to follow your example. I used an example from Wonder, by RJ Palacio. The character Summer is very confident and people wanted to be her friend because she was always confident in her choices of choosing kind. Put Down: Insulting or calling someone names to make him or her feel bad Reasoning: Giving reasons to do something or saying why it is OK to do Rejection: Telling someone you will not be their friend if they don't do what you want them to do The Huddle: A group stands together talking or laughing and leaving someone out The Example: The "popular" kid does something, wears something, or purchases something to set the example and everyone else follows The Look: Giving a look to someone that tells them they are "so not cool" right now After our discussion, I read The Juice Box Bully, by Bob Sornson and Maria Dismondy. While reading the book, I stopped and checked to see if students were recognizing the type of peer pressure the characters were demonstrating throughout the story. Earlier this month, we also read Each Kindness, by Jacqueline Woodson and My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig. It was great to hear the connections students were making with these books as well during our discussion. Throughout the week and throughout the school year, I will keep coming back to the social skills I teach in Unit 1. I think it is extremely important to give children the "tools to survive" so that they can be successful in the classroom and outside of it. Do you teach about Negative Peer Pressure? Background: Fanny Crosby, the namesake for American Heritage Girls Pathfinder Level, was born almost 200 years ago on March 24, 1820. Due to doctor's error, she became blind when she was still just a baby; only 6 weeks old. But Fanny persevered. What does it mean to persevere? She never gave up. She kept going, kept trying, and stayed on task even when things were hard and she felt like giving up. She believed that she could do "all things though Christ who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13). She was content despite her circumstances and praised God for her blessings. Fanny loved to write hymns, and she was very good at it. Throughout her life she wrote more than 8,000 hymns; some of which we still sing in church today. Game: Freeze Dance Before continuing with the lesson, play freeze dance to get all of those wiggles out. Use some of Fanny's popular hymns like "Blessed Assurance", "To God be the Glory", and/or "All the Way my Savior Leads Me". Discussion: If you were blind, what challenges would you face? How could you overcome them? What are you other senses and how could you use them if you could not use your sense of sight? Would it be easy? Reading is one challenge the blind need to overcome. Between the years of 1821 and 1837, Louis Braille, a blind French youth developed a system of raised bumps that represented letters and symbols so reading could be accomplished with the sense of touch. However, it was not until 1868 when a group of British men now known as The Royal National Institute for the Blind took up the cause of bringing braille to the world. Activity: Print out a handout of the Braille Alphabet. Decode this worksheet: (Answer: Did you persevere? Never give up!) I love the teamwork the girls used to solve this! Discuss: Do you think it would take a lot of hard work and perseverance to learn Braille? What would be the reward for persevering? Have each student tell of a time they had to persevere. Activity: Prepare name strips with a Braille template representing the child's name. Have them glue gemstones to form their names in Braille. With eyes closed have them run their fingers over the name tape. Discuss how it feel. Have them pass around and try feeling each other's names. If you put three names in front of them, with eyes closed, can they feel out their name? Game: Play "Fanny Crosby", similar to "Marco Polo" but on land. One child is chosen as "it" and blindfolded. For the safety of everyone, do not allow running and make sure the space is clear of hazards. Whoever is "it" yells "Fanny" and the rest of the children respond "Crosby". By listening, the "it" person will try to move towards the other children, with the goal of tagging them. When tagged, that person then becomes "it".
